We use the Evolution and assembly of galaxies and their environments (EAGLE) cosmological simulation to investigate the effect of baryons on the density profiles of rich galaxy clusters. We focus on EAGLE clusters with $M_{200}>10^{14}~M_odot$ of which we have six examples. The central brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in the simulation have steep stellar density profiles, $rho_*(r) propto r^{-3}$. Stars dominate the mass density for $r<10~rm{kpc}$, and, as a result, the total mass density profiles are steeper than the Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, in remarkable agreement with observations. The dark matter halo itself closely follows the NFW form at all resolved radii ($rgtrsim3.0~rm{kpc}$). The EAGLE BCGs have similar surface brightness and line-of-sight velocity dispersion profiles as the BCGs in the sample of Newman et al., which have the most detailed measurements currently available. After subtracting the contribution of the stars to the central density, Newman et al. infer significantly shallower slopes than the NFW value, in contradiction with the EAGLE results. We discuss possible reasons for this discrepancy, and conclude that an inconsistency between the kinematical model adopted by Newman et al. for their BCGs, which assumes isotropic stellar orbits, and the kinematical structure of the EAGLE BCGs, in which the orbital stellar anisotropy varies with radius and tends to be radially biased, could explain at least part of the discrepancy.

We determine the inner density profiles of massive galaxy clusters (M$_{200}$ > $5 times 10^{14}$ M$_{odot}$) in the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) hydrodynamic simulations, and investigate whether the dark matter density profiles can be correctly estimated from a combination of mock stellar kinematical and gravitational lensing data. From fitting mock stellar kinematics and lensing data generated from the simulations, we find that the inner density slopes of both the total and the dark matter mass distributions can be inferred reasonably well. We compare the density slopes of C-EAGLE clusters with those derived by Newman et al. for 7 massive galaxy clusters in the local Universe. We find that the asymptotic best-fit inner slopes of generalized NFW (gNFW) profiles, ${gamma}_{rm gNFW}$, of the dark matter haloes of the C-EAGLE clusters are significantly steeper than those inferred by Newman et al. However, the mean mass-weighted dark matter density slopes of the simulated clusters are in good agreement with the Newman et al. estimates. We also find that the estimate of ${gamma}_{rm gNFW}$ is very sensitive to the constraints from weak lensing measurements in the outer parts of the cluster and a bias can lead to an underestimate of ${gamma}_{rm gNFW}$.

Rotation curves of galaxies show a wide range of shapes, which can be paramaterized as scatter in Vrot(1kpc)/Vmax i.e.the ratio of the rotation velocity measured at 1kpc and the maximum measured rotation velocity. We examine whether the observed scat ter can be accounted for by combining scatters in disc scale-lengths, the concentration-halo mass relation, and the M*-Mhalo relation. We use these scatters to create model galaxy populations; when housed within dark matter halos that have universal, NFW density profiles, the model does not match the lowest observed values of Vrot(1kpc)/Vmax and has too little scatter in Vrot(1kpc)/Vmax compared to observations. By contrast, a model using a mass dependent dark matter profile, where the inner slope is determined by the ratio of M*/Mhalo, produces galaxies with low values of Vrot(1kpc)/Vmax and a much larger scatter, both in agreement with observation. We conclude that the large observed scatter in Vrot(1kpc)/Vmax favours density profiles that are significantly affected by baryonic processes. Alternative dark matter core formation models such as SIDM may also account for the observed variation in rotation curve shapes, but these observations may provide important constraints in terms of core sizes, and whether they vary with halo mass and/or merger history.
We present the first simulated galaxy clusters (M_200 > 10^14 Msun) with both self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and baryonic physics. They exhibit a greater diversity in both dark matter and stellar density profiles than their counterparts in simul ations with collisionless dark matter (CDM), which is generated by the complex interplay between dark matter self-interactions and baryonic physics. Despite variations in formation history, we demonstrate that analytical Jeans modelling predicts the SIDM density profiles remarkably well, and the diverse properties of the haloes can be understood in terms of their different final baryon distributions.
We use the EAGLE galaxy formation simulation to study the effects of baryons on the power spectrum of the total matter and dark matter distributions and on the velocity fields of dark matter and galaxies. On scales $k{stackrel{>}{{}_sim}} 4{h,{rm Mpc }^{-1}}$ the effect of baryons on the amplitude of the total matter power spectrum is greater than $1%$. The back-reaction of baryons affects the density field of the dark matter at the level of $sim3%$ on scales of $1leq k/({h,{rm Mpc}^{-1}})leq 5$. The dark matter velocity divergence power spectrum at $k{stackrel{<}{{}_sim}}0.5{h,{rm Mpc}^{-1}}$ is changed by less than $1%$. The 2D redshift-space power spectrum is affected at the level of $sim6%$ at $|vec{k}|{stackrel{>}{{}_sim}} 1{h,{rm Mpc}^{-1}}$ (for $mu>0.5$), but for $|vec{k}|leq 0.4{h,{rm Mpc}^{-1}}$ it differs by less than $1%$. We report vanishingly small baryonic velocity bias for haloes: the peculiar velocities of haloes with $M_{200}>3times10^{11}{{rm M}_{odot}}$ (hosting galaxies with $M_{*}>10^9{{rm M}_{odot}}$) are affected at the level of at most $1~$km/s, which is negligible for $1%$-precision cosmology. We caution that since EAGLE overestimates cluster gas fractions it may also underestimate the impact of baryons, particularly for the total matter power spectrum. Nevertheless, our findings suggest that for theoretical modelling of redshift space distortions and galaxy velocity-based statistics, baryons and their back-reaction can be safely ignored at the current level of observational accuracy. However, we confirm that the modelling of the total matter power spectrum in weak lensing studies needs to include realistic galaxy formation physics in order to achieve the accuracy required in the precision cosmology era.

We report on the detection of three strong HI absorbers originating in the outskirts (i.e., impact parameter, $rho_{rm cl} approx (1.6-4.7) r_{500}$) of three massive ($M_{500}sim3times10^{14} M_{odot}$) clusters of galaxies at redshift $z_{rm cl} ap prox 0.46$, in the $Hubble Space Telescope$ Cosmic Origins Spectrograph ($HST$/COS) spectra of 3 background UV-bright quasars. These clusters were discovered by the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope Sunyaev$-$Zeldovich (SZ) effect survey. All three COS spectra show partial Lyman limit absorber with $N(HI) > 10^{16.5} rm cm^{-2}$ near the photometric redshifts ($|Delta z/(1+z)| approx 0.03$) of the clusters. The compound probability of random occurrence of all three absorbers is $<0.02$%, indicating that the absorbers are most likely related to the targeted clusters. We find that the outskirts of these SZ-selected clusters are remarkably rich in cool gas compared to existing observations of other clusters in the literature. The effective Doppler parameters of the Lyman series lines, obtained using single cloud curve-of-growth (COG) analysis, suggest a non-thermal/turbulent velocity of a few $times10 rm km s^{-1}$ in the absorbing gas. We emphasize the need for uniform galaxy surveys around these fields and for more UV observations of QSO-cluster pairs in general in order to improve the statistics and gain further insights into the unexplored territory of the largest collapsed cosmic structures.
