The cross sections for the formation of five residual radionuclides (72Se, 97Zr, 112Pd, 125Sb, and 147Nb) from 40- to 200-MeV proton irradiation of thorium have been measured and are reported. The atomic masses of these fragments span the expected mass distribution of radionuclides formed by fission of the target nucleus. Especially in mass regions corresponding to transitions between different relaxation mechanisms employed by available models, these data are expected to be useful to the improvement of high-energy transport codes. The predictions of the event generators incorporated into the latest release of the Monte Carlo N-Particle code (MCNP6) are compared with data measured in this work in the hope that these results may be useful to the continued process of code verification and validation in MCNP6.

The total cross sections for pionic charge exchange on hydrogen were measured using a transmission technique on thin CH2 and C targets. Data were taken for pi- lab energies from 39 to 247 MeV with total errors of typically 2% over the Delta-resonance and up to 10% at the lowest energies. Deviations from the predictions of the SAID phase shift analysis in the 60 to 80 MeV region are interpreted as evidence for isospin-symmetry breaking in the s-wave amplitudes. The charge dependence of the Delta-resonance properties appears to be smaller than previously reported.
$^{72}$As is a promising positron emitter for diagnostic imaging that can be employed locally using a $^{72}$Se generator. However, current reaction pathways to $^{72}$Se have insufficient nuclear data for efficient production using regional 100-200 MeV high-intensity proton accelerators. In order to address this deficiency, stacked-target irradiations were performed at LBNL, LANL, and BNL to measure the production of the $^{72}$Se/$^{72}$As PET generator system via $^{75}$As(p,x) between 35 and 200 MeV. This work provides the most well-characterized excitation function for $^{75}$As(p,4n)$^{72}$Se starting from threshold. Additional focus was given to report the first measurements of $^{75}$As(p,x)$^{68}$Ge and bolster an already robust production capability for the highly valuable $^{68}$Ge/$^{68}$Ga PET generator. Thick target yield comparisons with prior established formation routes to both generators are made. In total, high-energy proton-induced cross sections are reported for 55 measured residual products from $^{75}$As, Cu, and Ti targets, where the latter two materials were present as monitor foils. These results were compared with literature data as well as the default theoretical calculations of the nuclear model codes TALYS, CoH, EMPIRE, and ALICE. Reaction modeling at these energies is typically unsatisfactory due to few prior published data and many interacting physics models. Therefore, a detailed assessment of the TALYS code was performed with simultaneous parameter adjustments applied according to a standardized procedure. Particular attention was paid to the formulation of the two-component exciton model in the transition between the compound and pre-equilibrium regions, with a linked investigation of level density models for nuclei off of stability and their impact on modeling predictive power.
We study how the excitation energy of the fully accelerated fission fragments is built up. It is stressed that only the intrinsic excitation energy available before scission can be exchanged between the fission fragments to achieve thermal equilibriu m. This is in contradiction with most models used to calculate prompt neutron emission where it is assumed that the total excitation energy of the final fragments is shared between the fragments by the condition of equal temperatures. We also study the intrinsic excitation-energy partition according to a level density description with a transition from a constant-temperature regime to a Fermi-gas regime. Complete or partial excitation-energy sorting is found at energies well above the transition energy.

The proton analyzing power in carbon has been measured for energies of 82 to 217 MeV and proton scattering angles of 5 to 41 degrees. The measurements were carried out using polarized protons from the elastic scattering H(pol. e, pol. p) reaction and the Focal Plane Polarimeter (FPP) in Hall A of Jefferson Lab. A new parameterization of the FPP p-C analyzing power was fit to the data, which is in good agreement with previous parameterizations and provides an extension to lower energies and larger angles. The main conclusions are that all polarimeters to date give consistent measurements of the carbon analyzing power, independently of the details of their construction and that measuring on a larger angular range significantly improves the polarimeter figure of merit at low energies.
In recent years, investigations of angular distributions of fragments in neutron-induced nuclear fission have been extended to intermediate energies, up to 200 MeV, as well as to a wide range of target isotopes. Using as an example the latest data ob tained by our group for the reaction 237-Np(n,f), we discuss the specific features of fission fragment angular distribution and present a method for their simulation based on the code TALYS. It is shown that a simplified model reasonably describes energy dependence of the angular distribution in the whole range 1-200 MeV. The ways to improve the model are discussed along with the possibilities to use it for obtaining new information on fission and pre-equilibrium processes in neutron-nucleus interaction. We consider also the relevant problems of describing fission fragment angular distributions.
