Quantum entanglement offers the possibility of making measurements beyond the classical limit, however some issues still need to be overcome before it can be applied in realistic lossy systems. Recent work has used the quantum Fisher information (QFI) to show that entangled coherent states (ECSs) may be useful for this purpose as they combine sub-classical phase precision capabilities with robustness (Joo et al., 2011). However, to date no effective scheme for measuring a phase in lossy systems using an ECS has been devised. Here we present a scheme that does just this. We show how one could measure a phase to a precision significantly better than that attainable by both unentangled classical states and highly-entangled NOON states over a wide range of different losses. This brings quantum metrology closer to being a realistic and practical technology.

We show how entangled qubits can be encoded as entangled coherent states of two-dimensional centre-of-mass vibrational motion for two ions in an ion trap. The entangled qubit state is equivalent to the canonical Bell state, and we introduce a proposa l for entanglement transfer from the two vibrational modes to the electronic states of the two ions in order for the Bell state to be detected by resonance fluorescence shelving methods.

Quantum processes involving single-photon states are of broad interest in particular for quantum communication. Extending to continuous values a recent proposal by Yuan et al cite{YUAN16}, we show that single-photon quantum processes can be character ized using phase randomized coherent states (PRCS) as inputs. As a proof of principle, we present the experimental investigation of single-photon tomography using PRCS. The probability distribution of field quadratures measurements for single-photon states can be accurately derived from the PRCS data. As a consequence, the Wigner function and the density matrix of single-photon states are reconstructed with good precision. The sensitivity of the reconstruction to experimental errors and the number of PRCS used is addressed.
Maximally entangled photon pairs with a spatial degree of freedom is a potential way for realizing high-capacity quantum computing and communication. However, methods to generate such entangled states with high quality, high brightness, and good cont rollability are needed. Here, a scheme is experimentally demonstrated that generates spatially maximally entangled photon pairs with an orbital angular momentum degree of freedom via spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. Compared with existing methods using post-selection, the technique can directly modulate the spatial spectrum of down-converted photon pairs by engineering the input pump beam. In addition, the relative phase between spatially entangled photon pairs can be easily manipulated by preparing the relative phase of input pump states.
We study the effect of the exciton fine-structure splitting on the polarisation-entanglement of photon pairs produced by the biexciton cascade in a single quantum dot. The entanglement is found to persist despite separations between the intermediate energy levels of up to 4 micro-eV. Measurements demonstrate that entanglement of the photon pair is robust to the dephasing of the intermediate exciton state responsible for the first order coherence time of either single photon. We present a theoretical framework taking into account the effects of spin-scattering, background light and dephasing. We distinguish between the first-order coherence time, and a parameter which we measure for the first time and define as the cross-coherence time.

We propose a deterministic remote state preparation (RSP) scheme for preparing an arbitrary (including pure and mixed) qubit, where a partially entangled state and finite classical communication are used. To our knowledge, our scheme is the first RSP scheme that fits into this category. One other RSP scheme proposed by Berry shares close features, but can only be used to prepare an arbitrary pure qubit. Even so, our scheme saves classical communication by approximate 1 bit per prepared qubit under equal conditions. When using a maximally entangled state, the classical communication for our scheme is 2 bits, which agrees with Los conjecture on the resource cost. Furthermore Alice can switch between our RSP scheme and a standard teleportation scheme without letting Bob know, which makes the quantum channel multipurpose.
