We develop a percolation model motivated by recent experimental studies of gels with active network remodeling by molecular motors. This remodeling was found to lead to a critical state reminiscent of random percolation (RP), but with a cluster distribution inconsistent with RP. Our model not only can account for these experiments, but also exhibits an unusual type of mixed phase transition: We find that the transition is characterized by signatures of criticality, but with a discontinuity in the order parameter.

We use a two-level simulation method to analyse the critical point associated with demixing of binary hard sphere mixtures. The method exploits an accurate coarse-grained model with two-body and three-body effective interactions. Using this model wit hin the two-level methodology allows computation of properties of the full (fine-grained) mixture. The critical point is located by computing the probability distribution for the number of large particles in the grand canonical ensemble, and matching to the universal form for the $3d$ Ising universality class. The results have a strong and unexpected dependence on the size ratio between large and small particles, which is related to three-body effective interactions, and the geometry of the underlying hard sphere packings.

We introduce and solve a model of hardcore particles on a one dimensional periodic lattice which undergoes an active-absorbing state phase transition at finite density. In this model an occupied site is defined to be active if its left neighbour is o ccupied and the right neighbour is vacant. Particles from such active sites hop stochastically to their right. We show that, both the density of active sites and the survival probability vanish as the particle density is decreased below half. The critical exponents and spatial correlations of the model are calculated exactly using the matrix product ansatz. Exact analytical study of several variations of the model reveals that these non-equilibrium phase transitions belong to a new universality class different from the generic active-absorbing-state phase transition, namely directed percolation.
Anomalous diffusion, manifest as a nonlinear temporal evolution of the position mean square displacement, and/or non-Gaussian features of the position statistics, is prevalent in biological transport processes. Likewise, collective behavior is often observed to emerge spontaneously from the mutual interactions between constituent motile units in biological systems. Examples where these phenomena can be observed simultaneously have been identified in recent experiments on bird flocks, fish schools and bacterial swarms. These results pose an intriguing question, which cannot be resolved by existing theories of active matter: How is the collective motion of these systems affected by the anomalous diffusion of the constituent units? Here, we answer this question for a microscopic model of active Levy matter -- a collection of active particles that perform superdiffusion akin to a Levy flight and interact by promoting polar alignment of their orientations. We present in details the derivation of the hydrodynamic equations of motion of the model, obtain from these equations the criteria for a disordered or ordered state, and apply linear stability analysis on these states at the onset of collective motion. Our analysis reveals that the disorder-order phase transition in active Levy matter is critical, in contrast to ordinary active fluids where the phase transition is, instead, first-order. Correspondingly, we estimate the critical exponents of the transition by finite size scaling analysis and use these numerical estimates to relate our findings to known universality classes. These results highlight the novel physics exhibited by active matter integrating both anomalous diffusive single-particle motility and inter-particle interactions.

The orientation fluctuations of the director of a liquid crystal are measured, by a sensitive polarization interferometer, close to the Freedericksz transition, which is a second order transition driven by an electric field. We show that near the cri tical value of the field the spatially averaged order parameter has a generalized Gumbel distribution instead of a Gaussian one. The latter is recovered away from the critical point. The relevance of slow modes is pointed out. The parameter of generalized Gumbel is related to the effective number of degrees of freedom.
