We present global metallicity properties, metallicity distribution functions (MDFs) and radial metallicity profiles for the six most luminous M31 dwarf galaxy satellites: M32, NGC 205, NGC 185, NGC 147, Andromeda VII, and Andromeda II. The results presented are the first spectroscopic MDFs for dwarf systems surrounding a host galaxy other than the Milky Way. Our sample consists of individual metallicity measurements for 1243 red giant branch (RGB) member stars spread across these six systems. We determine metallicities based on the strength of the Ca II triplet lines using the empirical calibration of Carrera et al.(2013) which is calibrated over the metallicity range -4 < [Fe/H] <+0.5. We find that these M31 satellites lie on the same luminosity-metallicity relationship as the Milky Way dwarf satellites. We do not find a trend between the internal metallicity spread and galaxy luminosity, contrary to previous studies. The MDF widths of And II and And VII are similar to the MW dwarfs of comparable luminosity, however, our four brightest M31 dwarf are more luminous than any of the MW dwarf spheroidals and have broader MDFs. The MDFs of our six M31 dwarfs are consistent with the leaky box model of chemical evolution, although our metallicity errors allow a wide range of evolution models. We find a significant radial gradient in metallicity in only two of our six systems, NGC 185 and Andromeda II, and flat radial metallicity gradients in the rest of our sample with no observed correlation between rotational support and radial metallicity gradients. While the average properties and radial trends of the M31 dwarf galaxies agree with MW counterparts at similar luminosity, the detailed MDFs are different, particularly at the metal-rich end.

We exploit data from the Pan-Andromeda Archaeological Survey (PAndAS) to study the extended structures of M31s dwarf elliptical companions, NGC147 and NGC185. Our wide-field, homogeneous photometry allows to construct deep colour-magnitude diagrams ( CMDs) which reach down to $sim3$ mag below the red giant branch (RGB) tip. We trace the stellar components of the galaxies to surface brightness of $mu_g sim 32$ mag arcsec$^{-2}$ and show they have much larger extents ($sim5$ kpc radii) than previously recognised. While NGC185 retains a regular shape in its peripheral regions, NGC147 exhibits pronounced isophotal twisting due to the emergence of symmetric tidal tails. We fit single Sersic models to composite surface brightness profiles constructed from diffuse light and star counts and find that NGC147 has an effective radius almost 3 times that of NGC185. In both cases, the effective radii that we calculate are larger by a factor of $sim2$ compared to most literature values. We also calculate revised total magnitudes of $M_g=-15.36pm0.04$ for NGC185 and $M_g=-16.36pm0.04$ for NGC147. Using photometric metallicities computed for RGB stars, we find NGC185 to exhibit a metallicity gradient of [Fe/H]$sim-0.15$ dex/kpc over the radial range 0.125 to 0.5 deg. On the other hand, NGC147 exhibits almost no metallicity gradient, $sim-0.02$ dex/kpc from 0.2 to 0.6 deg. The differences in the structure and stellar populations in the outskirts of these systems suggest that tidal influences have played an important role in governing the evolution of NGC147.
We present B,V time-series photometry of Andromeda XIX (And XIX), the most extended (half-light radius of 6.2) of Andromedas dwarf spheroidal companions, that we observed with the Large Binocular Cameras at the Large Binocular Telescope. We surveyed a 23x 23 area centered on And XIX and present the deepest color magnitude diagram (CMD) ever obtained for this galaxy, reaching, at V~26.3 mag, about one magnitude below the horizontal branch (HB). The CMD shows a prominent and slightly widened red giant branch, along with a predominantly red HB, which, however, extends to the blue to significantly populate the classical instability strip. We have identified 39 pulsating variable stars, of which 31 are of RR Lyrae type and 8 are Anomalous Cepheids (ACs). Twelve of the RR Lyrae variables and 3 of the ACs are located within And XIXs half light radius. The average period of the fundamental mode RR Lyrae stars (<Pab> = 0.62 d, sigma= 0.03 d) and the period-amplitude diagram qualify And XIX as an Oosterhoff-Intermediate system. From the average luminosity of the RR Lyrae stars (<V (RR)> = 25.34 mag, sigma= 0.10 mag) we determine a distance modulus of (m-M)$_0$=$24.52pm0.23$ mag in a scale where the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) is $18.5pm0.1$ mag. The ACs follow a well defined Period-Wesenheit (PW) relation that appears to be in very good agreement with the PW relationship defined by the ACs in the LMC.
Milky Way dwarf spheroidal galaxies are the tiniest observed galaxies and are currently associated with the largest fractions of dark matter, which is revealed by their too large velocity dispersions. However, most of them are found near their orbita l pericenters. This leads to a very low probability, P = 2 $10^{-7}$, that they could be long-lived satellites such as sub-halos predicted by cosmological simulations. Their proximity to their pericenters suggests instead that they are affected by tidal shocks, which provide sufficient kinematic energy to explain their high velocity dispersions. Dependency of the dark matter properties to their distance to the Milky Way appears to favor tidally shocked and out of equilibrium dSphs instead of self-equilibrium systems dominated by dark matter.
We spectroscopically identify a sample of carbon stars in the satellites and halo of M31 using moderate-resolution optical spectroscopy from the Spectroscopic and Photometric Landscape of Andromedas Stellar Halo survey. We present the photometric pro perties of our sample of 41 stars, including their brightness with respect to the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) and their distributions in various color-color spaces. This analysis reveals a bluer population of carbon stars fainter than the TRGB and a redder population of carbon stars brighter than the TRGB. We then apply principal component analysis to determine the samples eigenspectra and eigencoefficients. Correlating the eigencoefficients with various observable properties reveals the spectral features that trace effective temperature and metallicity. Putting the spectroscopic and photometric information together, we find the carbon stars in the satellites and halo of M31 to be minimally impacted by dust and internal dynamics. We also find that while there is evidence to suggest that the sub-TRGB stars are extrinsic in origin, it is also possible that they are are particularly faint members of the asymptotic giant branch.

We present deep spectroscopy from Keck/DEIMOS of Andromeda I, III, V, VII, and X, all of which are dwarf spheroidal satellites of M31. The sample includes 256 spectroscopic members across all five dSphs. We confirm previous measurements of the veloci ty dispersions and dynamical masses, and we provide upper limits on bulk rotation. Our measurements confirm that M31 satellites obey the same relation between stellar mass and stellar metallicity as Milky Way (MW) satellites and other dwarf galaxies in the Local Group. The metallicity distributions show similar trends with stellar mass as MW satellites, including evidence in massive satellites for external influence, like pre-enrichment or gas accretion. We present the first measurements of individual element ratios, like [Si/Fe], in the M31 system, as well as measurements of the average [alpha/Fe] ratio. The trends of [alpha/Fe] with [Fe/H] also follow the same galaxy mass-dependent patterns as MW satellites. Less massive galaxies have more steeply declining slopes of [alpha/Fe] that begin at lower [Fe/H]. Finally, we compare the chemical evolution of M31 satellites to M31s Giant Stellar Stream and smooth halo. The properties of the M31 system support the theoretical prediction that the inner halo is composed primarily of massive galaxies that were accreted early. As a result, the inner halo exhibits higher [Fe/H] and [alpha/Fe] than surviving satellite galaxies.
