Signal propagation in the non equilibirum evolution after quantum quenches has recently attracted much experimental and theoretical interest. A key question arising in this context is what principles, and which of the properties of the quench, determine the characteristic propagation velocity. Here we investigate such issues for a class of quench protocols in one of the central paradigms of interacting many-particle quantum systems, the spin-1/2 Heisenberg XXZ chain. We consider quenches from a variety of initial thermal density matrices to the same final Hamiltonian using matrix product state methods. The spreading velocities are observed to vary substantially with the initial density matrix. However, we achieve a striking data collapse when the spreading velocity is considered to be a function of the excess energy. Using the fact that the XXZ chain is integrable, we present an explanation of the observed velocities in terms of excitations in an appropriately defined generalized Gibbs ensemble.

Many-body systems with multiple emergent time scales arise in various contexts, including classical critical systems, correlated quantum materials, and ultra-cold atoms. We investigate such non-trivial quantum dynamics in a new setting: a spin-1 bili near-biquadratic chain. It has a solvable entangled groundstate, but a gapless excitation spectrum that is poorly understood. By using large-scale DMRG simulations, we find that the lowest excitations have a dynamical exponent $z$ that varies from 2 to 3.2 as we vary a coupling in the Hamiltonian. We find an additional gapless mode with a continuously varying exponent $2leq z <2.7$, which establishes the presence of multiple dynamics. In order to explain these striking properties, we construct a continuum wavefunction for the groundstate, which correctly describes the correlations and entanglement properties. We also give a continuum parent Hamiltonian, but show that additional ingredients are needed to capture the excitations of the chain. By using an exact mapping to the non-equilibrium dynamics of a classical spin chain, we find that the large dynamical exponent is due to subdiffusive spin motion. Finally, we discuss the connections to other spin chains and to a family of quantum critical models in 2d.
We study the growth of entanglement in quantum systems with a conserved quantity exhibiting diffusive transport, focusing on how initial inhomogeneities are imprinted on the entropy. We propose a simple effective model, which generalizes the minimal cut picture of textit{Jonay et al.} in such a way that the `line tension of the cut depends on the local entropy density. In the case of noisy dynamics, this is described by a Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) equation coupled to a diffusing field. We investigate the resulting dynamics and find that initial inhomogeneities of the conserved charge give rise to features in the entanglement profile, whose width and height both grow in time as $proptosqrt{t}$. In particular, for a domain wall quench, diffusion restricts entanglement growth to be $S_text{vN} lesssim sqrt{t}$. We find that for charge density wave initial states, these features in the entanglement profile are present even after the charge density has equilibrated. Our conclusions are supported by numerical results on random circuits and deterministic spin chains.
We study the out-of-equilibrium dynamics of one-dimensional quantum Ising-like systems, arising from sudden quenches of the Hamiltonian parameter $g$ driving quantum transitions between disordered and ordered phases. In particular, we consider quench es to values of $g$ around the critical value $g_c$, and mainly address the question whether, and how, the quantum transition leaves traces in the evolution of the transverse and longitudinal magnetizations during such a deep out-of-equilibrium dynamics. We shed light on the emergence of singularities in the thermodynamic infinite-size limit, likely related to the integrability of the model. Finite systems in periodic and open boundary conditions develop peculiar power-law finite-size scaling laws related to revival phenomena, but apparently unrelated to the quantum transition, because their main features are generally observed in quenches to generic values of $g$. We also investigate the effects of dissipative interactions with an environment, modeled by a Lindblad equation with local decay and pumping dissipation operators within the quadratic fermionic model obtainable by a Jordan-Wigner mapping. Dissipation tends to suppress the main features of the unitary dynamics of closed systems. We finally address the effects of integrability breaking, due to further lattice interactions, such as in anisotropic next-to-nearest neighbor Ising (ANNNI) models. We show that some qualitative features of the post-quench dynamics persist, in particular the different behaviors when quenching to quantum ferromagnetic and paramagnetic phases, and the revival phenomena due to the finite size of the system.

We study a XXZ spin-chain in a gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase with time dependent anisotropy of spin exchange interactions. To begin we focus on a linear ramp of $J_z$, starting at XX point and slowly increasing towards the anti-ferrom agnetic Heisenberg point. Although the problem of a linear ramp in the TLL has been recently under intense scrutiny in a perturbative emph{g-ology} framework, an aspect that has been overlooked so far is the role of the Galilean invariance breaking. We find that, although the differential equation that needs to be solved to find time evolution of the system is substantially more complicated, in some cases exact analytic solutions can be given. We obtain them for the linear ramp in the limit of small $J_z$ as well as $J_zrightarrow 1$, and for such protocols that are tailored to keep the Galilean invariance breaking term constant for every $J_z$. We point out the features of dynamics during the quench that stays unaltered, and those that need to be taken with care when Galilean invariance breaking is present. We are able to deduce that it is the shape of the propagating front that is affected in the most pronounced way.
We study gapless quantum spin chains with spin 1/2 and 1: the Fredkin and Motzkin models. Their entangled groundstates are known exactly but not their excitation spectra. We first express the groundstates in the continuum which allows for the calcula tion of spin and entanglement properties in a unified fashion. Doing so, we uncover an emergent conformal-type symmetry, thus consolidating the connection to a widely studied family of Lifshitz quantum critical points in 2d. We then obtain the low lying excited states via large-scale DMRG simulations and find that the dynamical exponent is z = 3.2 in both cases. Other excited states show a different z, indicating that these models have multiple dynamics. Moreover, we modify the spin-1/2 model by adding a ferromagnetic Heisenberg term, which changes the entire spectrum. We track the resulting non-trivial evolution of the dynamical exponents using DMRG. Finally, we exploit an exact map from the quantum Hamiltonian to the non-equilibrium dynamics of a classical spin chain to shed light on the quantum dynamics.
