Using path-integral methods, a formula is deduced for the noise-induced escape rate from an attracting fixed point across an unstable fixed point in one-dimensional maps. The calculation starts from the trace formula for the eigenvalues of the Frobenius-Perron operator ruling the time evolution of the probability density in noisy maps. The escape rate is determined from the loop formed by two heteroclinic orbits connecting back and forth the two fixed points of the one-dimensional map extended to a two-dimensional symplectic map. The escape rate is obtained with the expression of the prefactor to Arrhenius-vant Hoff exponential factor.

The rate of metastable decay in nonequilibrium systems is expected to display scaling behavior: i.e., the logarithm of the decay rate should scale as a power of the distance to a bifurcation point where the metastable state disappears. Recently such behavior was observed and some of the earlier predicted exponents were found in experiments on several types of systems described by a model of a modulated oscillator. Here we establish the range where different scaling behavior is displayed and show how the crossover between different types of scaling occurs. The analysis is done for a nonlinear oscillator with two coexisting stable states of forced vibrations. Our numerical calculations, based on the the instanton method allow the mapping of the entire parameter range of bi-stability. We find the regions where the scaling exponents are 1 or 3/2, depending on the damping. The exponent 3/2 is found to extend much further from the bifurcation then were it would be expected to hold as a result of an over-damped soft mode. We also uncover a new scaling behavior with exponent of $approx$ 1.3 which extends, numerically, beyond the close vicinity of the bifurcation point.

The time needed for a particle to exit a confining domain through a small window, called the narrow escape time (NET), is a limiting factor of various processes, such as some biochemical reactions in cells. Obtaining an estimate of the mean NET for a given geometric environment is therefore a requisite step to quantify the reaction rate constant of such processes, which has raised a growing interest in the last few years. In this Letter, we determine explicitly the scaling dependence of the mean NET on both the volume of the confining domain and the starting point to aperture distance. We show that this analytical approach is applicable to a very wide range of stochastic processes, including anomalous diffusion or diffusion in the presence of an external force field, which cover situations of biological relevance.

We stabilize the full Arthur-Selberg trace formula for the metaplectic covering of symplectic groups over a number field. This provides a decomposition of the invariant trace formula for metaplectic groups, which encodes information about the genuine $L^2$-automorphic spectrum, into a linear combination of stable trace formulas of products of split odd orthogonal groups via endoscopic transfer. By adapting the strategies of Arthur and Moeglin-Waldspurger from the linear case, the proof is built on a long induction process that mixes up local and global, geometric and spectral data. As a by-product, we also stabilize the local trace formula for metaplectic groups over any local field of characteristic zero.

We analyze the influence of classical Gaussian noise on Landau-Zener transitions during a two-level crossing in a time-dependent regular external field. Transition probabilities and coherence factors become random due to the noise. We calculate their two-time correlation functions, which describe the response of this two-level system to a weak external pulse signal. The spectrum and intensity of the magnetic response are derived. Although fluctuations are of the same order of magnitude as averages, the results is obtained in an analytic form.
We study diffusion-controlled single-species annihilation with a finite number of particles. In this reaction-diffusion process, each particle undergoes ordinary diffusion, and when two particles meet, they annihilate. We focus on spatial dimensions $d>2$ where a finite number of particles typically survive the annihilation process. Using the rate equation approach and scaling techniques we investigate the average number of surviving particles, $M$, as a function of the initial number of particles, $N$. In three dimensions, for instance, we find the scaling law $Msim N^{1/3}$ in the asymptotic regime $Ngg 1$. We show that two time scales govern the reaction kinetics: the diffusion time scale, $Tsim N^{2/3}$, and the escape time scale, $tausim N^{4/3}$. The vast majority of annihilation events occur on the diffusion time scale, while no annihilation events occur beyond the escape time scale.
