Absolute distance measurement (ADM) over a long range has been studied intensely over the last several decades, due to its important applications in large-scale manufacturing and outer space explorations [1-5]. Traditional absolute distance measurements utilize detection of time-of-flight information, detection of phase shift, or a combination of the two [6-17]. In this paper, we present a novel scheme for high-precision ADM over a long range based on frequency detection by using two optoelectronic oscillators (OEO) to convert distance information to frequency information. By taking advantage of accumulative magnification theory, the absolute error of the measured distance is magnified by about 2*10E5 times, which makes the precision of the measured distance significantly improved. In our experiments, the maximum error is 1.5 um at the emulated ~6 km distance, including the drift error of about 1 um in the air path due to the change in environmental conditions. In addition, the measurable distance using this scheme could be further extended. The highest relative measurement precision is 2*10E10 in our current system while the actual relative measurement precision of our experimental system is limited by the variation of atmospheric conditions and is about 4*10E9.

We have developed a mechanical absolute-rotation sensor capable of resolving ground rotation angle of less than 1 nrad$/sqrt{text{Hz}}$ above $30$ mHz and 0.2 nrad$/sqrt{text{Hz}}$ above $100$ mHz about a single horizontal axis. The device consists o f a meter-scale beam balance, suspended by a pair of flexures, with a resonance frequency of 10.8 mHz. The center of mass is located 3 $mu$m above the pivot, giving an excellent horizontal displacement rejection of better than $3times10^{-5}$ rad/m. The angle of the beam is read out optically using a high-sensitivity autocollimator. We have also built a tiltmeter with better than 1 nrad$/sqrt{text{Hz}}$ sensitivity above 30 mHz. Co-located measurements using the two instruments allowed us to distinguish between background rotation signal at low frequencies and intrinsic instrument noise. The rotation sensor is useful for rotational seismology and for rejecting background rotation signal from seismometers in experiments demanding high levels of seismic isolation, such as Advanced LIGO.

The most common method to measure direct current high voltage (HV) down to the ppm-level is to use resistive high-voltage dividers. Such devices scale the HV into a range where it can be compared with precision digital voltmeters to reference voltage s sources, which can be traced back to Josephson voltage standards. So far the calibration of the scale factors of HV dividers for voltages above 1~kV could only be done at metrology institutes and sometimes involves round-robin tests among several institutions to get reliable results. Here we present a novel absolute calibration method based on the measurement of a differential scale factor, which can be performed with commercial equipment and outside metrology institutes. We demonstrate that reproducible measurements up to 35~kV can be performed with relative uncertainties below $1cdot10^{-6}$. This method is not restricted to metrology institutes and offers the possibility to determine the linearity of high-voltage dividers for a wide range of applications.
We build a resonant fiber optic gyro based on Kagome hollow-core fiber. A semi-bulk cavity architecture based on a 18-m-long Kagome fiber permits to achieve a cavity finesse of 23 with a resonance linewidth of 700 kHz. An optimized Pound-Drever-Hall servo-locking scheme is used to probe the cavity in reflection. Closed-loop operation of the gyroscope permits to reach an angular random walk as small as 0.004$^circ/sqrt{mathrm{h}}$ and a bias stability of 0.45$^circ$/h over 0.5 s of integration time.
The ENUBET facility is a proposed narrow band neutrino beam where lepton production is monitored at single particle level in the instrumented decay tunnel. This facility addresses simultaneously the two most important challenges for the next generati on of cross section experiments: a superior control of the flux and flavor composition at source and a high level of tunability and precision in the selection of the energy of the outcoming neutrinos. We report here the latest results in the development and test of the instrumentation for the decay tunnel. Special emphasis is given to irradiation tests of the photo-sensors performed at INFN-LNL and CERN in 2017 and to the first application of polysiloxane-based scintillators in high energy physics.
A technique for establishing the total neutron rate of a highly-collimated monochromatic cold neutron beam was demonstrated using a method of an alpha-gamma counter. The method involves only the counting of measured rates and is independent of neutro n cross sections, decay chain branching ratios, and neutron beam energy. For the measurement, a target of 10B-enriched boron carbide totally absorbed the neutrons in a monochromatic beam, and the rate of absorbed neutrons was determined by counting 478keV gamma rays from neutron capture on 10B with calibrated high-purity germanium detectors. A second measurement based on Bragg diffraction from a perfect silicon crystal was performed to determine the mean de Broglie wavelength of the beam to a precision of 0.024 %. With these measurements, the detection efficiency of a neutron monitor based on neutron absorption on 6Li was determined to an overall uncertainty of 0.058 %. We discuss the principle of the alpha-gamma method and present details of how the measurement was performed including the systematic effects. We also describe how this method may be used for applications in neutron dosimetry and metrology, fundamental neutron physics, and neutron cross section measurements.
