We examine the impact of the strength of the E_R = 127 keV, 26Al(p,g)27Si resonance on 26Al production in classical nova explosions and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Thermonuclear 26Al(p,g)27Si reaction rates are determined using different assumed strengths for this resonance and representative stellar model calculations of these astrophysical environments are performed using these different rates. Predicted 26Al yields in our models are not sensitive to differences in rates determined using zero and a commonly stated upper limit corresponding to wg_UL = 0.0042 micro-eV for this resonance strength. Yields of 26Al decrease by 6% and, more significantly, up to 30%, when a strength of 24 x wg_UL = 0.1 micro-eV is assumed in the adopted nova and AGB star models, respectively. Given that the value of wg_UL was deduced from a single, background-dominated 26Al(3He,d)27Si experiment where only upper limits on differential cross sections were determined, we encourage new experiments to confirm the strength of the 127 keV resonance.

The COMPTEL instrument performed the first mapping of the 1.809 MeV photons in the Galaxy, triggering considerable interest in determing the sources of interstellar 26Al. The predicted 26Al is too low compared to the observation, for a better underst anding more accurate rates for the 25Mg(p; gamma)26Al reaction are required. The 25Mg(p;gamma)26Al reaction has been investigated at the resonances at Er= 745; 418; 374; 304 keV at Ruhr-Universitat-Bochum using a Tandem accelerator and a 4piNaI detector. In addition the resonance at Er = 189 keV has been measured deep underground laboratory at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, exploiting the strong suppression of cosmic background. This low resonance has been studied with the 400 kV LUNA accelerator and a HPGe detector. The preliminary results of the resonance strengths will be reported.
The $^{17}$O(p,$alpha$)$^{14}$N reaction plays a key role in various astrophysical scenarios, from asymptotic giant branch stars to classical novae. It affects the synthesis of rare isotopes such as $^{17}$O and $^{18}$F, which can provide constraint s on astrophysical models. A new direct determination of the $E_{rm R}~=~64.5$~keV resonance strength performed at the Laboratory for Underground Nuclear Astrophysics accelerator has led to the most accurate value to date, $omegagamma = 10.0 pm 1.4_{rm stat} pm 0.7_{rm syst}$~neV, thanks to a significant background reduction underground and generally improved experimental conditions. The (bare) proton partial width of the corresponding state at $E_{rm x} = 5672$~keV in $^{18}$F is $Gamma_{rm p} = 35 pm 5_{rm stat} pm 3_{rm syst}$~neV. This width is about a factor of 2 higher than previously estimated thus leading to a factor of 2 increase in the $^{17}$O(p,$alpha$)$^{14}$N reaction rate at astrophysical temperatures relevant to shell hydrogen-burning in red giant and asymptotic giant branch stars. The new rate implies lower $^{17}$O/$^{16}$O ratios, with important implications on the interpretation of astrophysical observables from these stars.
Model predictions of the amount of the radioisotope 26Al produced in hydrogen-burning environments require reliable estimates of the thermonuclear rates for the 26gAl(p,{gamma})27Si and 26mAl(p,{gamma})27Si reactions. These rates depend upon the spec troscopic properties of states in 27Si within about 1 MeV of the 26gAl+p threshold (Sp = 7463 keV). We have studied the 28Si(3He,{alpha})27Si reaction at 25 MeV using a high-resolution quadrupole-dipole-dipole-dipole magnetic spectrograph. For the first time with a transfer reaction, we have constrained J{pi} values for states in 27Si over Ex = 7.0 - 8.1 MeV through angular distribution measurements. Aside from a few important cases, we generally confirm the energies and spin-parity assignments reported in a recent {gamma}-ray spectroscopy study. The magnitudes of neutron spectroscopic factors determined from shell-model calculations are in reasonable agreement with our experimental values extracted using this reaction.

Nuclear shell model predictions for the proton spectroscopic factor of the 1+, Ex = 5.68 MeV level in 26Si are about fifty times smaller than the value suggested by the measured (a,3He) cross section for the Ex = 5.69 MeV mirror level in 26Mg, assumi ng purely single-particle transfer. Given that the 5.69 MeV level has been very weakly, if it all, populated in previous studies of the simpler 25Mg(d,p) reaction, it is unclear if the (a,3He) result is a true single-particle spectroscopic factor. If we assume the (a,3He) result, the thermonuclear rate of the 25Al(p,g)26Si reaction would increase by factors of 6 - 50 over stellar temperatures of T = 0.05 - 0.2 GK. We examine the implications of this enhanced rate for model predictions of nucleosynthesis in classical nova explosions.

In order to measure the energy of neutron fields, with energy ranging from 8 keV to 1 MeV, a new primary standard is being developed at the IRSN (Institute for Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety). This project, micro-TPC (Micro Time Projection Chambe r), carried out in collaboration with the LPSC (Laboratoire de Physique Subatomique et de Cosmologie), is based on the nuclear recoil detector principle. The instrument is presented with the associated method to measure the neutron energy. This article emphasizes the proton energy calibration procedure and energy measurements of a neutron field produced at 127 keV with the IRSN facility AMANDE.
