Using a first-principles Greens function approach we study magnetic properties of the magnetic binary chalcogenides Bi2Te3, Bi2Se3, and Sb2Te3. The magnetic coupling between transition-metal impurities is long-range, extends beyond a quintuple layer, and decreases with increasing number of d electrons per 3d atom. We find two main mechanisms for the magnetic interaction in these materials: the indirect exchange interaction mediated by free carriers and the indirect interaction between magnetic moments via chalcogen atoms. The calculated Curie temperatures of these systems are in good agreement with available experimental data. Our results provide deep insight into magnetic interactions in magnetic binary chalcogenides and open a way to design new materials for promising applications.

Multiferroics, where two or more ferroic order parameters coexist, is one of the hottest fields in condensed matter physics and materials science[1-9]. However, the coexistence of magnetism and conventional ferroelectricity is physically unfavoured[1 0]. Recently several remedies have been proposed, e.g., improper ferroelectricity induced by specific magnetic[6] or charge orders[2]. Guiding by these theories, currently most research is focused on frustrated magnets, which usually have complicated magnetic structure and low magnetic ordering temperature, consequently far from the practical application. Simple collinear magnets, which can have high magnetic transition temperature, have never been considered seriously as the candidates for multiferroics. Here, we argue that actually simple interatomic magnetic exchange interaction already contains a driving force for ferroelectricity, thus providing a new microscopic mechanism for the coexistence and strong coupling between ferroelectricity and magnetism. We demonstrate this mechanism by showing that even the simplest antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator MnO, can display a magnetically induced ferroelectricity under a biaxial strain.
We report a study of magnetic dynamics in multiferroic hexagonal manganite HoMnO3 by far-infrared spectroscopy. Low-temperature magnetic excitation spectrum of HoMnO3 consists of magnetic-dipole transitions of Ho ions within the crystal-field split J =8 manifold and of the triangular antiferromagnetic resonance of Mn ions. We determine the effective spin Hamiltonian for the Ho ion ground state. The magnetic-field splitting of the Mn antiferromagnetic resonance allows us to measure the magnetic exchange coupling between the rare-earth and Mn ions.
Transition metal perovskite chalcogenides (TMPC) are a new class of semiconductor materials with broad tunability of physical properties due to their chemical and structural flexibility. Theoretical calculations show that band gaps of TMPCs are tunab le from Far IR to UV spectrum. Amongst these materials, more than a handful of materials have energy gap and very high absorption coefficients, which are appropriate for optoelectronic applications, especially solar energy conversion. Despite several promising theoretical predictions, very little experimental studies on their physical properties are currently available, especially optical properties. We report a new synthetic route towards high quality bulk ceramic TMPCs and systematic study of three phases, SrZrS3 in two different room temperature stabilized phases and one of BaZrS3. All three materials were synthesized with a catalyzed solid-state reaction process in sealed ampoules. Structural and chemical characterizations establish high quality of the samples, which is confirmed by the intense room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra showing direct band gaps around 1.53eV, 2.13eV and 1.81eV respectively. The potential of these materials for solar energy conversion was evaluated by measurement of PL quantum efficiency and estimate of quasi Fermi level splitting.
The high-throughput (HT) computational method is a useful tool to screen high performance functional materials. In this work, using the deformation potential method under the single band model, we evaluate the carrier relaxation time and establish an electrical descriptor (c{hi}) characterized by the carrier effective masses based on the simple rigid band approximation. The descriptor (c{hi}) can be used to reasonably represent the maximum power factor without solving the electron Boltzmann transport equation. Additionally, the Gruneisen parameter ({gamma}), a descriptor of the lattice anharmonicity and lattice thermal conductivity, is efficiently evaluated using the elastic properties, omitting the costly phonon calculations. Applying two descriptors (c{hi} and {gamma}) to binary chalcogenides, we HT compute 243 semiconductors and screen 50 promising thermoelectric materials. For these theoretically determined compounds, we successfully predict some previously experimentally and theoretically investigated promising thermoelectric materials. Additionally, 9 p-type and 14 n-type previously unreported binary chalcogenides are also predicted as promising thermoelectric materials. Our work provides not only new thermoelectric candidates with perfect crystalline structure for the future investigations, but also reliable descriptors to HT screen high performance thermoelectric materials.

We report the complex magnetic phase diagram and electronic structure of Cr2(Te1-xWx)O6 systems. While compounds with different x values possess the same crystal structure, they display different magnetic structures below and above xc = 0.7, where bo th the transition temperature TN and sublattice magnetization (Ms) reach a minimum. Unlike many known cases where magnetic interactions are controlled either by injection of charge carriers or by structural distortion induced via chemical doping, in the present case it is achieved by tuning the orbital hybridization between Cr 3d and O 2p orbitals through W 5d states. The result is supported by ab-initio electronic structure calculations. Through this concept, we introduce a new approach to tune magnetic and electronic properties via chemical doping.
