We use optical integral field spectroscopy and 8 and 24 micron mid-IR observations of the giant HII region NGC 588 in the disc of M33 as input and constraints for two-dimensional tailor-made photoionisation models. Two different geometrical approaches are followed for the modelling structure: i) Each spatial element of the emitting gas is studied individually using models which assume that the ionisation structure is complete in each element to look for azimuthal variations across gas and dust. ii) A single model is considered, and the two-dimensional structure of the gas and the dust are assumed to be due to the projection of an emitting sphere onto the sky. The models in both assumptions reproduce the radial profiles of Hbeta surface brightness, the observed number of ionising photons, and the strong optical emission-line relative intensities. The first approach produces a constant-density matter-bounded thin shell of variable thickness and dust-to-gas ratio, while the second gives place to a radiation-bounded thick shell sphere of decreasing particle density. However, the radial profile of the 8/24 microns IR ratio, depending on the gas and dust geometry, only fits well when the thick-shell model is used. The resulting dust-to-gas mass ratio, which was obtained empirically from the derived dust mass using data from Spitzer, also has a better fit using the thick-shell solution. In both approaches, models support the chemical homogeneity, and the ionisation-parameter radial decrease, These results must be taken with care in view of the very low extinction values that are derived from the IR, as compared to that derived from the Balmer decrement. Besides, the IR can be possibly contaminated with the emission from a cloud of diffuse gas and dust above the plane of the galaxy detected at 250 micron Herschel image.

(ABRIDGED) We present an analysis of NGC588 based on IFS data with PMAS, together with Spitzer images at 8 mi and 24 mi. The extinction distribution in the optical shows complex structure, with maxima correlating in position with those of the emissio n at 24 mi and 8 mi. The Ha luminosity absorbed by the dust within the GHIIR reproduces the structure observed in the 24 mi image, supporting the use of this band as a tracer of recent star formation. A velocity difference of ~50 km/s was measured between the areas of high and low surface brightness, which would be expected if NGC588 were an evolved GHIIR. Line ratios used in the BPT diagnostic diagrams show a larger range of variation in the low surface brightness areas. The ranges are ~0.5 to 1.2 dex for [NII]/Ha, 0.7 to 1.7 dex for [SII]/Ha, and 0.3 to 0.5 dex for [OIII]/Hb. Ratios corresponding to large ionization parameter (U) are found between the peak of the emission in Hb and the main ionizing source decreasing radially outwards within the region. Differences between the integrated and local values of the U tracers can be as high as ~0.8 dex. [OII]/Hb and [OIII]/[OII] yield similar local values for U and consistent with those expected from the integrated spectrum of an HII region ionized by a single star. The ratio [SII]/Ha departs significantly from the range predicted by this scenario, indicating the complex ionization structure in GHIIRs. There is a significant scatter in derivations of Z using strong line tracers as a function of position, caused by variations in the degree of ionization. The scatter is smaller for N2O3 which points to this tracer as a better Z tracer than N2. The comparison between integrated and local line ratio values indicates that measurements of the line ratios of GHIIR in galaxies at distances >~25 Mpc may be dominated by the ionization conditions in their low surface brightness areas.
GMOS-IFU observational data were used to study the detailed two dimensional gas kinematics and morphological structures within the ~500x421 pc^2 of the active Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4501. We provide empirical evidences of possible outflowing material f rom the central zones of NGC 4501 to the observer. In addition, we performed a spectral synthesis and diagnostic diagram analysis to determine respectively the dominant stellar population in the inner disc of this galaxy and to unveil the actual nature of the central engine of NGC 4501. The principal finding of this work is that the central regions of NGC 4501 are dominated by non circular motions connected to probable outflows of matter from the nuclear regions of this galaxy. A predominant old stellar population inhabits the internal zones of NGC 4501 excluding the possibility of ongoing starburst activity in the central parsecs of this galaxy. The latter result is confirmed by the diagnostic diagram analysis that establishes a preponderant active galactic nucleus character for NGC 4501. These outcomes together provide a general description of the gas motion and the corresponding nuclear activity in the internal disc of NGC 4501 in an attempt to elucidate the possible relation among the central activity and the induced kinematic properties of this nearby galaxy.
We present the first high-spatial resolution near-infrared (NIR) imaging of NGC 604, obtained with the NICMOS camera aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). These NICMOS broadband images reveal new NIR point sources, clusters, and diffuse structures . We found an excellent spatial correlation between the 8.4 GHz radio continuum and the 2.2mu-m nebular emission. Moreover, massive young stellar object candidates appear aligned with these radio peaks, reinforcing the idea that those areas are star-forming regions. Three different scaled OB associations are recognized in the NICMOS images. The brightest NIR sources in our images have properties that suggest that they are red supergiant stars, of which one of them was previously known. This preliminary analysis of the NICMOS images shows the complexity of the stellar content of the NGC 604 nebula.
We present the first detailed study of the large, ~30 pc diameter, inner-Galaxy HII region W 39. Radio recombination line observations combined with HI absorption spectra and Galactic rotation models show that the region lies at V(LSR) = +65.4+/-0.5 km/s corresponding to a near kinematic distance of 4.5+/-0.2 kpc. Analysis of radio continuum emission shows that the HII region is being powered by a cluster of OB stars with a combined hydrogen-ionizing luminosity of log(Q) >=50, and that there are three compact HII regions located on the periphery of W 39, each with log(Q)~48.5 (single O7 - O9 V star equivalent). In the infrared, W 39 has a hierarchical bubble morphology, and is a likely site of sequential star formation involving massive stars. Kinematic models of the expansion of W 39 yield timescales of order Myr consistent with a scenario where the formation of the smaller HII regions has been triggered by the expansion of W 39. Using Spitzer GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL data we show that star-formation activity is not distributed uniformly around the periphery of W 39 but is concentrated in two areas that include the compact HII regions as well as a number of intermediate-mass Class I and Class II YSOs.

NGC 253 is a starburst galaxy of SAB(s)c type with increasing interest because of its high activity at unrivaled closeness. Its energetic event is manifested as the vertical gas features in its central molecular zone, for which stellar feedback was p roposed as the driving engine. In order to pursue details of the activity, we have undertaken a kinematic analysis of the ALMA archive data of CO($J$=3--2) emission at the highest resolution $sim$3 pc. We revealed that one of the non-rotating gas components in the central molecular zone shows a loop-like distribution of $sim$200 pc radius. The loop is associated with a star cluster, whereas the cluster is not inside the loop and is not likely as the driver of the loop formation. Further, we find that the bar potential of NGC 253 seems to be too weak to drive the gas motion by the eccentric orbit. As an alternative we frame a scenario that magnetic acceleration by the Parker instability is responsible for the creation of the loop. We show that the observed loop properties are similar to those in the Milky Way, and argue that recent magnetro-hydrodynamics simulations lend support for the picture having the magnetic field strength of $gtrsim$100 $mu$G. We suggest that cluster formation was triggered by the falling gas to the footpoint of the loop, which is consistent with a typical dynamical timescale of the loop $sim$1 Myr.
