Properties of a single impurity in a one-dimensional Fermi gas are investigated in homogeneous and trapped geometries. In a homogeneous system we use McGuires expression [J. B. McGuire, J. Math. Phys. 6, 432 (1965)] to obtain interaction and kinetic energies, as well as the local pair correlation function. The energy of a trapped system is obtained (i) by generalizing McGuire expression (ii) within local density approximation (iii) using perturbative approach in the case of a weakly interacting impurity and (iv) diffusion Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate that a closed formula based on the exact solution of the homogeneous case provides a precise estimation for the energy of a trapped system for arbitrary coupling constant of the impurity even for a small number of fermions. We analyze energy contributions from kinetic, interaction and potential components, as well as spatial properties such as the system size. Finally, we calculate the frequency of the breathing mode. Our analysis is directly connected and applicable to the recent experiments in microtraps.

We discuss the local density approximation approach to calculating the ground state energy of a one-dimensional Fermi gas containing a single impurity, and compare the results with exact numerical values that we have for up to 11 particles for genera l interaction strengths and up to 30 particles in the strongly interacting case. We also calculate the contact coefficient in the strongly interacting regime. The different theoretical predictions are compared to recent experimental results with few-atom systems. Firstly, we find that the local density approximation suffers from great ambiguity in the few-atom regime, yet it works surprisingly well for some models. Secondly, we find that the strong interaction theories quickly break down when the number of particles increase or the interaction strength decreases.
We present a new theoretical framework for describing an impurity in a trapped Bose system in one spatial dimension. The theory handles any external confinement, arbitrary mass ratios, and a weak interaction may be included between the Bose particles . To demonstrate our technique, we calculate the ground state energy and properties of a sample system with eight bosons and find an excellent agreement with numerically exact results. Our theory can thus provide definite predictions for experiments in cold atomic gases.
Deterministic preparation of an ultracold harmonically trapped one-dimensional Fermi gas consisting of a few fermions has been realized by the Heidelberg group. Using Floquet formalism, we study the time dynamics of two- and three-fermion systems in a harmonic trap under an oscillating magnetic field. The oscillating magnetic field produces a time-dependent interaction strength through a Feshbach resonance. We explore the dependence of these dynamics on the frequency of the oscillating magnetic field for non-interacting, weakly interacting, and strongly interacting systems. We identify the regimes where the system can be described by an effective two-state model and an effective three-state model. We find an unbounded coupling to all excited states at the infinitely strong interaction limit and several simple relations that characterize the dynamics. Based on our findings, we propose a technique for driving transition from the ground state to the excited states using an oscillating magnetic field.
We simulate a balanced attractively interacting two-component Fermi gas in a one-dimensional lattice perturbed with a moving potential well or barrier. Using the time-evolving block decimation method, we study different velocities of the perturbation and distinguish two velocity regimes based on clear differences in the time evolution of particle densities and the pair correlation function. We show that, in the slow regime, the densities deform as particles are either attracted by the potential well or repelled by the barrier, and a wave front of hole or particle excitations propagates at the maximum group velocity. Simultaneously, the initial pair correlations are broken and coherence over different sites is lost. In contrast, in the fast regime, the densities are not considerably deformed and the pair correlations are preserved.
For a decade the fate of a one-dimensional gas of interacting bosons in an external trapping potential remained mysterious. We here show that whenever the underlying integrability of the gas is broken by the presence of the external potential, the in evitable diffusive rearrangements between the quasiparticles, quantified by the diffusion constants of the gas, eventually lead the system to thermalise at late times. We show that the full thermalising dynamics can be described by the generalised hydrodynamics with diffusion and force terms, and we compare these predictions with numerical simulations. Finally, we provide an explanation for the slow thermalisation rates observed in numerical and experimental settings: the hydrodynamics of integrable models is characterised by a continuity of modes, which can have arbitrarily small diffusion coefficients. As a consequence, the approach to thermalisation can display pre-thermal plateau and relaxation dynamics with long polynomial finite-time corrections.
