We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) results of A-site ordered perovskite CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$. We have observed the clear band dispersions, which are shifted to the higher energy by 1.7 eV and show the band narrowing around 2 eV in comparison with the local density approximation calculations. In addition, the high energy multiplet structures of Cu 3$d^8$ final-states have been found around 8 - 13 eV. These results reveal that CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ is a Mott-type insulator caused by the strong correlation effects of the Cu 3$d$ electrons well hybridized with O 2$p$ states. Unexpectedly, there exist a very small spectral weight at the Fermi level in the insulator phase, indicating the existence of isolated metallic states.

We have systematically studied the strong correlation effects in A-site ordered perovskites CaCu3Ti4-xRuxO12 (x = 0, 1, 3.5, 4) by using photoemission and inverse photoemission spectroscopies. In x = 0, 1, 3.5, the peak positions of the strongly corr elated Cu 3d states around -3.8 eV and Ti 3d states around 3.6 eV little change. On the other hand, in x = 4, the Cu 3d states is observed around -2.5 eV. These indicate that Ti plays an important role to retain the strong correlation effects. In addition, the multiplet structures of Cu 3d final states from -8 to -15 eV become weak as Ru increases, indicating the reduction of the localized characters of Cu 3d states. At the Fermi level, we observe the absence of spectral weight in x = 0, 1 and the development of Ru 4d in-gap states between the Cu 3d and Ti 3d peaks in x = 3.5, 4, which give rise to the metal-insulator transition between x = 1 and x = 3.5.
We have investigated the electronic structure of A-site ordered CaCu$_3$Ti$_4$O$_{12}$ as a function of temperature by using angle-integrated and -resolved photoemission spectroscopies. Intrinsic changes of the electronic structure have been successf ully observed in the valence band region by the careful consideration of charging effects. The obtained photoemission results have revealed that the intensity of the nearly non-dispersive Cu 3$d$-O 2$p$ hybridized bands at the binding energy of $sim$2 eV increases with decreasing temperature from 300 to 120 K. This suggests that the density of the localized states, caused by the strong correlation effects, enhances as temperature decreases.

We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission study of the hole-overdoped iron pnictide superconductor KFe2As2, which shows a low Tc of ~4 K. Most of the observed Fermi surfaces show nearly two-dimensional shapes, while a band near the Fermi leve l shows a strong dispersion along the kz direction and forms a small three-dimensional hole pocket centered at the Z point, as predicted by band-structure calculation. However, hole Fermi surfaces of yz and zx orbital character centered at the Gamma point of the two-dimensional Brillouin zone are smaller than those predicted by the calculation while the other hole Fermi surfaces of xy orbital character is much larger. Clover-shaped hole Fermi surfaces around the corner of the 2D BZ are also larger than those predicted by the calculation. These observations are consistent with the de Haas-van Alphen measurement and indicate orbital-dependent electron correlation effects. The effective masses of the energy bands show moderate to strong enhancement, partly due to electron correlation and partly due to energy shifts from the calculated band structure.
We have developed the numerical software package $chinook$, designed for the simulation of photoemission matrix elements. This quantity encodes a depth of information regarding the orbital structure of the underlying wavefunctions from which photoemi ssion occurs. Extraction of this information is often nontrivial, owing to the influence of the experimental geometry and photoelectron interference, precluding straightforward solutions. The $chinook$ code has been designed to simulate and predict the ARPES intensity measured for arbitrary experimental configuration, including photon-energy, polarization and spin-projection, as well as consideration of both surface-projected slab and bulk models. This framework then facilitates an efficient interpretation of the photoemission experiment, allowing for a deeper understanding of the electronic structure in addition to the design of new experiments which leverage the matrix element effects towards the objective of selective photoemission from states of particular interest.
The electronic structure of the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe in the paramagnetic phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft x rays (hn=595-700 eV). Dispersive bands with large contributions from U 5f states w ere observed in the ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure in the paramagnetic phase is partly explained by the band-structure calculation treating all U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that an itinerant description of U 5f states is a good starting point for this compound. On the other hand, there are qualitative disagreements especially in the band structure near the Fermi level (E_B < 0.5 eV). The experimentally observed bands are less dispersive than the calculation, and the shape of the Fermi surface is different from the calculation. The changes in spectral functions due to the ferromagnetic transition were observed in bands near the Fermi level, suggesting that the ferromagnetism in this compound has an itinerant origin.
