We aim at characterising dense cores in the clustered environments associated with massive star-forming regions. For this, we present an uniform analysis of VLA NH3(1,1) and (2,2) observations towards a sample of 15 massive star-forming regions, where we identify a total of 73 cores, classify them as protostellar, quiescent starless, or perturbed starless, and derive some physical properties. The average sizes and ammonia column densities are 0.06 pc and 10^15 cm^-2, respectively, with no significant differences between the starless and protostellar cores, while the linewidth and rotational temperature of quiescent starless cores are smaller, 1.0 km/s and 16 K, than those of protostellar (1.8 km/s, 21 K), and perturbed starless (1.4 km/s, 19 K) cores. Such linewidths and temperatures for these quiescent starless cores in the surroundings of massive stars are still significantly larger than the typical values measured in starless cores of low-mass star-forming regions, implying an important non-thermal component. We confirm at high angular resolutions the correlations previously found with single-dish telescopes between the linewidth, the temperature of the cores, and the bolometric luminosity. In addition, we find a correlation between the temperature of each core and the incident flux from the most massive star in the cluster, suggesting that the large temperatures measured in the starless cores of our sample could be due to heating from the nearby massive star. A simple virial equilibrium analysis seems to suggest a scenario of a self-similar, self-graviting, turbulent, virialised hierarchy of structures from clumps (0.1-10 pc) to cores (0.05 pc). A closer inspection of the dynamical state taking into account external pressure effects, reveal that relatively strong magnetic field support may be needed to stabilise the cores, or that they are unstable and thus on the verge of collapse.

Magnetic and energetic properties are presented for 17 dense cores within a few hundred pc of the Sun. Their plane-of-sky field strengths are estimated from the dispersion of polarization directions, following Davis, Chandrasekhar and Fermi (DCF). Th eir ratio of mass to magnetic critical mass is 0.5-3, indicating nearly critical field strengths. The field strength B_pos is correlated with column density N as B_pos~N^p, where p=1.05+-0.08, and with density n as B_pos~n^q, where q=0.66+-0.05. These magnetic properties are consistent with those derived from Zeeman studies (Crutcher et al. 2010), with less scatter. Relations between virial mass M_V, magnetic critical mass M_B, and Alfven amplitude sigma_B/B match the observed range of M/M_B for cores observed to be nearly virial, with M/M_V=0.5-2, with moderate Alfven amplitudes, and with sigma_B/B=0.1-0.4. The B-N and B-n correlations in the DCF and Zeeman samples can be explained when such bound, Alfvenic, and nearly-critical cores have central concentration and spheroidal shape. For these properties, B~N because M/M_B is nearly constant compared to the range of N, and B~n^(2/3) because M^(1/3) is nearly constant compared to the range of n^(2/3). The observed core fields which follow B~n^(2/3) need not be much weaker than gravity, in contrast to core fields which follow B~n^(2/3) due to spherical contraction at constant mass (Mestel 1966). Instead, the nearly critical values of M/M_B suggest that the observed core fields are nearly as strong as possible, among values which allow gravitational contraction.
The article deals with observations of star-forming regions S231-S235 in quasi-thermal lines of ammonia (NH$_3$), cyanoacetylene (HC$_3$N) and maser lines of methanol (CH$_3$OH) and water vapor (H$_2$O). S231-S235 regions is situated in the giant mol ecular cloud G174+2.5. We selected all massive molecular clumps in G174+2.5 using archive CO data. For the each clump we determined mass, size and CO column density. After that we performed observations of these clumps. We report about first detections of NH$_3$ and HC$_3$N lines toward the molecular clumps WB89 673 and WB89 668. This means that high-density gas is present there. Physical parameters of molecular gas in the clumps were estimated using the data on ammonia emission. We found that the gas temperature and the hydrogen number density are in the ranges 16-30 K and 2.8-7.2$times10^3$ cm$^{-3}$, respectively. The shock-tracing line of CH$_3$OH molecule at 36.2 GHz is newly detected toward WB89 673.
We present a multiwavelength study of 28 Galactic massive star-forming H II regions. For 17 of these regions, we present new distance measurements based on Gaia DR2 parallaxes. By fitting a multicomponent dust, blackbody, and power-law continuum mode l to the 3.6 $mu$m through 10 mm spectral energy distributions, we find that ${sim}34$% of Lyman continuum photons emitted by massive stars are absorbed by dust before contributing to the ionization of H II regions, while ${sim}68$% of the stellar bolometric luminosity is absorbed and reprocessed by dust in the H II regions and surrounding photodissociation regions. The most luminous, infrared-bright regions that fully sample the upper stellar initial mass function (ionizing photon rates $N_C ge 10^{50}~{rm s}^{-1}$ and dust-processed $L_{rm TIR}ge 10^{6.8}$ L$_{odot}$) have on average higher percentages of absorbed Lyman continuum photons ($sim$51%) and reprocessed starlight ($sim$82%) compared to less luminous regions. Luminous H II regions show lower average PAH fractions than less luminous regions, implying that the strong radiation fields from early-type massive stars are efficient at destroying PAH molecules. On average, the monochromatic luminosities at 8, 24, and 70 $mu$m combined carry 94% of the dust-reprocessed $L_{rm TIR}$. $L_{70}$ captures ${sim}52$% of $L_{rm TIR}$, and is therefore the preferred choice to infer the bolometric luminosity of dusty star-forming regions. We calibrate SFRs based on $L_{24}$ and $L_{70}$ against the Lyman continuum photon rates of the massive stars in each region. Standard extragalactic calibrations of monochromatic SFRs based on population synthesis models are generally consistent with our values.
(Abridged) Aims. In the present part of our survey we search for ammonia emitters in the Aquila rift complex which trace the densest regions of molecular clouds. Methods. From a CO survey carried out with the Delingha 14-m telescope we selected ~150 targets for observations in other molecular lines. Here we describe the mapping observations in the NH3(1,1) and (2,2) inversion lines of the first 49 sources performed with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope. Results. The NH3(1,1) and (2,2) emission lines are detected in 12 and 7 sources, respectively. Among the newly discovered NH3 sources, our sample includes the following well-known clouds: the starless core L694-2, the Serpens cloud Cluster B, the Serpens dark cloud L572, the filamentary dark cloud L673, the isolated protostellar source B335, and the complex star-forming region Serpens South. Angular sizes between 40 and 80 (~0.04-0.08 pc) are observed for compact starless cores but as large as 9 (~0.5 pc) for filamentary dark clouds. The measured kinetic temperatures of the clouds lie between 9K and 18K. From NH3 excitation temperatures of 3-8K we determine H2 densities with typical values of ~(0.4-4) 10^4 cm^-3. The masses of the mapped cores range between ~0.05 and ~0.5M_solar. The relative ammonia abundance, X= [NH3]/[H2], varies from 10^-7 to 5 10^-7 with the mean <X> = (2.7+/-0.6) 10^-7 (estimated from spatially resolved cores assuming the filling factor eta = 1). In two clouds, we observe kinematically split NH3 profiles separated by ~1 km/s. The splitting is most likely due to bipolar molecular outflows for one of which we determine an acceleration of <~ 0.03 km/s/yr. A starless core with significant rotational energy is found to have a higher kinetic temperature than the other ones which is probably caused by magnetic energy dissipation.
We have conducted a search for ionized gas at 3.6 cm, using the Very Large Array, towards 31 Galactic intermediate- and high-mass clumps detected in previous millimeter continuum observations. In the 10 observed fields, 35 HII regions are identified, of which 20 are newly discovered. Many of the HII regions are multiply peaked indicating the presence of a cluster of massive stars. We find that the ionized gas tends to be associated towards the millimeter clumps; of the 31 millimeter clumps observed, 9 of these appear to be physically related to ionized gas, and a further 6 have ionized gas emission within 1. For clumps with associated ionized gas, the combined mass of the ionizing massive stars is compared to the clump masses to provide an estimate of the instantaneous star formation efficiency. These values range from a few percent to 25%, and have an average of 7 +/- 8%. We also find a correlation between the clump mass and the mass of the ionizing massive stars within it, which is consistent with a power law. This result is comparable to the prediction of star formation by competitive accretion that a power law relationship exists between the mass of the most massive star in a cluster and the total mass of the remaining stars.
