Theories that support dynamical generation of a fermion mass gap are of widespread interest. The phenomenon is often studied via the Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) for the fermion self energy; i.e., the gap equation. When the rainbow truncation of that equation supports dynamical mass generation, it typically also possesses a countable infinity of simultaneous solutions for the dressed-fermion mass function, solutions which may be ordered by the number of zeros they exhibit. These features can be understood via the theory of nonlinear Hammerstein integral equations. Using QED3 as an example, we demonstrate the existence of a large class of gap equation truncations that possess solutions with damped oscillations. We suggest that there is a larger class, quite probably including the exact theory, which does not. The structure of the dressed-fermion--gauge-boson vertex is an important factor in deciding the issue.

In a recent preprint [cond-mat/0204040] Khveshchenko questioned the validity of our computation of the gauge invariant fermion propagator in QED3, which we employed as an effective theory of high-T_c cuprate superconductors [cond-mat/0203333]. We tak e this opportunity to further clarify our procedure and to show that criticism voiced in the above preprint is unwarranted.

The application of the nonperturbative renormalisation group approach to a system with two fermion species is studied. Assuming a simple ansatz for the effective action with effective bosons, describing pairing effects we derive a set of approximate flow equations for the effective coupling including boson and fermionic fluctuations. The case of two fermions with different masses but coinciding Fermi surfaces is considered. The phase transition to a phase with broken symmetry is found at a critical value of the running scale. The large mass difference is found to disfavour the formation of pairs. The mean-field results are recovered if the effects of boson loops are omitted. While the boson fluctuation effects were found to be negligible for large values of $p_{F} a$ they become increasingly important with decreasing $p_{F} a$ thus making the mean field description less accurate.
We study the gauge covariance of the fermion propagator in Maxwell-Chern-Simons planar quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) considering four-component spinors with parity-even and parity-odd mass terms both for fermions and photons. Starting with its tr ee level expression in the Landau gauge, we derive a non perturbative expression for this propagator in an arbitrary covariant gauge by means of its Landau-Khalatnikov-Fradkin transformation (LKFT). We compare our findings in the weak coupling regime with the direct one-loop calculation of the two-point Green function and observe perfect agreement up to a gauge independent term. We also reproduce results derived in earlier works as special cases of our findings.
With the introduction of a spectral representation, the Schwinger-Dyson equation (SDE) for the fermion propagator is formulated in Minkowski space in QED. After imposing the on-shell renormalization conditions, analytic solutions for the fermion prop agator spectral functions are obtained in four dimensions with a renormalizable version of the Gauge Technique anzatz for the fermion-photon vertex in the quenched approximation in the Landau gauge. Despite the limitations of this model, having an explicit solution provides a guiding example of the fermion propagator with the correct analytic structure. The Pad{e} approximation for the spectral functions is also investigated.

We study dynamical symmetry breaking in three-dimensional QED with a Chern-Simons (CS) term, considering the screening effect of $N$ flavor fermions. We find a new phase of the vacuum, in which both the fermion mass and a magnetic field are dynamical ly generated, when the coefficient of the CS term $kappa$ equals $N e^2/4 pi$. The resultant vacuum becomes the finite-density state half-filled by fermions. For $kappa=N e^2/2 pi$, we find the fermion remains massless and only the magnetic field is induced. For $kappa=0$, spontaneous magnetization does not occur and should be regarded as an external field.
