Electronic structure calculations combining the local-density approximation with an exact diagonalization of the Anderson impurity model show an intermediate 5f^5-5f^6-valence ground state and delocalization of the 5f^5 multiplet of the Pu atom 5f-shell in PuCoIn_5, PuCoGa_5, and delta-Pu. The 5f-local magnetic moment is compensated by a moment formed in the surrounding cloud of conduction electrons. For PuCoGa_5 and delta-Pu the compensation is complete and the Anderson impurity ground state is a singlet. For PuCoIn_5 the compensation is partial and the Pu ground state is magnetic. We suggest that the unconventional d-wave superconductivity is likely mediated by the 5f-states antiferromagnetic fluctuations in PuCoIn_5, and by valence fluctuations in PuCoGa_5.

Correlation effects are important for making predictions in the delta phase of Pu. Using a realistic treatment of the intra-atomic Coulomb correlations we address the long-standing problem of computing ground state properties. The equilibrium volume is obtained in good agreement with experiment when taking into account Hubbard U of the order 4 eV. For this U, the calculation predicts a 5f5 atomic-like configuration with L=5, S=5/2, and J=5/2 and shows a nearly complete compensation between spin and orbital magnetic moments.
An electronic quantity, the correlation strength, is defined as a necessary step for understanding the properties and trends in strongly correlated electronic materials. As a test case, this is applied to the different phases of elemental Pu. Within the GW approximation we have surprisingly found a universal scaling relationship, where the f-electron bandwidth reduction due to correlation effects is shown to depend only on the local density approximation bandwidth and is otherwise independent of crystal structure and lattice constant.

The {em around-mean-field} LSDA+U correlated band theory is applied to investigate the electronic and magnetic structure of $fcc$-Pu-Am alloys. Despite a lattice expansion caused by the Am atoms, neither tendency to 5$f$ localization nor formation of local magnetic moments on Pu atoms in Pu-Am alloys are found. The $5f$-manifolds in the alloys are calculated being very similar to a simple weighted superposition of elemental Pu and Am $5f$-states.
A combination of Density Functional Theory and the Dynamical Mean Field theory (DMFT) is used to calculate the magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and the temperature dependence of the valence band photoemission spectra. The continuous-time hybri dization expansion quantum Monte-Carlo is utilized to provide the first approximation-free DMFT solution of emph{fcc} $delta$-Pu which includes the full rotationally-invariant exchange interaction. We predict that $delta$-Pu has a Pauli-like magnetic susceptibility near ambient temperature, as in experiment, indicating that electronic coherence causes the absence of local moments. Additionally, We show that volume expansion causes a crossover from incoherent to coherent electronic behavior at increasingly lower temperatures.
Recent findings of new Higgs modes in unconventional superconductors require a classification and characterization of the modes allowed by nontrivial gap symmetry. Here we develop a theory for a tailored nonequilibrium quantum quench to excite all po ssible oscillation symmetries of a superconducting condensate. We show that both a finite momentum transfer and quench symmetry allow for an identification of the resulting Higgs oscillations. These serve as a fingerprint for the ground state gap symmetry. We provide a classification scheme of these oscillations and the quench symmetry based on group theory for the underlying lattice point group. For characterization, analytic calculations as well as full scale numeric simulations of the transient optical response resulting from an excitation by a realistic laser pulse are performed. Our classification of Higgs oscillations allows us to distinguish between different symmetries of the superconducting condensate.
