The use of the spin Hall effect and its inverse to electrically detect and manipulate dynamic spin currents generated via ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) driven spin pumping has enabled the investigation of these dynamically injected currents across a wide variety of ferromagnetic materials. However, while this approach has proven to be an invaluable diagnostic for exploring the spin pumping process it requires strong spin-orbit coupling, thus substantially limiting the materials basis available for the detector/channel material (primarily Pt, W and Ta). Here, we report FMR driven spin pumping into a weak spin-orbit channel through the measurement of a spin accumulation voltage in a Si-based metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) heterostructure. This alternate experimental approach enables the investigation of dynamic spin pumping in a broad class of materials with weak spin-orbit coupling and long spin lifetime while providing additional information regarding the phase evolution of the injected spin ensemble via Hanle-based measurements of the effective spin lifetime.

Ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) driven spin pumping is an emerging technique for injection of a pure spin current from a ferromagnet (FM) into a non-magnetic (NM) material without an accompanying charge current. It is widely believed that this pumping proceeds exclusively via a short-range exchange interaction at the FM/NM interface. Here we report robust, long-range spin pumping from the ferrimagnetic double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 (SFMO) into Pt across an insulating barrier up to 200 nm thick, and systematically rule out all known spurious effects. This result demonstrates dynamic spin injection over a distance far beyond the coupling range of the exchange interaction, exposing the need to consider other coupling mechanisms. The characteristic length scale for magnetic textures in Sr2FeMoO6 is approximately 150 nm, resulting from structural antiphase boundaries, thus raising the possibility that magnetic dipole coupling underlies the observed long range spin transfer. This discovery reveals a route to dynamic angular momentum transfer between a FM and a NM in the absence of mediation by itinerant electrons and promises new spin-functional devices employing long-range spin pumping.

We show that the accumulation of spin-polarized electrons at a forward-biased Schottky tunnel barrier between Fe and n-GaAs can be detected electrically. The spin accumulation leads to an additional voltage drop across the barrier that is suppressed by a small transverse magnetic field, which depolarizes the spins in the semiconductor. The dependence of the electrical accumulation signal on magnetic field, bias current, and temperature is in good agreement with the predictions of a drift-diffusion model for spin-polarized transport.
Large charge-to-spin conversion (spin Hall angle) and spin Hall conductivity are prerequisites for development of next generation power efficient spintronic devices. In this context, heavy metals (e.g. Pt, W etc.), topological insulators, antiferroma gnets are usually considered because they exhibit high spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In addition to the above materials, 5d transition metal oxide e.g. Iridium Oxide (IrO 2 ) is a potential candidate which exhibits high SOC strength. Here we report a study of spin pumping and inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE), via ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), in IrO 2 /CoFeB system. We identify the individual contribution of spin pumping and other spin rectification effects in the magnetic layer, by investigating the in-plane angular dependence of ISHE signal. Our analysis shows significant contribution of spin pumping effect to the ISHE signal. We show that polycrystalline IrO 2 thin film exhibits high spin Hall conductivity and spin Hall angle which are comparable to the values of Pt.

Due to the difficulty to grow high quality semiconductors on ferromagnetic metals, the study of spin diffusion transport in Si was only limited to lateral geometry devices. In this work, by using ultra-high vacuum wafer-bonding technique, we have suc cessfully fabricated metal semiconductor metal CoFeB/MgO/Si/Pt vertical structures. We hereby demonstrate pure spin-current injection and transport in the perpendicular current flow geometry over a distance larger than 2mu m in n-type Si at room temperature. In those experiments, a pure propagating spin-current is generated via ferromagnetic resonance spin-pumping and converted into a measurable voltage by using the inverse spin-Hall effect occurring in the top Pt layer. A systematic study by varying both Si and MgO thicknesses reveals the important role played by the localized states at the MgO/Si interface for the spin-current generation. Proximity effects involving indirect exchange interactions between the ferromagnet and the MgO/Si interface states appears to be a prerequisite to establish the necessary out-of-equilibrium spin-population in Si under the spin-pumping action.
Spin transport in electric conductors is largely determined by two material parameters - spin diffusion length and spin Hall angle. In metals, these are typically determined indirectly by probing magnetoresistance in magnet/metal heterostructures, as suming knowledge of the interfacial properties. We suggest profiling the charge current induced spin Hall spin accumulation in metals, via detection of the magnetic stray field generated by the associated static magnetization, as a direct means of determining spin transport parameters. We evaluate the spatial profile of the stray field as well as the Oersted field generated by the charge current. We thus demonstrate that such a charge current induced spin accumulation is well within the detection limit of contemporary technology. Measuring the stray fields may enable direct access to spin-related properties of metals paving the way for a better and consistent understanding of spin transport therein.
