We present a method to estimate the lensing potential from massive galaxy clusters for given observational X-ray data. The concepts developed and applied in this work can easily be combined with other techniques to infer the lensing potential, e.g. weak gravitational lensing or galaxy kinematics, to obtain an overall best fit model for the lensing potential. After elaborating on the physical details and assumptions the method is based on, we explain how the numerical algorithm itself is implemented with a Richardson-Lucy algorithm as a central part. Our reconstruction method is tested on simulated galaxy clusters with a spherically symmetric NFW density profile filled with gas in hydrostatic equilibrium. We describe in detail how these simulated observational data sets are created and how they need to be fed into our algorithm. We test the robustness of the algorithm against small parameter changes and estimate the quality of the reconstructed lensing potentials. As it turns out we achieve a very high degree of accuracy in reconstructing the lensing potential. The statistical errors remain below 2.0% whereas the systematical error does not exceed 1.0%.

This paper continues a series in which we intend to show how all observables of galaxy clusters can be combined to recover the two-dimensional, projected gravitational potential of individual clusters. Our goal is to develop a non-parametric algorith m for joint cluster reconstruction taking all cluster observables into account. In this paper, we begin with the relation between the Compton-y parameter and the Newtonian gravitational potential, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium and a polytropic stratification of the intracluster gas. We show how Richardson-Lucy deconvolution can be used to convert the intensity change of the CMB due to the thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect into an estimate for the two-dimensional gravitational potential. Synthetic data simulated with characteristics of the ALMA telescope show that the two-dimensional potential of a cluster with mass 5*10^14 M_sun/h at redshift 0.2 is possible with an error of < 5% between the cluster centre and a radius r < 0.9 Mpc/h.

The relevance of non-thermal cluster studies and the importance of combining observations of future radio surveys with WFXT data are discussed in this paper.
Discovery of strongly-lensed gravitational wave (GW) sources will unveil binary compact objects at higher redshifts and lower intrinsic luminosities than is possible without lensing. Such systems will yield unprecedented constraints on the mass distr ibution in galaxy clusters, measurements of the polarization of GWs, tests of General Relativity, and constraints on the Hubble parameter. Excited by these prospects, and intrigued by the presence of so-called heavy black holes in the early detections by LIGO-Virgo, we commenced a search for strongly-lensed GWs and possible electromagnetic counterparts in the latter stages of the second LIGO observing run (O2). Here, we summarise our calculation of the detection rate of strongly-lensed GWs, describe our review of BBH detections from O1, outline our observing strategy in O2, summarize our follow-up observations of GW170814, and discuss the future prospects of detection.
In this letter, we discuss a new method to probe the redshift evolution of the gas depletion factor, i.e. the ratio by which the gas mass fraction of galaxy clusters is depleted with respect to the universal mean of baryon fraction. The dataset we us e for this purpose consists of 40 gas mass fraction measurements measured at $r_{2500}$ using Chandra X-ray observations, strong gravitational lensing sub-samples obtained from SLOAN Lens ACS + BOSS Emission-line Lens Survey (BELLS) + Strong Legacy Survey SL2S + SLACS. For our analysis, the validity of cosmic distance duality relation is assumed. We find a mildly decreasing trend for the gas depletion factor as a function of redshift at about 2.7$sigma$. This is the first result in literature which does not find a constant gas depletion factor as a function of redshift using gas mass fraction measurements at $r_{2500}$.
Deep radio observations of galaxy clusters have revealed the existence of diffuse radio sources (halos and relics) related to the presence of relativistic electrons and weak magnetic fields in the intracluster volume. I will outline our current knowl edge about the presence and properties of this non-thermal cluster component. Despite the recent progress made in observational and theoretical studies of the non-thermal emission in galaxy clusters, a number of open questions about its origin and its effects on the thermo-dynamical evolution of galaxy clusters need to be answered. I will show the importance of combining galaxy cluster observations by new-generation instruments such as LOFAR and Simbol-X. A deeper knowledge of the non-thermal cluster component, together with statistical studies of radio halos and relics, will allow to test the current cluster formation scenario and to better constrain the physics of large scale structure evolution.
