Nonlocality is arguably one of the most fundamental and counterintuitive aspects of quantum theory. Nonlocal correlations could, however, be even more nonlocal than quantum theory allows, while still complying with basic physical principles such as no-signaling. So why is quantum mechanics not as nonlocal as it could be? Are there other physical or information-theoretic principles which prohibit this? So far, the proposed answers to this question have been only partially successful, partly because they are lacking genuinely multipartite formulations. In Nat. Comm. 4, 2263 (2013) we introduced the principle of Local Orthogonality (LO), an intrinsically multipartite principle which is satisfied by quantum mechanics but is violated by non-physical correlations. Here we further explore the LO principle, presenting new results and explaining some of its subtleties. In particular, we show that the set of no-signaling boxes satisfying LO is closed under wirings, present a classification of all LO inequalities in certain scenarios, show that all extremal tripartite boxes with two binary measurements per party violate LO, and explain the connection between LO inequalities and unextendible product bases.

In recent years, the use of information principles to understand quantum correlations has been very successful. Unfortunately, all principles considered so far have a bipartite formulation, but intrinsically multipartite principles, yet to be discove red, are necessary for reproducing quantum correlations. Here, we introduce local orthogonality, an intrinsically multipartite principle stating that events involving different outcomes of the same local measurement must be exclusive, or orthogonal. We prove that it is equivalent to no-signaling in the bipartite scenario but more restrictive for more than two parties. By exploiting this non-equivalence, it is then demonstrated that some bipartite supra-quantum correlations do violate local orthogonality when distributed among several parties. Finally, we show how its multipartite character allows revealing the non-quantumness of correlations for which any bipartite principle fails. We believe that local orthogonality is a crucial ingredient for understanding no-signaling and quantum correlations.

Lorentz symmetry violation (LV) was recently proposed to be testable with a new method, in which the effect of the violation is described as a certain local interaction [R. Shaniv, et al, PRL 120, 103202 (2018)]. We revisit this LV effect in the pape r and show that it is not only local, but it also represents a classical violation according to the recent quantum formulation of the Einstein equivalence principle (EEP). Based on a harmonically trapped spin-1/2 atomic system, we apply the results of table-top experiments testing LV effect to estimate the corresponding violation parameter in the quantum formulation of EEP. We find that the violation parameter is indeed very small, as expected by the earlier theoretical estimation.
We discuss chromatic constructions on orthogonality hypergraphs which are classical set representable or have a faithful orthogonal representation. The latter ones have a quantum mechanical realization in terms of intertwined contexts or maximal obse rvables. Structure reconstruction of these hypergraphs from their table of two-valued states is possible for a class of hypergraphs, namely perfectly separable hypergraphs. Some examples from exempt categories that either cannot be reconstructed by two-valued states or whose set of two-valued states does not yield a coloring are presented.
Orthogonality of two-photon polarization states belonging to a single frequency and spatial mode is demonstrated experimentally, in a generalization of the well-known anti-correlation dip experiment.

It was recently proposed to encode the one-sided exponential source X via K parallel channels, Y1, ..., YK , such that the error signals X - Yi, i = 1,...,K, are one-sided exponential and mutually independent given X. Moreover, it was shown that the optimal estimator hat{Y} of the source X with respect to the one-sided error criterion, is simply given by the maximum of the outputs, i.e., hat{Y} = max{Y1,..., YK}. In this paper, we show that the distribution of the resulting estimation error X - hat{Y} , is equivalent to that of the optimum noise in the backward test-channel of the one-sided exponential source, i.e., it is one-sided exponentially distributed and statistically independent of the joint output Y1,...,YK.
