We present experimental and theoretical evidence that an interesting quantum many-body effect -- quasi-particle breakdown -- occurs in the quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 Ising-like ferromagnet CoNb$_2$O$_6$ in its paramagnetic phase at high transverse field as a result of explicit breaking of spin inversion symmetry. We propose a quantum spin Hamiltonian capturing the essential one-dimensional physics of CoNb$_2$O$_6$ and determine the exchange parameters of this model by fitting the calculated single particle dispersion to the one observed experimentally in applied transverse magnetic fields. We present high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the single particle dispersion which observe anomalous broadening effects over a narrow energy range at intermediate energies. We propose that this effect originates from the decay of the one particle mode into two-particle states. This decay arises from (i) a finite overlap between the one-particle dispersion and the two-particle continuum in a narrow energy-momentum range and (ii) a small misalignment of the applied field away from the direction perpendicular to the Ising axis in the experiments, which allows for non-zero matrix elements for decay by breaking the $mathbb{Z}_2$ spin inversion symmetry of the Hamiltonian.

Close to the quantum critical point of the transverse-field Ising spin-chain model, an exotic dynamic spectrum was predicted to emerge upon a perturbative longitudinal field. The dynamic spectrum consists of eight particles and is governed by the sym metry of the $E_8$ Lie algebra. Here we report on high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy of quantum spin dynamics in the ferromagnetic Ising-chain material CoNb$_2$O$_6$. At 0.25 K in the magnetically ordered phase we identify characteristics of the first six $E_8$ particles, $mathbf{m}_1$ to $mathbf{m}_6$, and the two-particle ($mathbf{m}_1+mathbf{m}_2$) continuum in an applied transverse magnetic field of $B_c^{1D}=4.75$ T, before the three-dimensional magnetic order is suppressed above $B_c^{3D}approx 5.3$ T. The observation of the higher-energy particles ($mathbf{m}_3$ to $mathbf{m}_6$) above the low-energy two-particle continua features quantum many-body effects in the exotic dynamic spectrum.
Magnetization measurements on single-crystal cubic SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ with an applied magnetic field of along three inequivalent high symmetry directions $[100]$, $[110]$, and $[111]$ reveal weak magnetic anisotropy. The fits of the magnetic susceptibil ity to the result from a quantum Monte Carlo simulation on the Heisenberg spin-chain model, where the chain is formed via the dominant third-nearest-neighbor exchange interaction $J_3$, yield the intra-chain interaction $(J_3/k_B)$ between 50.12(7) K for the applied field along $[110]$ and 52.5(2) K along $[100]$ with about the same $g$-factor of 2.2. Single-crystal neutron diffraction unveils the transition to the magnetic ordered state as evidenced by the onset of the magnetic Bragg intensity at $T_textrm{N1}=5.25(9)$ K with no anomaly of the second transition at $T_textrm{N2}$ reported previously. Based on irreducible representation theory and magnetic space group analysis of powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction data, the magnetic structure in the Shubnikov space group $P4_132$, where the Cu$^{2+}$~$S=1/2$ spins antiferromagnetically align in the direction perpendicular to the spin chain, is proposed. The measured ordered moment of $0.52(6)~mu_B$, which represents 48% reduction from the expected value of $1~mu_B$, suggests the remaining influence of frustration resulting from the $J_1$ and $J_2$ bonds.
Combining inelastic neutron scattering and numerical simulations, we study the quasi-one dimensional Ising anisotropic quantum antiferromagnet bacovo in a longitudinal magnetic field. This material shows a quantum phase transition from a Neel ordered phase at zero field to a longitudinal incommensurate spin density wave at a critical magnetic field of 3.8 T. Concomitantly the excitation gap almost closes and a fundamental reconfiguration of the spin dynamics occurs. These experimental results are well described by the universal Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory developed for interacting spinless fermions in one dimension. We especially observe the rise of mainly longitudinal excitations, a hallmark of the unconventional low-field regime in Ising-like quantum antiferromagnet chains.
Long-range order in quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) arrays of superconducting nanowires is established via a dimensional crossover from a fluctuating 1D regime to a phase-coherent 3D ground state. If a homogeneous crystalline superconductor exhibits suff iciently high uniaxial anisotropy, a similar 1D$rightarrow$3D crossover has been predicted to occur, provided that single-particle hopping transverse to the 1D axis is absent in the normal state. Here we present magnetic penetration depth and electrical transport data in single crystals of q1D Tl$_2$Mo$_6$Se$_6$, which reveal a 1D$rightarrow$3D superconducting dimensional crossover. Both experimental techniques uncover multiple energy scales within the superconducting transition, which describe a sequence of fluctuating regimes. As the temperature is reduced below $T_{ons}=$~6.7~K, 1D pairing fluctuations are replaced by 1D phase slips below $T_psim$~5.9~K. These give way to 3D phase fluctuations below $T_{ab}=$~4.9~K, prior to dimensional crossover at $T_{x2}sim$~4.4~K. The electrical resistivity below $T_{ab}$ is quantitatively consistent with the establishment of phase coherence through gradual binding of Josephson vortex strings to form 3D loops. An anomalously low superfluid density persist down to $sim$3~K before rising steeply --- in agreement with a theoretical model for crossovers in q1D superconductors, and suggesting that a small population of unbound, weakly-pinned vortices survives below the crossover. The observation of a dimensional crossover within the superconducting state has important consequences for the low-temperature normal state in Tl$_2$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ and similar q1D metals, which may exhibit one-dimensional behavior over far greater temperature ranges than band structure calculations suggest.
We report a detailed magnetotransport study of the highly anisotropic quasi-one-dimensional oxide Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ whose in-chain electrical resistivity diverges below a temperature $T_{rm min} sim$ 25 K. For $T < T_{rm min}$, a magnetic fiel d applied parallel to the conducting chain induces a large negative magnetoresistance and ultimately, the recovery of a metallic state. We show evidence that this insulator/metal crossover is a consequence of field-induced suppression of a density-wave gap in a highly one-dimensional conductor. At the highest fields studied, there is evidence for the possible emergence of a novel superconducting state with an onset temperature $T_c >$ 10 K.
