Working in a subspace with dimensionality much smaller than the dimension of the full Hilbert space, we deduce exact 4-particle ground states in 2D samples containing hexagonal repeat units and described by Hubbard type of models. The procedure identifies first a small subspace ${cal{S}}$ in which the ground state $|Psi_grangle$ is placed, than deduces $|Psi_grangle$ by exact diagonalization in ${cal{S}}$. The small subspace is obtained by the repeated application of the Hamiltonian $hat H$ on a carefully chosen starting wave vector describing the most interacting particle configuration, and the wave vectors resulting from the application of $hat H$, till the obtained system of equations closes in itself. The procedure which can be applied in principle at fixed but arbitrary system size and number of particles, is interesting by its own since provides exact information for the numerical approximation techniques which use a similar strategy, but apply non-complete basis for ${cal{S}}$. The diagonalization inside ${cal{S}}$ provides an incomplete image about the low lying part of the excitation spectrum, but provides the exact $|Psi_grangle$. Once the exact ground state is obtained, its properties can be easily analyzed. The $|Psi_grangle$ is found always as a singlet state whose energy, interestingly, saturates in the $U to infty$ limit. The unapproximated results show that the emergence probabilities of different particle configurations in the ground state present Zittern (trembling) characteristics which are absent in 2D square Hubbard systems. Consequently, the manifestation of the local Coulomb repulsion in 2D square and honeycomb types of systems presents differences, which can be a real source in the differences in the many-body behavior.

We model conducting pentagon chains with a multi orbital Hubbard model and prove that well below half filling exact ferromagnetic ground states appear. The rigorous method we use is based on the transformation of original hamiltonian into positive se midefinite form. This technique is independent of the spatial dimesion and does not require integrability of the model. The obtained ferromagnetism is connected to dispersionless bands but in a much broader sense than flat band ferromagnetism requires, where on every site a Hubbard term is present. In our case only a small percentage of, even randomly distributed, sites are only interacting.
Topological phases typically encode topology at the level of the single particle band structure. But a remarkable class of models shows that quantum anomalous Hall effects can be driven exclusively by interactions, while the parent non-interacting ba nd structure is topologically trivial. Unfortunately, these models have so far relied on interactions that do not spatially decay and are therefore unphysical. We study a model of spinless fermions on a decorated honeycomb lattice. Using complementary methods, mean-field theory and exact diagonalization, we find a robust quantum anomalous Hall phase arising from spatially decaying interactions. Our finding paves the way for observing the quantum anomalous Hall effect driven entirely by interactions.

Graphene SU(4) quantum Hall symmetry is extended to SO(8), permitting analytical solutions for graphene in a magnetic field that break SU(4) spontaneously. We recover standard graphene SU(4) physics as one limit, but find new phases and new propertie s that may be relevant for understanding the ground state. The graphene SO(8) symmetry is found to be isomorphic to one that occurs extensively in nuclear structure physics, and very similar to one that describes high-temperature superconductors, suggesting deep mathematical connections among these physically-different fermionic systems.
Electrons in artificial lattices enable explorations of the impact of repulsive Coulomb interactions in a tunable system. We have trapped two-dimensional electrons belonging to a gallium arsenide quantum well in a nanofabricated lattice with honeycom b geometry. We probe the excitation spectrum in a magnetic field identifying novel collective modes that emerge from the Coulomb interaction in the artificial lattice as predicted by the Mott-Hubbard model. These observations allow us to determine the Hubbard gap and suggest the existence of a novel Coulomb-driven ground state. This approach offers new venues for the study of quantum phenomena in a controllable solid-state system.
The electronic ground state in many iridate materials is described by a complex wave-function in which spin and orbital angular momenta are entangled due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Such a localized electronic state carries an effectiv e total angular momentum of $J_{eff}=1/2$. In materials with an edge-sharing octahedral crystal structure, such as the honeycomb iridates Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3, these $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments are expected to be coupled through a special bond-dependent magnetic interaction, which is a necessary condition for the realization of a Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, this relativistic electron picture is challenged by an alternate description, in which itinerant electrons are confined to a benzene-like hexagon, keeping the system insulating despite the delocalized nature of the electrons. In this quasi-molecular orbital (QMO) picture, the honeycomb iridates are an unlikely choice for a Kitaev spin liquid. Here we show that the honeycomb iridate Li2IrO3 is best described by a $J_{eff}=1/2$ state at ambient pressure, but crosses over into a QMO state under the application of small (~ 0.1 GPa) hydrostatic pressure. This result illustrates that the physics of iridates is extremely rich due to a delicate balance between electronic bandwidth, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field, and electron correlation.
