The stickiness effect suffered by chaotic orbits diffusing in the phase space of a dynamical system is studied in this paper. Previous works have shown that the hyperbolic structures in the phase space play an essential role in causing the stickiness effect. We present in this paper the relationship between the stickiness effect and the geometric property of hyperbolic structures. Using a two-dimensional area-preserving twist mapping as the model, we develop the numerical algorithms for computing the positions of the hyperbolic periodic orbits and for calculating the angle between the stable and unstable manifolds of the hyperbolic periodic orbit. We show how the stickiness effect and the orbital diffusion speed are related to the angle.

One-dimensional Bernoulli mapping with hole is suggested to describe the regularities of the appearance of a chaotic set under the saddle-node scenario of the birth of the Smale--Williams hyperbolic attractor. In such a mapping, a non-trivial chaotic set (with non-zero Hausdorff dimension) arises in the general case as a result of a cascade of period-adding bifurcations characterized by geometric scaling both in the phase space and in the parameter space. Numerical analysis of the behavior of models demonstrating the saddle-node scenario of birth of a hyperbolic chaotic Smale--Williams attractor shows that these regularities are preserved in the case of multidimensional systems. Limits of applicability of the approximate 1D model are discussed.

In this paper, we show that for exact area-preserving twist maps on annulus, the invariant circles with a given rotation number can be destroyed by arbitrarily small Gevrey-$alpha$ perturbations of the integrable generating function in the $C^r$ topology with $r<4-frac{2}{alpha}$, where $alpha>1$.
The constraint structure of 2D-gravity with the Weyl and area-preserving diffeomorphism invariances is analysed in the ADM formulation. It is found that when the area-preserving diffeomorphism constraints are kept, the usual conformal gauge does not exist, whereas there is the possibility to choose the so-called ``quasi-light-cone gauge, in which besides the area-preserving diffeomorphism invariance, the reduced Lagrangian also possesses the SL(2,R) residual symmetry. The string-like approach is applied to quantise this model, but a fictitious non-zero central charge in the Virasoro algebra appears. When a set of gauge-independent SL(2,R) current-like fields is introduced instead of the string-like variables, a consistent quantum theory is obtained.
Image smoothing is a fundamental procedure in applications of both computer vision and graphics. The required smoothing properties can be different or even contradictive among different tasks. Nevertheless, the inherent smoothing nature of one smooth ing operator is usually fixed and thus cannot meet the various requirements of different applications. In this paper, we first introduce the truncated Huber penalty function which shows strong flexibility under different parameter settings. A generalized framework is then proposed with the introduced truncated Huber penalty function. When combined with its strong flexibility, our framework is able to achieve diverse smoothing natures where contradictive smoothing behaviors can even be achieved. It can also yield the smoothing behavior that can seldom be achieved by previous methods, and superior performance is thus achieved in challenging cases. These together enable our framework capable of a range of applications and able to outperform the state-of-the-art approaches in several tasks, such as image detail enhancement, clip-art compression artifacts removal, guided depth map restoration, image texture removal, etc. In addition, an efficient numerical solution is provided and its convergence is theoretically guaranteed even the optimization framework is non-convex and non-smooth. A simple yet effective approach is further proposed to reduce the computational cost of our method while maintaining its performance. The effectiveness and superior performance of our approach are validated through comprehensive experiments in a range of applications. Leaf area index (LAI) is a key biophysical parameter used to determine foliage cover and crop growth in environmental studies. Smartphones are nowadays ubiquitous sensor devices with high computational power, moderate cost, and high-quality sensors. A smartphone app, called PocketLAI, was recently presented and tested for acquiring ground LAI estimates. In this letter, we explore the use of state-of-the-art nonlinear Gaussian process regression (GPR) to derive spatially explicit LAI estimates over rice using ground data from PocketLAI and Landsat 8 imagery. GPR has gained popularity in recent years because of their solid Bayesian foundations that offers not only high accuracy but also confidence intervals for the retrievals. We show the first LAI maps obtained with ground data from a smartphone combined with advanced machine learning. This work compares LAI predictions and confidence intervals of the retrievals obtained with PocketLAI to those obtained with classical instruments, such as digital hemispheric photography (DHP) and LI-COR LAI-2000. This letter shows that all three instruments got comparable result but the PocketLAI is far cheaper. The proposed methodology hence opens a wide range of possible applications at moderate cost.
