We propose to use the near-threshold electron scattering data for atoms to guide the reliable experimental determination of their electron affinities (EAs), extracted using the Wigner Threshold Law, from laser photodetachment threshold spectroscopy measurements. Data from the near-threshold electron elastic scattering from W, Te, Rh, Sb and Sn atoms calculated using our complex angular momentum method, wherein is embedded the electron-electron correlations and core polarization interaction, are used as illustrations. We conclude with a remark on the relativistic effects on the EA calculation for the heavy At atom.

The interaction between the field emission resonance states and the photodetached electron in an electric field is studied by semiclassical theory. An analytical expression of the photodetachment cross section is derived in the framework. It is found that the Stark shifted image state modulates the photodetachment cross section by adding irregular staircase or smooth oscillation in the spectrum. When the photodetached electron is trapped in Stark shifted image potential well, the detachment spectrum displays an irregular staircase structure which corresponds to the modified Rydberg series. While the photodetached electron is not bound by the surface potential well, the cross secton contains only a smooth oscillation due to the reflection of electronic wave by the field or the surface.
We investigated the two-dimensional electron momentum distributions of atomic negative ions in an intense laser field by solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation (TDSE) and using the first- and 2nd-order strong-field approximations (SFA). We s howed that photoelectron energy distributions and low-energy photoelectron momentum spectra predicted from SFA are in reasonable agreement with the solutions from the TDSE. More importantly, we showed that accurate electron-atom elastic scattering cross sections can be retrieved directly from high-energy electron momentum spectra of atomic negative ions in the laser field. This opens up the possibility of measuring electron-atom and electron-molecule scattering cross sections from the photodetachment of atomic and molecular negative ions by intense short lasers, respectively, with temporal resolutions in the order of femtoseconds.

Here we investigate ground and metastable negative ion formation in low-energy electron collisions with the actinide atoms Th, Pa, U, Np and Pu through the elastic total cross sections (TCSs) calculations. For these atoms, the presence of two or more open d- and f- subshell electrons presents a formidable computational task for conventional theoretical methods, making it difficult to interpret the calculated results. Our robust Regge pole methodology which embeds the crucial electron correlations and the vital core-polarization interaction is used for the calculations. These are the major physical effects mostly responsible for stable negative ion formation in low-energy electron scattering from complex heavy systems. We find that the TCSs are characterized generally by Ramsauer-Townsend minima, shape resonances and dramatically sharp resonances manifesting ground and metastable negative ion formation during the collisions. The extracted from the ground states TCSs anionic binding energies (BEs) are found to be 3.09 eV, 2.98 eV, 3.03 eV, 3.06 eV and 3.25 eV for Th, Pa, U, Np and Pu, respectively. Interestingly, an additional polarization-induced metastable TCS with anionic BE value of 1.22 eV is created in Pu due to the size effect. We also found that our excited states anionic BEs for several of these atoms compare well with the existing theoretical electron affinities including those calculated using the relativistic configuration-interaction method. We conclude that the existing theoretical calculations tend to identify incorrectly the BEs of the resultant excited anionic states with the electron affinities of the investigated actinide atoms; this suggests a need for an unambiguous definition of electron affinity.
A novel method is proposed that uses very slow electron elastic collisions with atoms to identify their presence through the observation of tenuously bound (electron impact energy, E<0.1 eV) and weakly bound (E<1 eV) negative ions, formed as Regge resonances during the collisions.
The negative ion of lanthanum, La$^-$, has one of the richest bound state spectra observed for an atomic negative ion and has been proposed as a promising candidate for laser-cooling applications. In the present experiments, La$^-$ was investigated u sing tunable infrared photodetachment spectroscopy. The relative signal for neutral atom production was measured with a crossed ion-beam--laser-beam apparatus over the photon energy range 590 - 920 meV (2100 - 1350 nm) to probe the continuum region above the La neutral atom ground state. Eleven prominent peaks were observed in the La$^-$ photodetachment cross section due to resonant excitation of quasibound transient negative ion states in the continuum which subsequently autodetach. In addition, thresholds were observed for photodetachment from several bound states of La$^-$ to both ground and excited states of La. The present results provide information on the excited state structure and dynamics of La$^-$ that depend crucially on multielectron correlation effects.
