High spin states of 80Rb are studied via the fusion-evaporation reactions 65Cu+19F, 66Zn+18O and 68Zn+16O with the beam energies of 75 MeV, 76 MeV and 80 MeV, respectively. Twenty-three new states with twenty-eight new gamma transitions were added to the previously proposed level scheme, where the second negative-parity band is significantly pushed up to spins of 22^{-} and 15^{-} and two new sidebands are built on the known first negative-parity band. Two successive band crossings with frequencies 0.51 MeV and 0.61 MeV in the alpha=0 branch as well as another one in the alpha=1 branch of the second negative-parity band are observed for the first time. Backbending is a typical phenomenon in the rotational spectra of superfluid nuclei. It is caused by the rotational alignment of a pair of nucleons and depends on topological properties of the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov spectrum in the rotating frame characterized by diabolic points and Berry phases.
The demonstration of degeneracy of the exciton spin states is an important step towards the production of entangled photons pairs from the biexciton cascade. We measure the fine structure of exciton and biexciton states for a large number of single I nAs quantum dots in a GaAs matrix; the energetic splitting of the horizontally and vertically polarised components of the exciton doublet is shown to decrease as the exciton confinement decreases, crucially passing through zero and changing sign. Thermal annealing is shown to reduce the exciton confinement, thereby increasing the number of dots with splitting close to zero.

We report on the first spectroscopic study of the N=22 nucleus 32Ne at the newly completed RIKEN Radioactive Ion Beam Factory. A single gamma-ray line with an energy of 722(9) keV was observed in both inelastic scattering of a 226 MeV/u 32Ne beam on a Carbon target and proton removal from 33Na at 245 MeV/u. This transition is assigned to the de-excitation of the first J^pi = 2+ state in 32Ne to the 0+ ground state. Interpreted through comparison with state-of-the-art shell model calculations, the low excitation energy demonstrates that the Island of Inversion extends to at least N=22 for the Ne isotopes.
Cross sections for the 90,92,94Zr(p,n) reactions were measured at energies of 79.2 and 119.4 MeV. A phenomenological model was developed to describe the variation with bombarding energy of the position of the L=1 peak observed in these and other (p,n ) reactions. The model yields the splitting between the giant dipole and giant spin dipole resonances. Values of these splittings are obtained for isotopes of Zr and Sn and for 208Pb.
Isospin is an approximate symmetry in atomic nuclei, arising from the rather similar properties of protons and neutrons. Perhaps the clearest manifestation of isospin within nuclei is in the near-identical structure of excited states in mirror nuclei : nuclei with inverted numbers of protons and neutrons. Isospin symmetry, and therefore mirror-symmetry, is broken by electromagnetic interactions and the difference in the masses of the up and down quarks. A recent study by Hoff and collaborators presented evidence that the ground-state spin of $^{73}$Sr is different from that of its mirror, $^{73}$Br, due to an inversion of the ground- and first-excited states, separated by only 27 keV in the $^{73}$Br system. In this brief note, we place this inversion within the necessary context of the past half-century of experimental and theoretical work, and show that it is entirely consistent with normal behaviour, and affords no new insight into isospin-symmetry breaking. The essential point is that isospin-breaking effects due to the Coulomb interaction frequently vary from level to level within a given medium-mass nucleus by as much as 200 keV. Any level splitting smaller than this is liable to manifest a level inversion in the mirror partner which, absent disagreement with an appropriate nuclear model, does not challenge our understanding. While we note the novelty of an inversion in nuclear ground states, we emphasize that in the context of isospin there is nothing specifically illuminating about the ground state, or a level inversion.
