We report magnetic susceptibility (chi) and heat capacity Cp measurements along with ab-initio electronic structure calculations on PbCuTe2O6, a compound made up of a three dimensional 3D network of corner-shared triangular units. The presence of antiferromagnetic interactions is inferred from a Curie-Weiss temperature (theta_CW) of about -22 K from the chi(T) data. The magnetic heat capacity (Cm) data show a broad maximum at T^max ~ 1.15 K (i.e. T^max/theta_CW ~ 0.05), which is analogous to the the observed broad maximum in the Cm/T data of a hyper-Kagome system, Na4Ir3O8. In addition, Cm data exhibit a weak kink at T^* ~ 0.87 K. While the T^max is nearly unchanged, the T^* is systematically suppressed in an increasing magnetic field (H) up to 80 kOe. For H > 80 kOe, the Cm data at low temperatures exhibit a characteristic power-law (T^{alpha}) behavior with an exponent {alpha} slightly less than 2. Hopping integrals obtained from the electronic structure calculations show the presence of strongly frustrated 3D spin interactions along with non-negligible unfrustrated couplings. Our results suggest that PbCuTe2O6 is a candidate material for realizing a 3D quantum spin liquid state at high magnetic fields.

The field induced magnetic phase transitions of Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$ were investigated by means of magnetization process and neutron scattering experiments. This system undergoes magnetic phase transition at Ne{e}l temperature $T_mathrm{N}=1.4$ K at zero f ield, and exhibits the magnetization plateau at approximately one third of the saturation magnetization for the field directions $Hparallel b$ and $Hparallel c$. In the present study, additional symptom of the two-third magnetization plateau was found in the field derivative of the magnetization process. The magnetic structure was found to be incommensurate with the ordering vector $boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.575, 0)$ at zero field. With increasing magnetic field parallel to the c-axis, the ordering vector increases continuously and is locked at $boldsymbol{Q}=(0, 0.662, 0)$ in the plateau field range $13.1 mathrm{T} < H < 14.4 mathrm{T}$. This indicates that the collinear textit{up-up-down} spin structure is stabilized by quantum fluctuation at the magnetization plateau.
We successfully synthesize single crystals of the verdazyl radical $alpha$-2,3,5-Cl$_3$-V. $Ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculations indicate that the two dominant antiferromagnetic interactions, $J_{rm{1}}$ and $J_{rm{2}}$ ($alpha =J_{rm{2}}/J_{r m{1}}simeq 0.56$), form an $S$ = 1/2 distorted square lattice. We explain the magnetic properties based on the $S$ = 1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet using the quantum Monte Carlo method, and examine the effects of the lattice distortion and the interplane interaction contribution. In the low-temperature regions below 6.4 K, we observe anisotropic magnetic behavior accompanied by a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state. The electron spin resonance signals exhibit anisotropic behavior in the temperature dependence of the resonance field and the linewidth. We explain the frequency dependence of the resonance fields in the ordered phase using a mean-field approximation with out-of-plane easy-axis anisotropy, which causes a spin-flop phase transition at approximately 0.4 T for the field perpendicular to the plane. Furthermore, the anisotropic dipole field provides supporting information regarding the presence of the easy-axis anisotropy. These results demonstrate that the lattice distortion, anisotropy, and interplane interaction of this model are sufficiently small that they do not affect the intrinsic behavior of the $S$ = 1 / 2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet.

A study by specific heat of a polycrystalline sample of the low-dimensional magnetic system Y$_2$BaCuO$_5$ is presented. Magnetic fields up to 14 T are applied and permit to extract the ($T$,$H$) phase diagram. Below $mu_0H^*simeq2$ T, the Neel tempe rature, associated with a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic long-range ordering, is constant and equals $T_N=15.6$ K. Above $H^*$, $T_N$ increases linearly with $H$ and a field-induced increase of the entropy at $T_N$ is related to the presence of an isosbestic point at $T_Xsimeq20$ K, where all the specific heat curves cross. A comparison is made between Y$_2$BaCuO$_5$ and the quasi-two-dimensional magnetic systems BaNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$, Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, and Pr$_2$CuO$_4$, for which very similar phase diagrams have been reported. An effective field-induced magnetic anisotropy is proposed to explain these phase diagrams.
The compound KTi(SO4)2.H2O was recently reported as a quasi one-dimensional spin 1/2 compound with competing antiferromagnetic nearest neighbor exchange J1 and next-nearest neighbor exchange J2 along the chain with a frustration ratio alpha = J2/J1 ~ 0.29 [Chem. Mater. vol. 20, pg. 8 (2008)]. Here, we report a microscopically based magnetic model for this compound derived from density functional electronic structure calculations along with respective tight-binding models. Our calculations confirm the quasi one-dimensional nature of the system with antiferromagnetic J1 and J2, but suggest a significantly larger frustration ratio alpha ~ 1.1 +- 0.2. Based on transfer matrix renormalization group calculations we found that, due to an intrinsic symmetry of the J1-J2 model, our larger frustration ratio alpha is also consistent with the previous thermodynamic data. To resolve this issue, we propose performing high-field magnetization measurements and low temperature susceptibility measurements which should allow to precisely identify the frustration ratio alpha.

PbCuTe2O6 is a rare example of a spin liquid candidate featuring a three dimensional magnetic lattice. Strong geometric frustration arises from the dominant antiferromagnetic interaction which generates a hyperkagome network of Cu2+ ions although add itional interactions enhance the magnetic lattice connectivity. Through a combination of magnetization measurements and local probe investigation by NMR and muSR down to 20 mK, we provide a robust evidence for the absence of magnetic freezing in the ground state. The local spin susceptibility probed by the NMR shift hardly deviates from the macroscopic one down to 1 K pointing to a homogeneous magnetic system with a low defect concentration. The saturation of the NMR shift and the sublinear power law temperature (T) evolution of the 1/T1 NMR relaxation rate at low T point to a non-singlet ground state favoring a gapless fermionic description of the magnetic excitations. Below 1 K a pronounced slowing down of the spin dynamics is witnessed, which may signal a reconstruction of spinon Fermi surface. Nonetheless, the compound remains in a fluctuating spin liquid state down to the lowest temperature of the present investigation.
