Despite first being detected in the 1970s, surprisingly little is known about the OH main line maser population in the nearby starburst galaxy M82. Sometimes referred to as kilomasers, they have isotropic luminosities intermediate between Galactic masers and those found in more distant megamasers. Several observations have been carried by this group over the last ten years in an attempt to get a better handle on their nature. High velocity resolution VLA observations in 2006 showed that almost all of the maser spots, distributed across the central arcminute of the galaxy, were apparently coincident with background continuum features, and a handful displayed multiple velocity components. The majority of those with velocity structure are located on a blue-shifted arc in the pv-plane, spatially located on an arc northward of the peculiar source known as B41.95+57.5. Now, new results from high spatial and spectral resolution observations with the EVN have resolved several of these masers into multiple spatial components for the first time. The maser emission is compared with known continuum sources in the galaxy, and we conclude that at least some of the maser emission is from high-gain maser action.

The main results from a deep X-ray observation of M82 are summarised: spatially-dependent chemical abundances, temperature structure of the gas, charge-exchange emission lines in the spectrum. We also present an update of the chemical bundances, based on a more refined extraction of spectra.
We report on the discovery of SN2014J in the nearby galaxy M82. Given its proximity, it offers the best opportunity to date to study a thermonuclear supernova over a wide range of the electromagnetic spectrum. The first set of optical, near-IR and mi d-IR observations of SN2014J, orchestrated by the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF), show that SN2014J is a spectroscopically normal Type Ia supernova, albeit exhibiting high-velocity features in its spectrum and heavily reddened by dust in the host galaxy. Our earliest detections start just hours after the fitted time of explosion. We use high-resolution optical spectroscopy to analyze the dense intervening material and do not detect any evolution in the resolved absorption features during the lightcurve rise. Similarly to other highly reddened Type Ia supernovae, a low value of total-to-selective extinction, Rv < 2, provides the best match to our observations. We also study pre-explosion optical and near-IR images from HST with special emphasis on the sources nearest to the SN location.
A study of the distribution of OH gas in the central region of the nearby active starburst galaxy M82 has confirmed two previously known bright masers and revealed several new main line masers. Three of these are seen only at 1665 MHz, one is detecte d only at 1667 MHz, while the rest are detected in both lines. Observations covering both the 1665 and 1667 MHz lines, conducted with both the Very Large Array (VLA) and the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN), have been used to accurately measure the positions and velocities of these features. This has allowed a comparison with catalogued continuum features in the starburst such as HII regions and supernova remnants, as well as known water and satellite line OH masers. Most of the main line masers appear to be associated with known HII regions although the two detected only at 1665 MHz are seen along the same line of sight as known supernova remnants.

We report the results of a sensitive search for 12.2 GHz methanol maser emission towards a sample of eight high-mass star formation regions in the Large Magellanic Clouds which have been detected in other maser transitions. We detected one source tow ards the star formation region N105a. This is the first detection of a 12.2 GHz methanol maser outside our Galaxy. We also made near-contemporaneous observations of the 6.7 GHz methanol and 22 GHz water masers towards these sources, resulting in the detection of water maser emission in six new sources, including one associated with the strongest 6.7 GHz maser in the Magellanic Clouds IRAS 05011-6815. The majority of the maser sources are closely associated with objects identified as likely Young Stellar Objects (YSO) on the basis of Spitzer Space Telescope observations. We find that the YSOs associated with masers tend to be more luminous and have redder infrared colours than the sample as a whole. SED modeling of the YSOs shows that the masers are associated with sources of higher central mass, total luminosity and ambient density than the majority of YSOs in the LMC. This is consistent with the well-established relationship between luminous methanol and water masers and young, high-mass objects observed in the Galaxy.
Large-scale faint structure detected by the recent observations in the halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) provides an attractive window to explore the structure of outer cold dark matter (CDM) halo in M31. Using an N-body simulation of the interactio n between an accreting satellite galaxy and M31, we investigate the mass density profile of the CDM halo. We find the sufficient condition of the outer density profile of CDM halo in M31 to reproduce the Andromeda giant stream and the shells at the east and west sides of M31. The result indicates that the density profile of the outer dark matter halo of M31 is a steeper than the prediction of the theory of the structure formation based on the CDM model.
