We present the correlations between stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR) and [NII]/Ha flux ratio as indicator of gas-phase metallicity for a sample of 222 galaxies at 0.8 < z < 2.6 and log(M*/Msun)=9.0-11.5 from the LUCI, SINS/zC-SINF and KMOS3D surveys. This sample provides a unique analysis of the mass-metallicity relation (MZR) over an extended redshift range using consistent data analysis techniques and strong-line metallicity indicator. We find a constant slope at the low-mass end of the relation and can fully describe its redshift evolution through the evolution of the characteristic turnover mass where the relation begins to flatten at the asymptotic metallicity. At fixed mass and redshift, our data do not show a correlation between the [NII]/Ha ratio and SFR, which disagrees with the 0.2-0.3dex offset in [NII]/Ha predicted by the fundamental relation between stellar mass, SFR and metallicity discussed in recent literature. However, the overall evolution towards lower [NII]/Ha at earlier times does broadly agree with these predictions.

Understanding the relationship between the formation and evolution of galaxies and their central super massive black holes (SMBH) is one of the main topics in extragalactic astrophysics. Links and feedback may reciprocally affect both black hole and galaxy growth. Observations of the CO line at redshifts of 2-4 are crucial to investigate the gas mass, star formation activity and accretion onto SMBHs, as well as the effect of AGN feedback. Potential correlations between AGN and host galaxy properties can be highlighted by observing extreme objects. Despite their luminosity, hyper-luminous QSOs at z=2-4 are still little studied at mm wavelengths. We targeted CO(3-2) in ULAS J1539+0557, an hyper-luminos QSO (Lbol> 10^48 erg/s) at z=2.658, selected through its unusual red colors in the UKIDSS Large Area Survey (ULAS). We find a molecular gas mass of 4.1+-0.8 10^10 Msun, and a gas fraction of 0.4-0.1, depending mostly on the assumed source inclination. We also find a robust lower limit to the star-formation rate (SFR=250-1600 Msun/yr) and star-formation efficiency (SFE=25-350 Lsun/(K km s-1 pc2) by comparing the observed optical-near-infrared spectral energy distribution with AGN and galaxy templates. The black hole gas consumption timescale, M(H_2)/dM(accretion)/dt, is ~160 Myr, similar or higher than the gas consumption timescale. The gas content and the star formation efficiency are similar to those of other high-luminosity, highly obscured QSOs, and at the lower end of the star-formation efficiency of unobscured QSOs, in line with predictions from AGN-galaxy co-evolutionary scenarios. Further measurements of the (sub)-mm continuum in this and similar sources are mandatory to obtain a robust observational picture of the AGN evolutionary sequence.

We perform a systematic study of outflow in the narrow-line region (NLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at $zsim0.4-0.8$ basing upon a large sample of $sim900$ quasars at $zsim 0.4-0.8$. The sample is extracted from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey by mainly requiring 1) the g-band magnitude is brighter than 19 magnitude; and 2) the [OIII]$lambda5007$ emission line has a signal-to-noise ration larger than 30. Profiles of multiple emission lines are modeled by a sum of several Gaussian functions. The spectral analysis allows us to identify 1) a prevalence of both [OIII]$lambda5007$ line blue asymmetry and bulk velocity blueshift of both [NeIII]$lambda3869$ and [NeV]$lambda3426$ lines, when the [ion{O}{2}]$lambda3727$ line is used as a reference. The velocity offset of [ion{O}{3}]$lambda5007$ line is, however, distributed around zero value, except for a few outliers. 2) not only the significant [OIII]$lambda5007$ line asymmetry, but also the large bulk velocity offsets of [NeIII]$lambda3869$ and [NeV]$lambda3426$ emission lines tend to occur in the objects with high $L/L_{mathrm{Edd}}$, which is considerably consistent with the conclusions based on local AGNs. With three $M_{mathrm{BH}}$ estimation methods, the significance level of the trend is found to be better than $2.9sigma$, $3.2sigma$ and $1.8sigma$ for [OIII], [NeIII] and [NeV], respectively. rm After excluding the role of radio jets, the revealed dependence of NLR gas outflow on $L/L_{mathrm{Edd}}$ allows us to argue that the pressure caused by the wind/radiation launched/emitted from central supermassive black hole is the most likely origin of the outflow in these distant quasars, which implies that the outflow in luminous AGNs up to $zsim1$ have the same origin.

We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array observations of a radio-loud and millimeter-bright galaxy at z=2.6. Gravitational lensing by a foreground galaxy at z~0.2 provides access to physical scales of approximately 360 pc, and we resol ve a 2.5 kpc-radius ring of star-forming molecular gas, traced by atomic carbon CI(1-0) and carbon monoxide CO(4-3). We also detect emission from the cyanide radical, CN(4-3). With a velocity width of 680 km/s, this traces dense molecular gas travelling at velocities nearly a factor of two larger than the rotation speed of the molecular ring. While this could indicate the presence of a dynamical and photochemical interaction between the active galactic nucleus and molecular interstellar medium on scales of a few 100 pc, on-going feedback is unlikely to have a significant impact on the assembly of stellar mass in the molecular ring, given the ~10s Myr depletion timescale due to star formation.
We report on the gas-phase metallicity gradients of a sample of 264 star-forming galaxies at 0.6 < z < 2.6, measured through deep near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope slitless spectroscopy. The observations include 12-orbit depth Hubble/WFC3 G102 gri sm spectra taken as a part of the CANDELS Lya Emission at Reionization (CLEAR) survey, and archival WFC3 G102+G141 grism spectra overlapping the CLEAR footprint. The majority of galaxies (84%) in this sample are consistent with a zero or slightly positive metallicity gradient across the full mass range probed (8.5 < log M_*/M_sun < 10.5). We measure the intrinsic population scatter of the metallicity gradients, and show that it increases with decreasing stellar mass---consistent with previous reports in the literature, but confirmed here with a much larger sample. To understand the physical mechanisms governing this scatter, we search for correlations between the observed gradient and various stellar population properties at fixed mass. However, we find no evidence for a correlation with the galaxy properties we consider---including star-formation rates, sizes, star-formation rate surface densities, and star-formation rates per gravitational potential energy. We use the observed weakness of these correlations to provide material constraints for predicted intrinsic correlations from theoretical models.

We present the data release of the Gemini-South GMOS spectroscopy in the fields of 11 galaxy groups at $0.8<z<1$, within the COSMOS field. This forms the basis of the Galaxy Environment Evolution Collaboration 2 (GEEC2) project to study galaxy evolut ion in haloes with $Msim 10^{13}M_odot$ across cosmic time. The final sample includes $162$ spectroscopically--confirmed members with $R<24.75$, and is $>50$ per cent complete for galaxies within the virial radius, and with stellar mass $M_{rm star}>10^{10.3}M_odot$. Including galaxies with photometric redshifts we have an effective sample size of $sim 400$ galaxies within the virial radii of these groups. We present group velocity dispersions, dynamical and stellar masses. Combining with the GCLASS sample of more massive clusters at the same redshift we find the total stellar mass is strongly correlated with the dynamical mass, with $log{M_{200}}=1.20left(log{M_{rm star}}-12right)+14.07$. This stellar fraction of $~sim 1$ per cent is lower than predicted by some halo occupation distribution models, though the weak dependence on halo mass is in good agreement. Most groups have an easily identifiable most massive galaxy (MMG) near the centre of the galaxy distribution, and we present the spectroscopic properties and surface brightness fits to these galaxies. The total stellar mass distribution in the groups, excluding the MMG, compares well with an NFW profile with concentration $4$, for galaxies beyond $sim 0.2R_{200}$. This is more concentrated than the number density distribution, demonstrating that there is some mass segregation.
