We report new p$(vec{e},e^prime p)pi^circ$ measurements in the $Delta^{+}(1232)$ resonance at the low momentum transfer region utilizing the magnetic spectrometers of the A1 Collaboration at MAMI. The mesonic cloud dynamics are predicted to be dominant and appreciably changing in this region while the momentum transfer is sufficiently low to be able to test chiral effective calculations. The results disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasonable agreement with dynamical calculations with pion cloud effects, chiral effective field theory and lattice calculations. The reported measurements suggest that improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements.

The reaction $gamma p to pi^circ gamma^prime p$ has been measured with the TAPS calorimeter at the Mainz Microtron accelerator facility MAMI for energies between $sqrt{s}$ = 1221--1331 MeV. Cross sections differential in angle and energy have been de termined for all particles in the final state in three bins of the excitation energy. This reaction channel provides access to the magnetic dipole moment of the $Delta^{+}(1232)$ resonance and, for the first time, a value of $mu_{Delta^+} = (2.7_{-1.3}^{+1.0}(stat.) pm 1.5 (syst.) pm 3(theo.)) mu_N$ has been extracted.

The determination of non-spherical angular momentum amplitudes in nucleons at long ranges (low Q^{2}), was accomplished through the $p(vec{e},ep)pi^0$ reaction in the Delta region at $Q^2=0.060$, 0.127, and 0.200 (GeV/c)^2 at the Mainz Microtron (MAM I) with an accuracy of 3%. The results for the dominant transition magnetic dipole amplitude and the quadrupole to dipole ratios have been obtained with an estimated model uncertainty which is approximately the same as the experimental uncertainty. Lattice and effective field theory predictions agree with our data within the relatively large estimated theoretical uncertainties. Phenomenological models are in good agreement with experiment when the resonant amplitudes are adjusted to the data. To check reaction model calculations additional data were taken for center of mass energies below resonance and for the $sigma_{TL}$ structure function. These results confirm the dominance, and general Q^2 variation, of the pionic contribution at large distances.
We report on new p$(e,e^prime p)pi^circ$ measurements at the $Delta^{+}(1232)$ resonance at the low momentum transfer region. The mesonic cloud dynamics is predicted to be dominant and rapidly changing in this kinematic region offering a test bed for chiral effective field theory calculations. The new data explore the low $Q^2$ dependence of the resonant quadrupole amplitudes while extending the measurements of the Coulomb quadrupole amplitude to the lowest momentum transfer ever reached. The results disagree with predictions of constituent quark models and are in reasonable agreement with dynamical calculations that include pion cloud effects, chiral effective field theory and lattice calculations. The reported measurements suggest that improvement is required to the theoretical calculations and provide valuable input that will allow their refinements.
The recoil proton polarization has been measured in the p (vec e,evec p) pi^0 reaction in parallel kinematics around W = 1232 MeV, Q^2 = 0.121 (GeV/c)^2 and epsilon = 0.718 using the polarized c.w. electron beam of the Mainz Microtron. Due to the spi n precession in a magnetic spectrometer, all three proton polarization components P_x/P_e = (-11.4 pm 1.3 pm 1.4) %, P_y = (-43.1 pm 1.3 pm 2.2) %, and P_z/P_e = (56.2 pm 1.5 pm 2.6) % could be measured simultaneously. The Coulomb quadrupole to magnetic dipole ratio CMR = (-6.4pm 0.7_{stat}pm 0.8_{syst}) % was determined from P_x in the framework of the Mainz Unitary Isobar Model. The consistency among the reduced polarizations and the extraction of the ratio of longitudinal to transverse response is discussed.

The mean square polarizability radii of the proton have been measured for the first time in a virtual Compton scattering experiment performed at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. Response functions and polarizabilities obtained from a d ispersion analysis of the data at Q2=0.06 GeV2/c2 are in agreement with O(p3) heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The data support the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities, and the increase of beta with increasing Q2 is evidence for the cancellation of long-range diamagnetism by short-range paramagnetism from the pion cloud.
