We present a general method to unfold energy bands of supercell calculations to primitive Brillouin zone using group theoretical techniques, where an isomorphic factor group is introduced to connect the primitive translation group with the supercell translation group via a direct product. Originating from the translation group symmetry, our method gives an uniform description of unfolding approaches based on various basis sets, and therefore, should be easy to implement in both tight-binding model and existing ab initio code packages using different basis sets. This makes the method applicable to a variety of problems involving the use of supercells, such as defects, disorder, and interfacial reconstructions. As a realistic example, we calculate electronic properties of an monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$ in checkerboard and collinear antiferromagnetic spin configurations, illustrating the potential of our method.

A general force-perturbation-based criterion for solid instability is proposed, which can predict instability including crease without priori knowledge of instability configuration. The crease instability is analyzed in detail, we found that the occu rrence of solid instability does not always correspond to the non-positive definiteness of global stiffness matrix. An element stiffness-based criterion based on material stiffness is proposed as a stronger criterion in order to fast determine the occurrence of instability. This criterion has been shown to degenerate into the criterion for judging instability of certain known phenomena, such as necking and shear band phenomena. Besides, instability in strongly anisotropic materials is also predicted by the element stiffness-based criterion.
The time-dependent numerical renormalization group method (TDNRG) [Anders et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 95}, 196801 (2005)] was recently generalized to multiple quenches and arbitrary finite temperatures [Nghiem et al., Phys. Rev. B {bf 89}, 075118 (2 014)] by using the full density matrix approach [Weichselbaum et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 99}, 076402 (2007)]. In this paper, we numerically implement this formalism to study the response of a quantum impurity system to a general pulse and periodic driving which are approximated by a sufficient number of quenches. We show how the NRG approximation affects the trace of the projected density matrices and the continuity of the time-evolution of a local observable. For the general pulse case, the local observable in the long-time limit exhibits a dependence on the switch-on time, the time interval between the first and last quenches, as well as on the pulse shape. In particular, the long-time limit is improved for longer switch-on times and smoother pulses. This lends support to our earlier suggestion that the long-time limit of observables can be improved by replacing a sudden large quench by a sequence of smaller ones acting over a finite time-interval: longer switch-on times and smoother pulses, i.e., increased adiabaticity, favor relaxation of the system to its correct thermodynamic long-time limit. For the case of periodic driving, we compare the TDNRG results to exact analytic ones for the non-interacting resonant level model, finding better agreement at short to intermediate time scales in the case of smoother driving. Finally, we demonstrate the validity of the multiple-quench TDNRG formalism for arbitrary temperatures by studying the time-evolution of the occupation number in the Anderson impurity model in response to a periodic switching of the local level from the mixed valence to the Kondo regime at finite temperatures.
We present a real-space formulation and implementation of Kohn-Sham Density Functional Theory suited to twisted geometries, and apply it to the study of torsional deformations of X (X = C, Si, Ge, Sn) nanotubes. Our formulation is based on higher ord er finite difference discretization in helical coordinates, uses ab intio pseudopotentials, and naturally incorporates rotational (cyclic) and screw operation (i.e., helical) symmetries. We discuss several aspects of the computational method, including the form of the governing equations, details of the numerical implementation, as well as its convergence, accuracy and efficiency properties. The technique presented here is particularly well suited to the first principles simulation of quasi-one-dimensional structures and their deformations, and many systems of interest can be investigated using small simulation cells containing just a few atoms. We apply the method to systematically study the properties of single-wall zigzag and armchair group-IV nanotubes, as they undergo twisting. For the range of deformations considered, the mechanical behavior of the tubes is found to be largely consistent with isotropic linear elasticity, with the torsional stiffness varying as the cube of the nanotube radius. Furthermore, for a given tube radius, this quantity is seen to be highest for carbon nanotubes and the lowest for those of tin, while nanotubes of silicon and germanium have intermediate values close to each other. We also describe different aspects of the variation in electronic properties of the nanotubes as they are twisted. In particular, we find that akin to the well known behavior of armchair carbon nanotubes, armchair nanotubes of silicon, germanium and tin also exhibit bandgaps that vary periodically with imposed rate of twist, and that the periodicity of the variation scales in an inverse quadratic manner with the tube radius.
Representation of dielectric properties by impedance spectroscopy (IS) is analyzed carefully in this paper. It is found that IS is not a good tool to describe a uniform system because a pseudo relaxation peaks exists at low frequency limit correspond ing to direct current (DC) conductivity and two relaxation peaks appears simultaneously corresponding to one relaxation process for a high loss system with tand>1. However it is very convenient to describe a multiple phase system with IS. When dielectric properties are shown by Cole-Cole equation, only one Cole-Cole arc appears for one phase in IS, therefore it is very easy to distinguish different phases from each other. Especially, since pseudo relaxation exists at low frequency limit for each phase, the location of a certain relaxation process can be deduced by IS without any uncertainty. Furthermore, when dielectric properties are shown with specific impedance spectroscopy (ISI), the information of microstructure can be obtained conveniently. Based on the theoretical results above, dielectric properties of CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) ceramics with giant dielectric constant (GDC) are investigated. Microstructure of CCTO is obtained by dielectric spectrometer and the origin of GDC is found to come from pseudo relaxation of grain.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), an experimental technique based on the photoelectric effect, is arguably the most powerful method for probing the electronic structure of solids. The past decade has witnessed notable progress in ARP ES, including the rapid development of soft-X-ray ARPES, time-resolved ARPES, spin-resolved ARPES and spatially resolved ARPES, as well as considerable improvements in energy and momentum resolution. Consequently , ARPES has emerged as an indispensable experimental probe in the study of topological materials, which have characteristic non-trivial bulk and surface electronic structures that can be directly detected by ARPES. Over the past few years, ARPES has had a crucial role in several landmark discoveries in topological materials, including the identification of topological insulators and topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals. In this Technical Review , we assess the latest developments in different ARPES techniques and illustrate the capabilities of these techniques with applications in the study of topological materials.
