Motivated by recent experiments on heavy fermion materials CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ and UBe$_{13}$, we develop a framework to capture generic properties of multiband superconductors with strong Pauli paramagnetic effect (PPE). In contrast to the single band case, the upper critical field $H_{rm c2}$ can remain second order transition even for strong PPE cases. The expected first order transition is hidden inside $H_{rm c2}$ and becomes a crossover due to the interplay of multibandness. The present theory based on full self-consistent solutions of the microscopic Eilenberger theory explains several mysterious anomalies associated with the crossover and the empty vortex core state which is observed by recent STM experiment on CeCu$_2$Si$_2$.

In this paper the low-temperature properties of two isostructural canonical heavy-fermion compounds are contrasted with regards to the interplay between antiferromagnetic (AF) quantum criticality and superconductivity. For CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, fully-gappe d d-wave superconductivity forms in the vicinity of an itinerant three-dimensional heavy-fermion spin-density-wave (SDW) quantum critical point (QCP). Inelastic neutron scattering results highlight that both quantum critical SDW fluctuations as well as Mott-type fluctuations of local magnetic moments contribute to the formation of Cooper pairs in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. In YbRh$_2$Si$_2$, superconductivity appears to be suppressed at $Tgtrsim~10$ mK by AF order ($T_N$ = 70 mK). Ultra-low temperature measurements reveal a hybrid order between nuclear and 4f-electronic spins, which is dominated by the Yb-derived nuclear spins, to develop at $T_A$ slightly above 2 mK. The hybrid order turns out to strongly compete with the primary 4f-electronic order and to push the material towards its QCP. Apparently, this paves the way for heavy-fermion superconductivity to form at $T_c$ = 2 mK. Like the pressure - induced QCP in CeRhIn$_5$, the magnetic field - induced one in YbRh$_2$Si$_2$ is of the local Kondo-destroying variety which corresponds to a Mott-type transition at zero temperature. Therefore, these materials form the link between the large family of about fifty low-$T$ unconventional heavy - fermion superconductors and other families of unconventional superconductors with higher $T_c$s, notably the doped Mott insulators of the cuprates, organic charge-transfer salts and some of the Fe-based superconductors. Our study suggests that heavy-fermion superconductivity near an AF QCP is a robust phenomenon.

The upper critical field Hc2(T) of the multiband superconductor KFe2As2 has been studied via low-temperature thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements. We present compelling evidence for Pauli-limiting effects dominating Hc2(T) for H || a, as revealed by a crossover from second- to first-order phase transitions to the superconducting state in the magnetostriction measurements down to 50 mK. Corresponding features were absent for H || c. To our knowledge, this crossover constitutes the first confirmation of Pauli limiting of the Hc2(T) of a multiband superconductor. The results are supported by modeling Pauli limits for single-band and multiband cases.
We investigate the properties of the coexistence phase of itinerant antiferromagnetism and nodal $d$-wave superconductivity (Q-phase) discovered in heavy fermion CeCoIn5 under applied magnetic field. We solve the minimal model that includes $d$-wave superconductivity and underlying magnetic correlations in real space to elucidate the structure of the $Q$-phase in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. We further focus on the role of magnetic impurities, and show that they nucleate the Q-phase at lower magnetic fields. Our most crucial finding is that, even at zero applied field, dilute magnetic impurities cooperate via RKKY-like exchange interactions to generate a long-range ordered coexistence state identical to the Q-phase. This result is in agreement with recent neutron scattering measurements [S. Raymond et al., J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {bf 83}, 013707 (2014)].
The crystal-field ground state wave function of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated with linear polarized $M$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy from 250mK to 250K, thus covering the superconducting ($T_{text{c}}$=0.6K), the Kondo ($T_{text{K}}$$app rox$20K) as well as the Curie-Weiss regime. The comparison with full-multiplet calculations shows that the temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is well explained with a $Gamma_7^{(1)}$ crystal-field ground-state and the thermal population of excited states at around 30meV. The crystal-field scheme does not change throughout the entire temperature range thus making the scenario of orbital switching unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4$f^0$ configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility for a multi-orbital character of the ground state. We estimate from the Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting energies that several percents of the higher lying $Gamma_6$ state and $Gamma_7^{(2)}$ crystal-field states are mixed into the primarily $Gamma_7^{(1)}$ ground state. This estimate is also supported by re-normalized band-structure calculations that uses the experimentally determined crystal-field scheme.
Nuclear magnetic resonance measurements were performed on CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ in the presence of a magnetic field close to the upper critical field $mu_{0} H_{rm c2}$ in order to investigate its superconducting (SC) properties near pair-breaking field s. In lower fields, the Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $1/T_1T$ abruptly decreased below the SC transition temperature $T_{rm c}(H)$, a phenomenon understood within the framework of conventional spin-singlet superconductivity. In contrast, $1/T_1T$ was enhanced just below $T_{rm c}(H)$ and exhibited a broad maximum when magnetic fields close to $mu_0H_{rm c2}(0)$ were applied parallel or perpendicular to the $c$ axis, although the Knight shift decreased just below $T_{rm c}(H)$. This enhancement of $1/T_1T$, which was recently observed in the organic superconductor $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$, suggests the presence of high-density Andreev bound states in the inhomogeneous SC region, a hallmark of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase.
