We have studied the propagation characteristics of spin wave modes in a permalloy stripe by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect techniques. We observe a beating interference pattern in the time domain under the influence of an electrical square pulse excitation at the center of the stripe. We also probe the non-reciprocal behavior of propagating spin waves with a dependence on the external magnetic field. Spatial dependence studies show that localized edge mode spin waves have a lower frequency than spin waves in the center of the stripe, due to the varying magnetization vector across the width of the stripe.

Black phosphorus (BP) has emerged as a direct-bandgap semiconducting material with great application potentials in electronics, photonics, and energy conversion. Experimental characterization of the anisotropic thermal properties of BP, however, is e xtremely challenging due to the lack of reliable and accurate measurement techniques to characterize anisotropic samples that are micrometers in size. Here, we report measurement results of the anisotropic thermal conductivity of bulk BP along three primary crystalline orientations, using the novel time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE) with enhanced measurement sensitivities. Two-dimensional beam-offset TR-MOKE signals from BP flakes yield the thermal conductivity along the zigzag crystalline direction to be 84 ~ 101 W/(m*K), nearly three times as large as that along the armchair direction (26 ~ 36 W/(m*K)). The through-plane thermal conductivity of BP ranges from 4.3 to 5.5 W/(m*K). The first-principles calculation was performed for the first time to predict the phonon transport in BP both along the in-plane zigzag and armchair directions and along the through-plane direction. This work successfully unveiled the fundamental mechanisms of anisotropic thermal transport along the three crystalline directions in bulk BP, as demonstrated by the excellent agreement between our first-principles-based theoretical predictions and experimental characterizations on the anisotropic thermal conductivities of bulk BP.

Surface spin waves in thin Permalloy films are studied by means of propagative spin wave spectroscopy. We observe a systematic difference of up to several tens of MHz when comparing the frequencies of counter-propagating waves. This frequency non-rec iprocity effect is modeled using an analytical dipole-exchange theory that considers the mutual influence of non-reciprocal spin wave modal profiles and differences in magnetic anisotropies at the two film surfaces. At moderate film thickness (20 nm and below), the frequency non-reciprocity scales linearly with the wave vector and quadratically with the thickness, whereas a more complex non-monotonic behavior is observed at larger thickness. Our work suggests that surface wave frequency non-reciprocity can be used as an accurate spectroscopic probe of magnetic asymmetries in thin ferromagnetic films.

We have performed a systematic magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy study of GaMnAs with varying Mn densities as a function of temperature, magnetic field, and photon energy. Unlike previous studies, the magnetization easy axis was perpendicular to the sample surface, allowing us to take remanent polar Kerr spectra in the absence of an external magnetic field. The remanent Kerr angle strongly depended on the photon energy, exhibiting a large positive peak at $sim1.7$ eV. This peak increased in intensity and blue-shifted with Mn doping and further blue-shifted with annealing. Using a 30-band ${bf kcdot p}$ model with antiferromagnetic $s,p$-$d$ exchange interaction, we calculated the dielectric tensor of GaMnAs in the interband transition region, assuming that our samples are in the metallic regime and the impurity band has merged with the valence band. We successfully reproduced the observed spectra without emph{ad hoc} introduction of the optical transitions originated from impurity states in the band gap. These results lead us to conclude that above-bandgap magneto-optical Kerr rotation in ferromagnetic GaMnAs is predominantly determined by interband transitions between the conduction and valence bands.
The magneto-optical properties of simple hexagonal graphite exhibit rich beating oscillations, which are dominated by the field strength and photon energy. The former has a strong effect on the intensity, the energy range of the beating and the numbe r of groups, and the latter modulates the total group numbers of the oscillation structures. The single-particle and collective excitations are simultaneously presented in the magnetoreflectance spectra and can be precisely distinguished. For the loss function and reflectance, the beating pattern of the first group displays stronger intensities and broader energy range than other groups. Simple hexagonal graphite possesses unique magneto-optical characteristics that can serve to identify other bulk graphites.
We investigated the magnetization dynamics of a patterned Co$_{25}$Fe$_{75}$-based heterostructure with a novel optical measurement technique that we call microfocused frequency-resolved magneto optic Kerr effect ($mu$FR-MOKE). We measured the magnet ic field dependence of the dynamical spin-wave susceptibility and recorded a spatial map of the spin-waves excited by a microwave antenna. We compare these results to those obtained on the same sample with the established microfocused Brillouin light scattering technique. With both techniques, we find a spin-wave propagation length of 5.6$mu$m at 10GHz. Furthermore, we measured the dispersion of the wavevector and the spin-wave propagation length as a function of the external magnetic field. These results are in good agreement with existing literature and with the employed Kalinkos-Slavin model.
