We report results of a muon spin rotation and relaxation ($mu$SR) study of dilute Pd$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$ alloys, with emphasis on Ni concentrations $x =$ 0.0243 and 0.025. These are close to the critical value $x_mathrm{cr}$ for the onset of ferromagnetic long-range order (LRO), which is a candidate for a quantum critical point. The 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni alloys exhibit similar $mu$SR properties. Both samples are fully magnetic, with average muon local fields $langle B^mathrm{loc}rangle =$ 2.0 and 3.8 mT and Curie temperatures $T_C =$ 1.0 and 2.03 K for 2.43 and 2.5 at.% Ni, respectively, at $T = 0$. The temperature dependence of $langle B^mathrm{loc}rangle$ suggests ordering of Ni spin clusters rather than isolated spins. Just above $T_C$ a two-phase region is found with separate volume fractions of quasistatic short-range order (SRO) and paramagnetism. The SRO fraction decreases to zero with increasing temperature a few kelvin above $T_C$. This mixture of SRO and paramagnetism is consistent with the notion of an inhomogeneous alloy with Ni clustering. The measured values of $T_C$ extrapolate to $x_mathrm{cr}$ = 0.0236 $pm$ 0.0027. The dynamic muon spin relaxation in the vicinity of $T_C$ differs for the two samples: a relaxation-rate maximum at $T_C$ is observed for $x$ = 0.0243, reminiscent of critical slowing down, whereas for $x =$ 0.025 no dynamic relaxation is observed within the $mu$SR time window. The data suggest a mean-field-like transition in this alloy.

The van der Waals ferromagnet Fe5GeTe2 has a Curie temperature TC of about 270 K, which can be raised above room temperature by tuning the Fe deficiency content. To achieve insights into its ferromagnetic exchange, we have studied the critical behavi or by measuring the magnetization in bulk Fe5GeTe2 crystal around the ferromagnetic to paramagnetic phase transition. The analysis of the magnetization by employing various techniques including the modified Arrott plot, Kouvel-Fisher plot and critical isotherm analysis achieved a set of reliable critical exponents with TC = 273.7 K, beta = 0.3457, gamma = 1.40617, and delta = 5.021, suggesting a three-dimensional magnetic exchange with the distance decaying as J(r) ~ (r)$^-4.916, which is close to that of a three-dimensional Heisenberg model with long-range magnetic coupling.
In heterostructures of LaAlO3 (LAO) and SrTiO3 (STO), two nonmagnetic insulators, various forms of magnetism have been observed [1-7], which may [8, 9] or may not [10] arise from interface charge carriers that migrate from the LAO to the interface in an electronic reconstruction [11]. We image the magnetic landscape [5] in a series of n-type samples of varying LAO thickness. We find ferromagnetic patches that appear only above a critical thickness, similar to that for conductivity [12]. Consequently we conclude that an interface reconstruction is necessary for the formation of magnetism. We observe no change in ferromagnetism with gate voltage, and detect ferromagnetism in a non-conducting p-type sample, indicating that the carriers at the interface do not need to be itinerant to generate magnetism. The fact that the ferromagnetism appears in isolated patches whose density varies greatly between samples strongly suggests that disorder or local strain induce magnetism in a population of the interface carriers.
We report a new peculiar effect of the interaction between a sublattice of frustrated quantum spin-1/2 chains and a sublattice of pseudospin-1/2 centers (quantum electric dipoles) uniquely co-existing in the complex oxide Li2ZrCuO4. 7Li nuclear magne tic-, Cu2+ electron spin resonance and a complex dielectric constant data reveal that the sublattice of Li+-derived electric dipoles orders glass like at Tg ~ 70 K yielding a spin site nonequivalency in the CuO2 chains. We suggest that such a remarkable interplay between electrical and spin degrees of freedom might strongly influence the properties of the spiral spin state in Li2ZrCuO4 that is close to a quantum ferromagnetic critical point. In particular that strong quantum fluctuations and/or the glassy behavior of electric dipoles might renormalize the exchange integrals affecting this way the pitch angle of the spiral as well as be responsible for the missing multiferroicity present in other helicoidal magnets.

Ultrathin films of the itinerant ferromagnet SrRuO$_3$ were studied using transport and magnto-optic polar Kerr effect. We find that below 4 monolayers the films become insulating and their magnetic character changes as they loose their simple ferrom agnetic behavior. We observe a strong reduction in the magnetic moment which for 3 monolayers and below lies in the plane of the film. Exchange-bias behavior is observed below the critical thickness, and may point to induced antiferromagnetism in contact with ferromagnetic regions.

The magnetic behaviour of SmN has been investigated in stoichiometric polycrystalline films. All samples show ferromagnetic order with Curie temperature (T_c) of 27 +/- 3 K, evidenced by the occurrence of hysteresis below T_c. The ferromagnetic state is characterised by a very small moment and a large coercive field, exceeding even the maximum applied field of 6 T below about 15 K. The residual magnetisation at 2 K, measured after cooling in the maximum field, is 0.035 mu_B per Sm. Such a remarkably small moment results from a near cancellation of the spin and orbital contributions for Sm3+ in SmN. Coupling to an applied field is therefore weak, explaining the huge coercive field . The susceptibility in the paramagnetic phase shows temperature-independent Van Vleck and Curie-Weiss contributions. The Van Vleck contribution is in quantitative agreement with the field-induced admixture of the J=7/2 excited state and the 5/2 ground state. The Curie-Weiss contribution returns a Curie temperature that agrees with the onset of ferromagnetic hysteresis, and a conventional paramagnetic moment with an effective moment of 0.4 mu_B per Sm ion, in agreement with expectations for the crystal-field modified effective moment on the Sm3+ ions.
