Let k be a field with cohomological dimension less than 3; we call such fields low-dimensional. Examples include algebraically closed fields, finite fields and function fields thereof, local fields, and number fields with no real embeddings. We determine the 1-column of the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence over k. Combined with rational information we use this to compute the first stable motivic homotopy group of the sphere spectrum over k. Our main result affirms Morels pi_1-conjecture in the case of low-dimensional fields. We also determine stable motivic pi_1 in integer weights other than -2, -3, and -4.

Let F be a field of characteristic different than 2. We establish surjectivity of Balmers comparison map rho^* from the tensor triangular spectrum of the homotopy category of compact motivic spectra to the homogeneous Zariski spectrum of Milnor-Witt K-theory. We also comment on the tensor triangular geometry of compact cellular motivic spectra, producing in particular novel field spectra in this category. We conclude with a list of questions about the structure of the tensor triangular spectrum of the stable motivic homotopy category.

We give a method for computing the C_2-equivariant homotopy groups of the Betti realization of a p-complete cellular motivic spectrum over R in terms of its motivic homotopy groups. More generally, we show that Betti realization presents the C_2-equi variant p-complete stable homotopy category as a localization of the p-complete cellular real motivic stable homotopy category.
We survey computations of stable motivic homotopy groups over various fields. The main tools are the motivic Adams spectral sequence, the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the effective slice spectral sequence. We state some projects for future study.
We compute some R-motivic stable homotopy groups. For $s - w leq 11$, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups $pi_{s,w}$ of a completion of the R-motivic sphere spectrum. We apply the $rho$-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain R-motivic Ext g roups from the C-motivic Ext groups, which are well-understood in a large range. These Ext groups are the input to the R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. We fully analyze the Adams differentials in a range, and we also analyze hidden extensions by $rho$, 2, and $eta$. As a consequence of our computations, we recover Mahowald invariants of many low-dimensional classical stable homotopy elements.
Fix the base field Q of rational numbers and let BP<n> denote the family of motivic truncated Brown-Peterson spectra over Q. We employ a local-to-global philosophy in order to compute the motivic Adams spectral sequence converging to the bi-graded ho motopy groups of BP<n>. Along the way, we provide a new computation of the homotopy groups of BP<n> over the 2-adic rationals, prove a motivic Hasse principle for the spectra BP<n>, and deduce several classical and recent theorems about the K-theory of particular fields.
