The SuperCDMS experiment in the Soudan Underground Laboratory searches for dark matter with a 9-kg array of cryogenic germanium detectors. Symmetric sensors on opposite sides measure both charge and phonons from each particle interaction, providing excellent discrimination between electron and nuclear recoils, and between surface and interior events. Surface event rejection capabilities were tested with two $^{210}$Pb sources producing $sim$130 beta decays/hr. Sensitivities of current directional dark matter search detectors using gas time projection chambers are now constrained by target mass. A ton-scale gas TPC detector will require large charge readout areas. We present a first demonstration of a novel ThGEM-Multiwire hybrid charge readout technology which combines the robust nature and high gas gain of Thick Gaseous Electron Multipliers with lower capacitive noise of a one-plane multiwire charge readout in SF$_6$ target gas. Measurements performed with this hybrid detector show an ion drift velocity of $139~pm~12~text{ms}^{-1}$ in a reduced drift field $text{E/N}$ of $93~text{Td}~(10^{-17}~text{V cm}^{2})$ at a gas gain of $2470pm160$ in 20 Torr of pure SF$_text{6}$ target gas.

Germanium detectors with sub-keV sensitivities open a window to search for low-mass WIMP dark matter. The CDEX-TEXONO Collaboration is conducting the first research program at the new China Jinping Underground Laboratory with this approach. The statu s and plans of the laboratory and the experiment are discussed.
The CDEX Collaboration has been established for direct detection of light dark matter particles, using ultra-low energy threshold p-type point-contact germanium detectors, in China JinPing underground Laboratory (CJPL). The first 1 kg point-contact g ermanium detector with a sub-keV energy threshold has been tested in a passive shielding system located in CJPL. The outputs from both the point-contact p+ electrode and the outside n+ electrode make it possible to scan the lower energy range of less than 1 keV and at the same time to detect the higher energy range up to 3 MeV. The outputs from both p+ and n+ electrode may also provide a more powerful method for signal discrimination for dark matter experiment. Some key parameters, including energy resolution, dead time, decay times of internal X-rays, and system stability, have been tested and measured. The results show that the 1 kg point-contact germanium detector, together with its shielding system and electronics, can run smoothly with good performances. This detector system will be deployed for dark matter search experiments.

Germanium (Ge) detectors with ability of measuring a single electron-hole (e-h) pair are needed in searching for light dark matter (LDM) down to the MeV scale. We investigate the feasibility of Ge detectors with amorphous-Ge (a-Ge) contacts to achiev e the sensitivity of measuring a single e-h pair, which requires extremely low leakage current. Three Ge detectors with a-Ge contacts are used to study the charge barrier height for blocking electrons and holes. Using the measured bulk leakage current and the D$ddot{o}$hler-Brodsky model, we obtain the values for charge barrier height and the density of localized energy states near the Fermi energy level for the top and bottom contacts, respectively. We predict that the bulk leakage current is extremely small and can be neglected at helium temperature ($sim$4 K). Thus, Ge detectors with a-Ge contacts possess the potential to measure a single e-h pair for detecting LDM particles.

A technique using layered wavelength shifting, scintillating and non-scintillating films is presented to achieve discrimination of surface $alpha$ events from low-energy nuclear recoils in liquid argon detectors. A discrimination power greater than $ 10^{8}$, similar to the discrimination possible for electronic recoils in argon, can be achieved by adding a 50 micron layer of scintillator with a suitably slow decay time, approximately 300 ns or greater, to a wavelength-shifter coated surface. The technique would allow suppression of surface $alpha$ events in a very large next-generation argon dark matter experiment (with hundreds of square meters of surface area) without the requirement for position reconstruction, thus allowing utilization of more of the instrumented mass in the dark matter search. The technique could also be used to suppress surface backgrounds in compact argon detectors of low-energy nuclear recoils, for example in measurements of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering or for sensitive measurements of neutron fluxes.
