Using lattice simulations, we study the infrared behavior of a particularly interesting SU(2) gauge theory, with six massless Dirac fermions in the fundamental representation. We compute the running gauge coupling derived non-perturbatively from the Schrodinger functional of the theory, finding no evidence for an infrared fixed point up through gauge couplings of order 20. This implies that the theory either is governed in the infrared by a fixed point of considerable strength, unseen so far in non-supersymmetric gauge theories, or breaks its global chiral symmetries producing a large number of composite Nambu-Goldstone bosons relative to the number of underlying degrees of freedom. Thus either of these phases exhibits novel behavior.

We compute the Green function of the massless scalar field theory in the infrared till the next-to-leading order, providing a fully covariant strong coupling expansion. Applying Callan-Symanzik equation we obtain the exact running coupling for this c ase by computing the beta function. This result is applied using a recently proved mapping theorem between a massless scalar field theory and Yang-Mills theory. This beta function gives a running coupling going to zero as $p^4$ in agreement with lattice results presented in Boucaud et al. [JHEP 0304 (2003) 005] and showing that the right definition of the running coupling for a Yang-Mills theory in the infrared is given in a MOM scheme. The emerging scenario is supporting a quantum field theory based on instantons.

We use gauge/gravity duality to study the thermodynamics of a field theory with asymptotic freedom in the ultraviolet and a fixed point in the infrared. We find a high temperature quark-gluon phase and a low T conformal unparticle phase. The phase tr ansition between the phases is of first order or continuous, depending on the ratio of the radii of asymptotic AdS5 spaces at T=0 and T=infinity. This is a prediction from a model of gauge/gravity duality, not yet verified on the field theory side.
We propose a novel gauge-invariant regularization for the perturbative chiral gauge theory. Our method consists of the two ingredients: use of the domain-wall fermion to describe a chiral fermion with Pauli-Villars regulators and application of the di - mensional regularization only to the gauge field. This regularization is implemented in the Lagrangian level, unlike other gauge-invariant regularizations (eg. the covariant regularizations). We show that the Abelian (fermion number) anomaly is reproduced correctly in this formulation. We also show that once we add the counter terms to the full theory, then the renormalization in the chiral gauge theory is automatically achieved.
We revisit two-color, two-flavor chiral perturbation theory at finite isospin and baryon density. We investigate the phase diagram obtained varying the isospin and the baryon chemical potentials, focusing on the phase transition occurring when the tw o chemical potentials are equal and exceed the pion mass (which is degenerate with the diquark mass). In this case, there is a change in the order parameter of the theory that does not lend itself to the standard picture of first order transitions. We explore this phase transition both within a Ginzburg-Landau framework valid in a limited parameter space and then by inspecting the full chiral Lagrangian in all the accessible parameter space. Across the phase transition between the two broken phases the order parameter becomes an $SU(2)$ doublet, with the ground state fixing the expectation value of the sum of the magnitude squared of the pion and the diquark fields. Furthermore, we find that the Lagrangian at equal chemical potentials is invariant under global $SU(2)$ transformations and construct the effective Lagrangian of the three Goldstone degrees of freedom by integrating out the radial fluctuations.
The question of the exact nature of the phase transition in two-flavor QCD is still under discussion. Recent results for small quark masses in simulations with 2+1 flavors show scaling behavior consistent with the O(4) or O(2) universality class. For a precise determination, an assessment of deviations from the ideal scaling behavior due to finite quark masses and finite simulation volumes is necessary. We study the scaling behavior at the chiral phase transition with an effective quark-meson model. In our Renormalization Group approach, the quark masses in the model can be varied from the chiral limit over a wide range of values, which allows us to estimate scaling deviations due to large quark masses and the extent of the scaling region. We conclude that scaling deviations are already large at pion masses of 75 MeV, but that the effect is difficult to see in the absence of results for even smaller masses. Comparing results only in a narrow window of pion masses leads to the observation of apparent scaling behavior. While the scaling deviations are not necessarily universal, we expect that this may affect current lattice simulation results. By placing the system in a finite box, we investigate the transition between infinite-volume scaling behavior and finite-size scaling. We estimate that finite-size scaling behavior can be tested in regions where pion mass times box size is approximately 2 - 3, which is smaller than in most current lattice simulations. We expect that finite-volume effects are small for pion masses of 75 MeV and lattice aspect ratios with TL > 8, but that they will become significant when pion masses in lattice simulations become smaller.
