In the extreme high intensity regime of electromagnetic (EM) waves in plasma, the acceleration process is found to be dominated by the ponderomotive acceleration (PA). While the wakefields driven by the ponderomotive force of the relativistic intensity EM waves are important, they may be overtaken by the PA itself in the extreme high intensity regime when the dimensionless vector potential $a_0$ of the EM waves far exceeds unity. The energy gain by this regime (in 1D) is shown to be (approximately) proportional to $a_0^2$. Before reaching this extreme regime, the coexistence of the PA and the wakefield acceleration (WA) is observed where the wave structures driven by the wakefields show the phenomenon of multiple and folded wave-breakings. Investigated are various signatures of the acceleration processes such as the dependence on the mass ratio for the energy gain as well as the energy spectral features. The relevance to high energy cosmic ray acceleration and to the relativistic laser acceleration is considered.

The dependence of the mean kinetic energy of laser-accelerated electrons on the laser intensity, so-called ponderomotive scaling, was derived theoretically with consideration of the motion of a single electron in oscillating laser fields. This scalin g explains well the experimental results obtained with high-intensity pulses and durations shorter than a picosecond; however, this scaling is no longer applicable to the multi-picosecond (multi-ps) facility experiments. Here, we experimentally clarified the generation of the super-ponderomotive-relativistic electrons (SP-REs) through multi-ps relativistic laser-plasma interactions using prepulse-free LFEX laser pulses that were realized using a plasma mirror (PM). The SP-REs are produced with direct laser acceleration assisted by the self-generated quasi-static electric field and with loop-injected direct acceleration by the self- generated quasi-static magnetic field, which grow in a blowout plasma heated by a multi-ps laser pulse. Finally, we theoretically derive the threshold pulse duration to boost the acceleration of REs, which provides an important insight into the determination of laser pulse duration at kilojoule- petawatt laser facilities.
A plasma flow behind a relativistic electron bunch propagating through a cold plasma is found assuming that the transverse and longitudinal dimensions of the bunch are small and the bunch can be treated as a point charge. In addition, the bunch charg e is assumed small. A simplified system of equations for the plasma electrons is derived and it is shown that, through a simple rescaling of variables, the bunch charge can be eliminated from the equations. These equations have a unique solution, with an ion cavity formed behind the driver. The equations are solved numerically and the scaling of the cavity dimensions with the driver charge is obtained. A numerical solution for the case of a positively charged driver is also found.

We analyze the electromagnetic field of a short relativistic electron beam propagating in a round, hollow dielectric channel. We show that if the beam propagates with an offset relative to the axis of the channel, in a steady state, its electromagnet ic field outside of the channel extends to large radii and carries an energy that scales as the Lorentz factor $gamma$ squared (in contrast to the scaling $lngamma$ without the channel). When this energy is converted into a terahertz pulse and focused on a target, the electric field in the focus can greatly exceed typical values of the field that are currently achieved by sending beams through thin metallic foils.
The dynamics of wave-particle interactions in magnetized plasmas restricts the wave amplitude to moderate values for particle beam acceleration from rest energy. We analyze how a perturbing invariant robust barrier modifies the phase space of the sys tem and enlarges the wave amplitude interval for particle acceleration. For low values of the wave amplitude, the acceleration becomes effective for particles with initial energy close to the rest energy. For higher values of the wave amplitude, the robust barrier controls chaos in the system and restores the acceleration process. We also determine the best position for the perturbing barrier in phase space in order to increase the final energy of the particles.
We show using particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and theoretical analysis that a high-quality electron beam whose density is modulated at angstrom scales can be generated directly using density downramp injection in a periodically modulated density i n nonlinear plasma wave wakefields. The density modulation turns on and off the injection of electrons at the period of the modulation. Due to the unique longitudinal mapping between the electrons initial positions and their final trapped positions inside the wake, this results in an electron beam with density modulation at a wavelength orders of magnitude shorter than the plasma density modulation. The ponderomotive force of two counter propagating lasers of the same frequency can generate a density modulation at half the laser wavelength. Assuming a laser wavelength of $0.8micrometer$, fully self-consistent OSIRIS PIC simulations show that this scheme can generate high quality beams modulated at wavelengths between 10s and 100 angstroms. Such beams could produce fully coherent, stable, hundreds of GW X-rays by going through a resonant undulator.
