For most optoelectronic applications of graphene a thorough understanding of the processes that govern energy relaxation of photoexcited carriers is essential. The ultrafast energy relaxation in graphene occurs through two competing pathways: carrier-carrier scattering -- creating an elevated carrier temperature -- and optical phonon emission. At present, it is not clear what determines the dominating relaxation pathway. Here we reach a unifying picture of the ultrafast energy relaxation by investigating the terahertz photoconductivity, while varying the Fermi energy, photon energy, and fluence over a wide range. We find that sufficiently low fluence ($lesssim$ 4 $mu$J/cm$^2$) in conjunction with sufficiently high Fermi energy ($gtrsim$ 0.1 eV) gives rise to energy relaxation that is dominated by carrier-carrier scattering, which leads to efficient carrier heating. Upon increasing the fluence or decreasing the Fermi energy, the carrier heating efficiency decreases, presumably due to energy relaxation that becomes increasingly dominated by phonon emission. Carrier heating through carrier-carrier scattering accounts for the negative photoconductivity for doped graphene observed at terahertz frequencies. We present a simple model that reproduces the data for a wide range of Fermi levels and excitation energies, and allows us to qualitatively assess how the branching ratio between the two distinct relaxation pathways depends on excitation fluence and Fermi energy.

An equilibrium phase diagram for the shape of compressively strained free-hanging films is developed by total strain energy minimization. For small strain gradients {Delta}{epsilon}, the film wrinkles, while for sufficiently large {Delta}{epsilon}, a phase transition from wrinkling to bending occurs. We consider competing relaxation mechanisms for free-hanging films, which have rolled up into tube structures, and we provide an upper limit for the maximum achievable number of tube rotations.

The diffusion of electron-hole pairs, which are excited in an intrinsic graphene by the ultrashort focused laser pulse in mid-IR or visible spectral region, is described for the cases of peak-like or spread over the passive region distributions of ca rriers. The spatio-temporal transient optical response on a high-frequency probe beam appears to be strongly dependent on the regime of diffusion and can be used for verification of the elasic relaxation mechanism. Sign flip of the differential transmission coefficient takes place due to interplay of the carrier-induced contribution and weak dynamic conductivity of undoped graphene.

In nearly compensated graphene, disorder-assisted electron-phonon scattering or supercollisions are responsible for both quasiparticle recombination and energy relaxation. Within the hydrodynamic approach, these processes contribute weak decay terms to the continuity equations at local equilibrium, i.e., at the level of ideal hydrodynamics. Here we report the derivation of the decay term due to weak violation of energy conservation. Such terms have to be considered on equal footing with the well-known recombination terms due to nonconservation of the number of particles in each band. At high enough temperatures in the hydrodynamic regime supercollisions dominate both types of the interaction). We also discuss the contribution of supercollisions to the heat transfer equation (generalizing the continuity equation for the energy density in viscous hydrodynamics).
Electronic states in 2D materials can exhibit pseudospin degrees of freedom, which allow for unique carrier-field interaction scenarios. Here, we investigate ultrafast sublattice pseudospin relaxation in graphene by means of polarization-resolved pho toluminescence spectroscopy. Comparison with microscopic Boltzmann simulations allows to determine a lifetime of the optically aligned pseudospin distribution of $12pm 2,text{fs}$. This experimental approach extends the toolbox of graphene pseudospintronics, providing novel means to investigate pseudospin dynamics in active devices or under external fields.
Because of its large density-of-states and the 2{pi} Berry phase near its low-energy band-contact points, neutral bilayer graphene (BLG) at zero magnetic field (B) is susceptible to chiral-symmetry breaking, leading to a variety of gapped spontaneous quantum Hall states distinguished by valley and spin-dependent quantized Hall conductivities. Among these, the layer antiferromagnetic state, which has quantum valley Hall (QVH) effects of opposite sign for opposite spins, appears to be the thermodynamic ground state. Though other gapped states have not been observed experimentally at B=0, they can be explored by exploiting their adiabatic connection to quantum Hall states with the same total Hall conductivity {sigma}H. In this paper, by using a magnetic field to select filling factor { u}=2 states with {sigma}H=2e^2/h, we demonstrate the presence of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state for the majority spin, and a Kekule state with spontaneous valley coherence and a quantum valley Hall state for the minority spin in BLG. By providing the first spectroscopic mapping of spontaneous Hall states at { u}=2, our results shed further light on the rich set of competing ordered states in BLG.
