Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) have been proposed as candidate states of matter for the interior of neutron stars. Specifically, Chavanis and Harko obtained the mass-radius relation for a BEC star and proposed that the recently discovered neutron stars with masses around 2$M_odot$ are BEC stars. They employed a barotropic equation of state (EOS), with one free parameter, that was first found by Colpi, Wasserman, and Shapiro (CSW), to describe them and derive stable equilibrium configurations of spinning BEC stars in General Relativity. In this work we show that while it is true that BECs allow for compact object masses as heavy as the heaviest observed ones, such stars cannot simultaneously have radii that are small enough to be consistent with the latest observations, in spite of the flexibility available in the EOS in the form of the free parameter. In fact, our conclusion applies to any spinning relativistic boson star that obeys the CSW EOS.

It is usually thought that a single equation of state (EoS) model correctly represents cores of all compact stars. Here we emphasize that two families of compact stars, viz., neutron stars and strange stars, can coexist in nature, and that neutron st ars can get converted to strange stars through the nucleation process of quark matter in the stellar center. From our fully general relativistic numerical computations of the structures of fast-spinning compact stars, known as millisecond pulsars, we find that such a stellar conversion causes a simultaneous spin-up and decrease in gravitational mass of these stars. This is a new type of millisecond pulsar evolution through a new mechanism, which gives rise to relatively lower mass compact stars with higher spin rates. This could have implication for the observed mass and spin distributions of millisecond pulsars. Such a stellar conversion can also rescue some massive, spin-supported millisecond pulsars from collapsing into black holes. Besides, we extend the concept of critical mass $M_{rm cr}$ for the neutron star sequence (Berezhiani et al. 2003; Bombaci et al. 2004) to the case of fast-spinning neutron stars, and point out that neutron star EoS models cannot be ruled out by the stellar mass measurement alone. Finally, we emphasize the additional complexity for constraining EoS models, for example, by stellar radius measurements using X-ray observations, if two families of compact stars coexist.
It has for long been an article of faith among astrophysicists that black hole spin energy is responsible for powering the relativistic jets seen in accreting black holes. Two recent advances have strengthened the case. First, numerical general relat ivistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accreting spinning black holes show that relativistic jets form spontaneously. In at least some cases, there is unambiguous evidence that much of the jet energy comes from the black hole, not the disk. Second, spin parameters of a number of accreting stellar-mass black holes have been measured. For ballistic jets from these systems, it is found that the radio luminosity of the jet correlates with the spin of the black hole. This suggests a causal relationship between black hole spin and jet power, presumably due to a generalized Penrose process.
We study the properties of Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) systems consisting of two scalars, focusing on both the case where the BEC is stellar scale as well as the case when it is galactic scale. After studying the stability of such systems and maki ng contact with existing single scalar limits, we undertake a numerical study of the two interacting scalars using Einstein-Klein-Gordon (EKG) equations, including both non-gravitational self-interactions and interactions between the species. We show that the presence of extra scalars and possible interactions between them can leave unique imprints on the BEC system mass profile, especially when the system transitions from being dominated by one scalar to being dominated by the other. At stellar scales (nonlinear regime,) we observe that a repulsive interaction between the two scalars of the type $+phi_1^2 phi_2^2$ can stabilize the BEC system and support it up to high compactness, a phenomenon only known to exist in the $+phi^4$ system. We provide simple analytic understanding of this behavior and point out that it can lead to interesting gravitational wave signals at LIGO-Virgo. At galactic scales, on the other hand, we show that two-scalar BECs can address the scaling problem that arises when one uses ultralight dark matter mass profiles to fit observed galactic core mass profiles. In the end, we construct a particle model of two ultralight scalars with the repulsive $phi_1^2 phi_2^2$ interaction using collective symmetry breaking. We develop a fast numerical code that utilizes the relaxation method to solve the EKG system, which can be easily generalized to multiple scalars.
Boundaries strongly affect the behavior of quantized vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a phenomenon particularly evident in elongated cigar-shaped traps where vortices tend to orient along a short direction to minimize energy. Remarkably, contri butions to the angular momentum of these vortices are tightly confined to the region surrounding the core, in stark contrast to untrapped condensates where all atoms contribute $hbar$. We develop a theoretical model and use this, in combination with numerical simulations, to show that such localized vortices precess in an analogous manner to that of a classical spinning top. We experimentally verify this spinning-top behavior with our real-time imaging technique that allows for the tracking of position and orientation of vortices as they dynamically evolve. Finally, we perform an in-depth numerical investigation of our real-time expansion and imaging method, with the aim of guiding future experimental implementation, as well as outlining directions for its improvement.
CMB observations provide a precise measurement of the primordial power spectrum on large scales, corresponding to wavenumbers $10^{-3}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ < k < 0.1 Mpc$^{-1}$, [1-8]. Luminous red galaxies and galaxy clusters probe the matter power spectrum on overlapping scales (0.02 Mpc$^{-1}$ < k < 0.7 Mpc$^{-1}$ [9-18]), while the Lyman-alpha forest reaches slightly smaller scales (0.3 Mpc$^{-1} < k < 3$ Mpc$^{-1}$; [19]). These observations indicate that the primordial power spectrum is nearly scale-invariant with amplitude close to $2 times 10^{-9}$, [5, 20-25]. They also strongly support Inflation and motivate us to obtain constraints reaching to smaller scales on the primordial curvature power spectrum and by implication on Inflation. One could obtain limits to much higher values of $k < 10^5$ Mpc$^{-1}$ and with less sensitivity even higher to $k < 10^{19}- 10^{23}$ Mpc$^{-1}$ using limits from CMB spectral distortions(SD)and on ultracompact minihalo objects(UCMHs)and Primordial Black Holes(PBHs). In this paper, we revisit and collect all the known constraints on both PBHs and UCMHs. We show that unless one uses SD, PBHs give us very relaxed bounds on the primordial curvature perturbations. UCMHs are very informative over a reasonable $k$ range($3 < k < 10^6$ Mpc$^{-1}$)and lead to significant upper-bounds on the curvature spectrum. We review the conditions under which the tighter constraints on the UCMHs could imply extremely strong bounds on the fraction of Dark Matter that could be PBHs. Failure to satisfy these conditions would lead to over production of the UCMHs, which is inconsistent with the observations. Therefore, we can almost rule out PBH within their overlap scales with the UCMHs. We consider the UCMH bounds from experiments such as $gamma$-rays, Neutrinos, Reionization, pulsar-timing and SD. We show that they lead to comparable results independent of the form of DM.
