We present H, Ks and L filter polarimetric differential imaging (PDI) data for the transitional disk around HD100546 obtained in 2013, together with an improved re-reduction of previously published 2006 data. We reveal the disk in polarized scattered light in all three filters, achieving an inner working angle of 0.1 arcsec. Additional, short-exposure observations in the H and Ks filter probe the surrounding of the star down to about 0.03 (about 3 AU). HD100546 is fascinating because of its variety of sub-structures possibly related to forming planets in the disk, and PDI is currently the best technique to image them in the near-IR. Our key results are: (1) For the first time ever, we detect a disk in L-band PDI data. (2) We constrain the outer radius of the inner hole to 14pm2 AU and its eccentricity to < 0.133. (3) We detect a dark lane in the front side of the disk, which is likely an effect of the scattering angle and the scattering function of the grains. (4) We find a spiral arm in the northeast which has no obvious connection to spiral arms seen before by other authors further out in the disk, but winds in the same direction (clockwise). (5) The two bright scattering peaks along the semi-major axis are asymmetric, with the southeastern one being significantly brighter. This could be related to the inner companion candidate that is close to the brighter side of the disk at the time of the observations. (6) The scattering color is close to grey between H and Ks filter, but the scattering in L filter is significantly weaker. (7) We measure the position angle of the disk to be 138pm3 deg, consistent with previous observations. (8) We derive the dust scattering function in the H and Ks filter between 35 and 130 deg at two different radii (30-50 and 80-110 AU) and show that our results are consistent with a disk that is more strongly flared in the outer regions.

We present H-band polarized scattered light imagery and JHK high-contrast spectroscopy of the protoplanetary disk around HD 163296 observed with the HiCIAO and SCExAO/CHARIS instruments at Subaru Observatory. The polarimetric imagery resolve a broken ring structure surrounding HD 163296 that peaks at a distance along the major axis of 0.65 (66 AU) and extends out to 0.98 (100 AU) along the major axis. Our 2011 H-band data exhibit clear axisymmetry, with the NW- and SE- side of the disk exhibiting similar intensities. Our data are clearly different than 2016 epoch H-band observations from VLT/SPHERE that found a strong 2.7x asymmetry between the NW- and SE-side of the disk. Collectively, these results indicate the presence of time variable, non-azimuthally symmetric illumination of the outer disk. Based on our 3D-MCRT modeling of contemporaneous IR spectroscopic and H-band polarized intensity imagery of the system, we suggest that while the system could plausibly host an inclined inner disk component, such a component is unlikely to be responsible for producing the observed time-dependent azimuthal variations in the outer scattered light disk of the system. While our SCExAO/CHARIS data are sensitive enough to recover the planet candidate identified from NIRC2 in the thermal IR, we fail to detect an object with a corresponding JHK brightness estimated from the atmospheric models of Baraffe et al. 2003. This suggests that the candidate is either fainter in JHK bands than model predictions, possibly due to extinction from the disk or atmospheric dust/clouds, or that it is an artifact of the dataset/data processing. Our SCExAO/CHARIS data lower the IR mass limits for planets inferred at larger stellocentric separations; however, these ALMA-predicted protoplanet candidates are currently still consistent with direct imaging constraints.
Spatially resolved observations of protoplanetary discs are revealing that their inner regions can be warped or broken from the outer disc. A few mechanisms are known to lead to such 3D structures; among them, the interaction with a stellar companion . We perform a 3D SPH simulation of a circumbinary disc misaligned by $60^circ$ with respect to the binary orbital plane. The inner disc breaks from the outer regions, precessing as a rigid body, and leading to a complex evolution. As the inner disc precesses, the misalignment angle between the inner and outer discs varies by more than $100^circ$. Different snapshots of the evolution are post-processed with a radiative transfer code, in order to produce observational diagnostics of the process. Even though the simulation was produced for the specific case of a circumbinary disc, most of the observational predictions hold for any disc hosting a precessing inner rim. Synthetic scattered light observations show strong azimuthal asymmetries, where the pattern depends strongly on the misalignment angle between inner and outer disc. The asymmetric illumination of the outer disc leads to azimuthal variations of the temperature structure, in particular in the upper layers, where the cooling time is short. These variations are reflected in asymmetric surface brightness maps of optically thick lines, as CO $J$=3-2. The kinematical information obtained from the gas lines is unique in determining the disc structure. The combination of scattered light images and (sub-)mm lines can distinguish between radial inflow and misaligned inner disc scenarios.

Context. In multiple pre-main-sequence systems the lifetime of circumstellar disks appears to be shorter than around single stars, and the actual dissipation process may depend on the binary parameters of the systems. Aims. We report high spatial res olution observations of multiple T Tauri systems at optical and infrared wavelengths. We determine if the components are gravitationally bound and orbital motion is visible, derive orbital parameters and investigate possible correlations between the binary parameters and disk states. Methods. We selected 18 T Tau multiple systems (16 binary and two triple systems, yielding $16 + 2times2=20$ binary pairs) in the Taurus-Auriga star forming region from the survey by Leinert et al. (1993), with spectral types from K1 to M5 and separations from 0.22 (31 AU) to 5.8 (814 AU). We analysed data acquired in 2006-07 at Calar Alto using the AstraLux lucky imaging system, along with data from SPHERE and NACO at the VLT, and from the literature. Results. We found ten pairs to orbit each other, five pairs that may show orbital motion and five likely common proper motion pairs. We found no obvious correlation between the stellar parameters and binary configuration. The 10 $mu$m infra-red excess varies between 0.1 and 7.2 magnitudes (similar to the distribution in single stars, where it is between 1.7 and 9.1), implying that the presence of the binary star does not greatly influence the emission from the inner disk. Conclusions. We have detected orbital motion in young T Tauri systems over a timescale of $approx20$ years. Further observations with even longer temporal baseline will provide crucial information on the dynamics of these young stellar systems.
L1448C(N) is a young protostar in Perseus, driving an outflow and an extremely high-velocity (EHV) molecular jet. We present multi-epoch observations of SiO $J = 8-7$, CO $J = 3-2$ lines, and 345 GHz dust continuum toward L1448C(N) in 2006, 2010, and 2017 with the Submillimeter Array. The knots traced by the SiO line show the averaged proper motion is $sim0.06~{rm yr^{-1}}$ and $sim0.04~{rm yr^{-1}}$ for the blue- and red-shifted jet, respectively. The corresponding transverse velocities are $sim78~{rm km s^{-1}}$ (blueshifted) and $sim52~{rm km s^{-1}}$ (redshifted). Together with the radial velocity, we found the inclination angle of the jets from the plane of the sky to be $sim34$deg$ $ for the blueshifted jet and $sim46$deg$ $ for the redfshifted jet. Given the new inclination angles, the mass-loss rate and mechanical power were refined to be $sim1.8times 10^{-6}~M_odot$ and $sim1.3~L_odot$, respectively. In the epoch of 2017, a new knot is detected at the base of the redshifted jet. We found that the mass-loss rate of the new knot is three times higher than the averaged mass-loss rate of the redshifted jet. Besides, continuum flux has enhanced by $sim37%$ between 2010 and 2017. These imply that the variation of the mass-accretion rate by a factor of $sim3$ has occurred in a short timescale of $sim10-20$ yr. In addition, a knot in the downstream of the redshifted jet is found to be dimming over the three epochs.
We present multiple spectropolarimetric observations of the nearby Type Ia supernova (SN) 2011fe in M101, obtained before, during, and after the time of maximum apparent visual brightness. The excellent time coverage of our spectropolarimetry has all owed better monitoring of the evolution of polarization features than is typical, which has allowed us new insight into the nature of normal SNe Ia. SN 2011fe exhibits time-dependent polarization in both the continuum and strong absorption lines. At early epochs, red wavelengths exhibit a degree of continuum polarization of up to 0.4%, likely indicative of a mild asymmetry in the electron-scattering photosphere. This behavior is more common in sub-luminous SNe Ia than in normal events, such as SN2011fe. The degree of polarization across a collection of absorption lines varies dramatically from epoch to epoch. During the earliest epoch a $lambda$4600-5000 AA complex of absorption lines shows enhanced polarization at a different position angle than the continuum. We explore the origin of these features, presenting a few possible interpretations, without arriving at a single favored ion. During two epochs near maximum, the dominant polarization feature is associated with the Si{sc ii} $lambda$6355 AA absorption line. This is common for SNeIa, but for SN2011fe the polarization of this feature increases after maximum light, whereas for other SNeIa, that polarization feature was strongest before maximum light.
