In the quasi-2D electron systems of the layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) there is still a controversy about the nature of the transitions to charge-density wave (CDW) phases, i.e. whether they are described by a Peierls-type mechanism or by a lattice-driven model. By performing scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments on the canonical TMD-CDW systems, we have imaged the electronic modulation and the lattice distortion separately in 2H-TaS$_2$, TaSe$_2$, and NbSe$_2$. Across the three materials, we found dominant lattice contributions instead of the electronic modulation expected from Peierls transitions, in contrast to the CDW states that show the hallmark of contrast inversion between filled and empty states. Our results imply that the periodic lattice distortion (PLD) plays a vital role in the formation of CDW phases in the TMDs and illustrate the importance of taking into account the more complicated lattice degree of freedom when studying correlated electron systems.

We report on a Raman scattering investigation of the charge-density-wave (CDW), quasi two-dimensional rare-earth tri-tellurides $R$Te$_3$ ($R$= La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd and Dy) at ambient pressure, and of LaTe$_3$ and CeTe$_3$ under externally applied pressure. The observed phonon peaks can be ascribed to the Raman active modes for both the undistorted as well as the distorted lattice in the CDW state by means of a first principles calculation. The latter also predicts the Kohn anomaly in the phonon dispersion, driving the CDW transition. The integrated intensity of the two most prominent modes scales as a characteristic power of the CDW-gap amplitude upon compressing the lattice, which provides clear evidence for the tight coupling between the CDW condensate and the vibrational modes.
We demonstrate the existence of ferromagnetism in the Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) at conduction-band filling near a quarter. We show that this ferromagnetism is not supported by Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interactions but is instead drive n by the precursors of charge density wave (CDW) formation in the conduction electron band. To study the effect of spatial correlations, we compare Dynamical Mean field Approximation (DMFA) and Dynamical Cluster Approximation (DCA) results. We find that both RKKY and CDW driven ferromagnetism persist as short-range correlations are incorporated into the theory. Both DMFA and DCA show the precursors of CDW formation through the strong enhancement of the d-electron CDW susceptibility as the temperature decreases, up to the ferromagnetic transition temperature. In addition, the DCA captures the signal of a band gap opening due to Peierls instability.
The Holstein Hamiltonian describes fermions hopping on a lattice and interacting locally with dispersionless phonon degrees of freedom. In the low density limit, dressed quasiparticles, polarons and bipolarons, propagate with an effective mass. At hi gher densities, pairs can condense into a low temperature superconducting phase and, at or near commensurate filling on a bipartite lattice, to charge density wave (CDW) order. CDW formation breaks a discrete symmetry and hence occurs via a second order (Ising) transition, and therefore at a finite $T_{rm cdw}$ in two dimensions. Quantum Monte Carlo calculations have determined $T_{rm cdw}$ for a variety of geometries, including square, honeycomb, and Lieb lattices. The superconducting transition, on the other hand, in $d=2$ is in the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) universality class, and is much less well characterized. In this paper we determine $T_{rm sc}$ for the square lattice, for several values of the density $rho$ and phonon frequency $omega_0$. We find that quasi-long range order sets in at $T_{rm sc} lesssim t/20$, where $t$ is the near neighbor hopping amplitude, consistent with previous rough estimates from simulations which only extrapolated to the temperatures we reach from considerably higher $T$. We also show evidence for a discontinuous evolution of the density as the CDW transition is approached at half-filling.
Charge and spin density waves, periodic modulations of the electron and magnetization densities, respectively, are among the most abundant and non-trivial low-temperature ordered phases in condensed matter. The ordering direction is widely believed t o result from the Fermi surface topology. However, several recent studies indicate that this common view needs to be supplemented. Here, we show how an enhanced electron-lattice interaction can contribute to or even determine the selection of the ordering vector in the model charge density wave system ErTe3. Our joint experimental and theoretical study allows us to establish a relation between the selection rules of the electronic light scattering spectra and the enhanced electron-phonon coupling in the vicinity of band degeneracy points. This alternative proposal for charge density wave formation may be of general relevance for driving phase transitions into other broken-symmetry ground states, particularly in multiband systems such as the iron based superconductors.

We study the role of charge density-wave fluctuations on the temperature dependence of Seebeck coefficient in quasi-one dimensional conductors with a Peierls instability. The description of low-dimensional incommensurate charge density-wave fluctuati ons as obtained by a generalized Ginzburg-Landau approach for arrays of weakly coupled chains is embodied in the numerical solution of the semi-classical Boltzmann transport equation. The energy and temperature dependence of the scattering time of electrons on fluctuations can then be extracted and its influence on the Seebeck coefficient calculated. The connexion between theory and experiments carried out on molecular conductors is presented and critically discussed.
