Modeling spike firing assumes that spiking statistics are Poisson, but real data violates this assumption. To capture non-Poissonian features, in order to fix the inevitable inherent irregularity, researchers rescale the time axis with tedious computational overhead instead of searching for another distribution. Spikes or action potentials are precisely-timed changes in the ionic transport through synapses adjusting the synaptic weight, successfully modeled and developed as a memristor. Memristance value is multiples of initial resistance. This reminds us with the foundations of quantum mechanics. We try to quantize potential and resistance, as done with energy. After reviewing Planck curve for blackbody radiation, we propose the quantization equations. We introduce and prove a theorem that quantizes the resistance. Then we define the tyke showing its basic characteristics. Finally we give the basic transformations to model spiking and link an energy quantum to a tyke. Investigation shows how this perfectly models the neuron spiking, with over 97% match.

Spiking neural network (SNN), compared with depth neural network (DNN), has faster processing speed, lower energy consumption and more biological interpretability, which is expected to approach Strong AI. Reinforcement learning is similar to learning in biology. It is of great significance to study the combination of SNN and RL. We propose the reinforcement learning method of spike distillation network (SDN) with STBP. This method uses distillation to effectively avoid the weakness of STBP, which can achieve SOTA performance in classification, and can obtain a smaller, faster convergence and lower power consumption SNN reinforcement learning model. Experiments show that our method can converge faster than traditional SNN reinforcement learning and DNN reinforcement learning methods, about 1000 epochs faster, and obtain SNN 200 times smaller than DNN. We also deploy SDN to the PKU nc64c chip, which proves that SDN has lower power consumption than DNN, and the power consumption of SDN is more than 600 times lower than DNN on large-scale devices. SDN provides a new way of SNN reinforcement learning, and can achieve SOTA performance, which proves the possibility of further development of SNN reinforcement learning.
Future mobile devices are anticipated to perceive, understand and react to the world on their own by running multiple correlated deep neural networks on-device. Yet the complexity of these neural networks needs to be trimmed down both within-model an d cross-model to fit in mobile storage and memory. Previous studies focus on squeezing the redundancy within a single neural network. In this work, we aim to reduce the redundancy across multiple models. We propose Multi-Task Zipping (MTZ), a framework to automatically merge correlated, pre-trained deep neural networks for cross-model compression. Central in MTZ is a layer-wise neuron sharing and incoming weight updating scheme that induces a minimal change in the error function. MTZ inherits information from each model and demands light retraining to re-boost the accuracy of individual tasks. Evaluations show that MTZ is able to fully merge the hidden layers of two VGG-16 networks with a 3.18% increase in the test error averaged on ImageNet and CelebA, or share 39.61% parameters between the two networks with <0.5% increase in the test errors for both tasks. The number of iterations to retrain the combined network is at least 17.8 times lower than that of training a single VGG-16 network. Moreover, experiments show that MTZ is also able to effectively merge multiple residual networks.
The activation function plays a fundamental role in the artificial neural network learning process. However, there is no obvious choice or procedure to determine the best activation function, which depends on the problem. This study proposes a new ar tificial neuron, named global-local neuron, with a trainable activation function composed of two components, a global and a local. The global component term used here is relative to a mathematical function to describe a general feature present in all problem domain. The local component is a function that can represent a localized behavior, like a transient or a perturbation. This new neuron can define the importance of each activation function component in the learning phase. Depending on the problem, it results in a purely global, or purely local, or a mixed global and local activation function after the training phase. Here, the trigonometric sine function was employed for the global component and the hyperbolic tangent for the local component. The proposed neuron was tested for problems where the target was a purely global function, or purely local function, or a composition of two global and local functions. Two classes of test problems were investigated, regression problems and differential equations solving. The experimental tests demonstrated the Global-Local Neuron networks superior performance, compared with simple neural networks with sine or hyperbolic tangent activation function, and with a hybrid network that combines these two simple neural networks.
Finding spike-based learning algorithms that can be implemented within the local constraints of neuromorphic systems, while achieving high accuracy, remains a formidable challenge. Equilibrium Propagation is a promising alternative to backpropagation as it only involves local computations, but hardware-oriented studies have so far focused on rate-based networks. In this work, we develop a spiking neural network algorithm called EqSpike, compatible with neuromorphic systems, which learns by Equilibrium Propagation. Through simulations, we obtain a test recognition accuracy of 97.6% on MNIST, similar to rate-based Equilibrium Propagation, and comparing favourably to alternative learning techniques for spiking neural networks. We show that EqSpike implemented in silicon neuromorphic technology could reduce the energy consumption of inference and training respectively by three orders and two orders of magnitude compared to GPUs. Finally, we also show that during learning, EqSpike weight updates exhibit a form of Spike Timing Dependent Plasticity, highlighting a possible connection with biology.

In complex systems, we often observe complex global behavior emerge from a collection of agents interacting with each other in their environment, with each individual agent acting only on locally available information, without knowing the full pictur e. Such systems have inspired development of artificial intelligence algorithms in areas such as swarm optimization and cellular automata. Motivated by the emergence of collective behavior from complex cellular systems, we build systems that feed each sensory input from the environment into distinct, but identical neural networks, each with no fixed relationship with one another. We show that these sensory networks can be trained to integrate information received locally, and through communication via an attention mechanism, can collectively produce a globally coherent policy. Moreover, the system can still perform its task even if the ordering of its inputs is randomly permuted several times during an episode. These permutation invariant systems also display useful robustness and generalization properties that are broadly applicable.
