Finesse is a fast interferometer simulation program. For a given optical setup, it computes the light field amplitudes at every point in the interferometer assuming a steady state. To do so, the interferometer description is translated into a set of linear equations that are solved numerically. For convenience, a number of standard analyses can be performed automatically by the program, namely computing modulation-demodulation error signals, transfer functions, shot-noise-limited sensitivities, and beam shapes. Finesse can perform the analysis using the plane-wave approximation or Hermite-Gauss modes. The latter allows computation of the properties of optical systems like telescopes and the effects of mode matching and mirror angular positions.

FINESSE is a software simulation that allows to compute the optical properties of laser interferometers as they are used by the interferometric gravitational-wave detectors today. It provides a fast and versatile tool which has proven to be very usef ul during the design and the commissioning of gravitational-wave detectors. The basic algorithm of FINESSE numerically computes the light amplitudes inside an interferometer using Hermite-Gauss modes in the frequency domain. In addition, FINESSE provides a number of commands to easily generate and plot the most common signals like, for example, power enhancement, error or control signals, transfer functions and shot-noise-limited sensitivities. Among the various simulation tools available to the gravitational wave community today, FINESSE is the most advanced general optical simulation that uses the frequency domain. It has been designed to allow general analysis of user defined optical setups while being easy to install and easy to use.
A modular, maintainable and extensible particle beam simulation architecture is presented. Design considerations for single particle, multi particle, and rms envelope simulations (in two and three dimensions) are outlined. Envelope simulation results have been validated against Trace3D. Hybridization with a physics-centric contol-system abstraction provides a convenient environment for rapid deployment of applications employing model-reference control strategies.
We propose a method for tailoring the frequency spectrum of bright squeezed vacuum by generating it in a nonlinear interferometer, consisting of two down-converting nonlinear crystals separated by a dispersive medium. Due to a faster dispersive sprea ding of higher-order Schmidt modes, the spectral width of the radiation at the output is reduced as the length of the dispersive medium is increased. Preliminary results show 30% spectral narrowing.
CELES is a freely available MATLAB toolbox to simulate light scattering by many spherical particles. Aiming at high computational performance, CELES leverages block-diagonal preconditioning, a lookup-table approach to evaluate costly functions and ma ssively parallel execution on NVIDIA graphics processing units using the CUDA computing platform. The combination of these techniques allows to efficiently address large electrodynamic problems ($>10^4$ scatterers) on inexpensive consumer hardware. In this paper, we validate near- and far-field distributions against the well-established multi-sphere $T$-matrix (MSTM) code and discuss the convergence behavior for ensembles of different sizes, including an exemplary system comprising $10^5$ particles.
Optical microcavities allow to strongly confine light in small mode volumes and with long photon lifetimes. This confinement significantly enhances the interaction between light and matter inside the cavity, with applications such as optical trapping and cooling of nanoparticles, single-photon emission enhancement, quantum information processing, and sensing. For many applications, open resonators with direct access to the mode volume are necessary. Here we report on a scalable, open-access optical microcavity platform with mode volumes < 30 $lambda^3$ and finesse approaching $5x10^5$. This result significantly exceeds the highest optical enhancement factors achieved to date for Fabry-Perot cavities. The platform provides a building block for high-performance quantum devices relying on strong light-matter interaction.
