The stellar content in and around Sh2-311 region have been studied using the deep optical observations as well as near-infrared (NIR) data from 2MASS. The region contains three clusters, viz. NGC 2467, Haffner 18 and Haffner 19. We have made an attempt to distinguish the stellar content of these individual regions as well as to re-determine their fundamental parameters such as distance, reddening, age, onto the basis of a new and more extended optical and infrared photometric data set. NGC 2467 and Haffner 19 are found to be located in the Perseus arm at the distances of 5.0 $pm$ 0.4 kpc and 5.7 $pm$ 0.4 kpc, respectively, whereas Haffner 18 is located at the distance of 11.2 $pm$ 1.0 kpc. The clusters NGC 2467 and Haffner 19 might have formed from the same molecular cloud, whereas the cluster Haffner 18 is located in the outer galactic arm, i.e. the Norma-Cygnus arm. We identify 8 class II young stellar objects (YSOs) using the NIR $(J - H)/(H - K)$ two colour diagram. We have estimated the age and mass of the YSOs identified in the present work and those by Snider et al. (2009) using the $V/(V - I)$ colour-magnitude diagram. The estimated ages and mass range of the majority of the YSOs are $lesssim$1 Myr and $sim$0.4 - 3.5 msun, respectively, indicating that these sources could be T-Tauri stars or their siblings. Spatial distribution of the YSOs shows that some of the YSOs are distributed around the H II region Sh2-311, suggesting a triggered star formation at its periphery.

We report the observational findings of the Sh2-112 H{sc ii} region by using the multiwavelength data analysis ranging from optical to radio wavelengths. This region is powered by a massive O8V-type star BD +45 3216. The surface density distribution and minimum spanning tree analyses of the young stellar object (YSO) candidates in the region reveal their groupings toward the western periphery of the H{sc ii} region. A GMRT radio continuum emission peak is found toward the north-west boundary of the H{sc ii} region and is investigated as a compact/ultra-compact H{sc ii} region candidate powered by a B0-B0.5 type star. Toward the south-west direction, a prominent curved rim-like structure is found in the H$alpha$ image and GMRT radio continuum maps, where the H$_2$ and $^{13}$CO emission is also observed. These results suggest the existence of the ionized boundary layer (IBL) on the surface of the molecular cloud. This IBL is found to be over-pressurized with respect to the internal pressure of the surrounding molecular cloud. This implies that the shocks are propagating/ propagated into the molecular cloud and the young stars identified within it are likely triggered due to the massive star. It is also found that this region is ionization bounded toward the west-direction and density bounded toward the east-direction. Based on the distribution of the ionized gas, molecular material, and the YSO candidates; we propose that the Sh2-112 H{sc ii} region is a good candidate for the blister-type H{sc ii} region which has been evolved on the surface of a cylindrical molecular cloud.
We investigate the star formation activity in the molecular complex associated with the Galactic HII region Sh2-90, using radio-continuum maps obtained at 1280 MHz and 610 MHz, Herschel Hi-GAL observations at 70 -- 500 microns, and deep near-infrared observation at JHK bands, along with Spitzer observations. Sh2-90 presents a bubble morphology in the mid-IR (size ~ 0.9 pc x 1.6 pc). Radio observations suggest it is an evolved HII region with an electron density ~ 144 cm^-3, emission measure ~ 6.7 x 10^4 cm^-6 pc and a ionized mass ~ 55 Msun. From Hi-GAL observations it is found that the HII region is part of an elongated extended molecular cloud (size ~ 5.6 pc x 9.7 pc, H_2 column density >= 3 x 10^21 cm^-2 and dust temperature 18 -- 27 K) of total mass >= 1 x 10^4 Msun. We identify the ionizing cluster of Sh2-90, the main exciting star being an O8--O9 V star. Five cold dust clumps (mass ~ 8 -- 95 Msun), four mid-IR blobs around B stars, and a compact HII region are found at the edge of the bubble. The velocity information derived from CO (J=3-2) data cubes suggests that most of them are associated with the Sh2-90 region. 129 YSOs are identified (Class I, Class II, and near-IR excess sources). The majority of the YSOs are low mass (<= 3 Msun) sources and they are distributed mostly in the regions of high column density. Four candidate Class 0/I MYSOs have been found; they will possibly evolve to stars of mass >= 15 Msun. We suggest multi-generation star formation is present in the complex. From the evidences of interaction, the time scales involved and the evolutionary status of stellar/protostellar sources, we argue that the star formation at the immediate border/edges of Sh2-90 might have been triggered by the expanding HII region. However, several young sources in this complex are probably formed by some other processes.
As part of the ongoing effort to characterize the low-mass (sub)stellar population in a sample of massive young clusters, we have targeted the ~2 Myr old cluster NGC 2244. The distance to NGC 2244 from Gaia DR2 parallaxes is 1.59 kpc, with errors of 1% (statistical) and 11% (systematic). We used the Flamingos-2 near-infrared camera at the Gemini-South telescope for deep multi-band imaging of the central portion of the cluster (~2.4pc^2). We determined membership in a statistical manner, through a comparison of the clusters color-magnitude diagram to that of a control field. Masses and extinctions of the candidate members are then calculated with the help of evolutionary models, leading to the first initial mass function (IMF) of the cluster extending into the substellar regime, with the 90% completeness limit around 0.02 Msun. The IMF is well represented by a broken power law (dN/dM propto M^{-alpha}), with a break at ~0.4 Msun. The slope on the high mass side (0.4 - 7 Msun) is alpha=2.12+-0.08, close to the standard Salpeter slope. In the low-mass range (0.02 - 0.4 Msun), we find a slope alpha=1.03+-0.02, which is at the high end of the typical values obtained in nearby star-forming regions (alpha=0.5-1.0), but still in agreement within the uncertainties. Our results reveal no clear evidence for variations in the formation efficiency of brown dwarfs and very low-mass stars due to the presence of OB stars, or for a change in stellar densities. Our finding rules out photoevaporation and fragmentation of infalling filaments as substantial pathways for brown dwarf formation.
We present here identification and characterization of the young stellar population associated with an active star-forming site Sh2-242. We used our own new optical imaging and spectroscopic observational data, as well as several archival catalogs, e .g., Pan-STARRS 1, $Gaia$ DR2, IPHAS, WIRCam, 2MASS, and $Spitzer$. Slit spectroscopic results confirm the classification of the main ionizing source BD+26 980 as an early-type star of spectral type B0.5 V. The spectrophotometric distance of the star is estimated as 2.08 $pm$ 0.24 kpc, which confirms the source as a member of the cluster. An extinction map covering a large area (diameter $sim$ 50) is generated with $H$ and $K$ photometry toward the region. From the map, three distinct locations of peak extinction complexes ($A_{V}$ $simeq$ 7$-$17 mag) are identified for the very first time. Using the infrared color excess, a total of 33 Class I and 137 Class II young objects are classified within the region. The IPHAS photometry reveals classification of 36 H$alpha$ emitting sources, which might be class II objects. Among 36 H$alpha$ emitting sources, 5 are already identified using infrared excess emission. In total, 201 young objects are classified toward S242 from this study. The membership status of the young sources is further windowed with the inclusion of parallax from the $Gaia$ DR2 catalog. Using the optical and infrared color-magnitude diagrams, the young stellar objects are characterized with an average age of $sim$ 1 Myr and the masses in the range 0.1$-$3.0 $M_odot$. The census of the stellar content within the region is discussed using combined photometric and spectroscopic data.
We present observations of the H-alpha, H-beta, [SII] 6716, 6731 and [NII] 6583 emission lines in the galactic HII region Sh2-235 with the Mapper of Narrow Galaxy Lines (MaNGaL), a tunable filter at the 1-m telescope of Special Astrophysical Observat ory of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We show that the HII region is obscured by neutral material with AV = 2-4 mag. The area with the highest AV is situated to the south-west from the ionizing star and coincides with a maximum detected electron density of >=300 cm(-3). The combination of these results with archive AKARI far-infrared data allows us to estimate the contribution of the front and rear walls to the total column density of neutral material in S235, and explain the three-dimensional structure of the region. The HII region consist of a denser, more compact portion deeply embedded in the neutral medium and the less dense and obscured gas. The front and rear walls of the HII region are inhomogeneous, with the material in the rear wall having a higher column density. We find a two-sided photodissociation region in the dense clump S235 East 1, illuminated by a UV field with G0=50-70 and 200 Habing units in the western and eastern parts, respectively.
