Using a model based on the rotational modulation of the visibility of active regions, we analyse the high-accuracy CoRoT lightcurve of the active young star CoRoT102899501. Spectroscopic follow-up observations are used to derive its fundamental parameters. We compare its chromospheric activity level with a model of chrosmospheric activity evolution established by combining relationships between the RHK index and the Rossby number with a recent model of stellar rotation evolution on the main sequence. We measure the spot coverage of the stellar surface as a function of time, and find evidence for a tentative increase from 5-14% at the beginning of the observing run to 13-29% 35 days later. A high level of magnetic activity on CoRoT102899501 is corroborated by a strong emission in the Balmer and Ca II HK lines (logRHK ~ -4). The starspots used as tracers of the star rotation constrain the rotation period to 1.625+/-0.002 days and do not show evidence for differential rotation. The effective temperature (Teff=5180+/-80 K), surface gravity (logg=4.35+/-0.1), and metallicity ([M/H]=0.05+/-0.07 dex) indicate that the object is located near the evolutionary track of a 1.09+/-0.12 M_Sun pre-main sequence star at an age of 23+/-10 Myrs. This value is consistent with the gyro-age of about 8-25 Myrs, inferred using a parameterization of the stellar rotation period as a function of colour index and time established for the I-sequence of stars in stellar clusters. We conclude that the high magnetic activity level and fast rotation of CoRoT102899501 are manifestations of its stellar youth consistent with its estimated evolutionary status and with the detection of a strong Li I 6707.8 A absorption line in its spectrum. We argue that a magnetic activity level comparable to that observed on CoRoT102899501 could have been present on the Sun at the time of planet formation.

We present a catalogue of homogeneous determined chromospheric emission (CE), stellar atmospheric parameters and ages for 1,674 FGK main sequence (MS), subgiant, and giant stars. The analysis of CE level and variability is also performed. We measured CE in the CaII lines using more than 180,000 high-resolution spectra from the HARPS spectrograph, as compiled in the AMBRE project, obtained between 2003 and 2019. We converted the fluxes to bolometric and photospheric corrected chromospheric emission ratio, $R_text{HK}$. Stellar atmospheric parameters $T_text{eff}$, $log g$, and [Fe/H] were retrieved from the literature or determined using an homogeneous method. $M_star$, $R_star$, and ages were determined from isochrone fitting. We analysed the CE distribution for the different luminosity classes and spectral types and confirmed the existence of the very inactive stars (VIS) and very active stars (VAS) populations at $log R_text{HK}< -5.1$ and $> -4.2$ dex, respectively. We found indications that the VIS population is composed mainly of subgiant and giant stars and that $log R_text{HK}= -5.1$ dex marks a transition in stellar evolution. There appears to be at least three regimes of variability, for inactive, active and very active stars, with the inactive and active regimes separated by a diagonal Vaughan-Preston gap. We show that stars with low activity levels do not necessarily have low variability. In the case of K dwarfs which show high CE variability, inactive and active stars have similar levels of activity variability. This means that activity levels alone are not enough to infer about the activity variability of a star. We also explained the shape of the VP gap observed in the distribution of CE by using the CE variability-level diagram. In the CE variability-level diagram, the Sun is located in the high variability region of the inactive MS stars zone. (Abridged)

We need to establish a correspondence between the magnetic structures generated by models and usual stellar activity indexes to simulate radial velocity time series for stars less active than the Sun. This is necessary to compare the outputs of such models with observed radial velocity jitters and is critical to better understand the impact of stellar activity on exoplanet detectability. We propose a coherent picture to describe the relationship between magnetic activity, including the quiet Sun regions, and the chromospheric emission using the Sun as a test-bench and a reference. We analyzed a time series of MDI magnetograms jointly with chromospheric emission time series obtained at Sacramento Peak and Kitt Peak observatories. This has allowed us to study the variability in the quiet Sun over the solar cycle, and then, based on available relations between magnetic fields in active structures and chromospheric emission, to propose an empirical reconstruction of the solar chromospheric emission based on all contributions. We show that the magnetic flux covering the solar surface, including in the quieted regions, varies in phase with the solar cycle, suggesting a long-term relationship between the global dynamo and the contribution of all components of solar activity. We have been able to propose a reconstruction of the solar S-index, including a relationship between the weak field component and its chomospheric emission, which is in good agreement with the literature. This allows us to explain that stars with a low average chromospheric emission level exhibit a low variability. We conclude that weak flux regions significantly contribute to the chromospheric emission; these regions should be critical in explaining the lower variability associated with the lower average activity level in other stars as compared to the Sun and estimated from their chromospheric emission.
We present new sub-arcsecond (0.7) Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA) observations of the 1.3 mm continuum emission from circumstellar disks around 11 low and intermediate mass pre-main sequence stars. High resolution ob servations for 3 additional sources were obtained from literature. In all cases the disk emission is spatially resolved. We adopt a self consistent accretion disk model based on the similarity solution for the disk surface density and constrain the dust radial density distribution on spatial scales of about 40 AU. Disk surface densities appear to be correlated with the stellar ages where the characteristic disk radius increases from ~ 20 AU to 100 AU over about 5 Myr. This disk expansion is accompanied by a decrease in the mass accretion rate, suggesting that our sample disks form an evolutionary sequence. Interpreting our results in terms of the temporal evolution of a viscous $alpha$-disk, we estimate (i) that at the beginning of the disk evolution about 60% of the circumstellar material was located inside radii of 25--40 AU, (ii) that disks formed with masses from 0.05 to 0.4 M$_{sun}$ and (iii) that the viscous timescale at the disk initial radius is about 0.1-0.3 Myr. Viscous disk models tightly link the surface density $Sigma(R)$ with the radial profile of the disk viscosity $ u(R) propto R^{gamma}$. We find values of $gamma$ ranging from -0.8 to 0.8, suggesting that the viscosity dependence on the orbital radius can be very different in the observed disks. Adopting the $alpha$ parameterization for the viscosity, we argue that $alpha$ must decrease with the orbital radius and that it may vary between 0.5 and $10^{-4}$. (abridged)

Chromospheric activity has been thought to decay smoothly with time and, hence, to be a viable age indicator. Measurements in solar type stars in open clusters seem to point to a different conclusion: chromospheric activity undergoes a fast transitio n from Hyades level to that of the Sun after about 1 Gyr of main--sequence lifetime and any decaying trend before or after this transition must be much less significant than the short term variations.

The early evolution of Earths atmosphere and the origin of life took place at a time when physical conditions at the Earth where radically different from its present state. The radiative input from the Sun was much enhanced in the high-energy spectra l domain, and in order to model early planetary atmospheres in detail, a knowledge of the solar radiative input is needed. We present an investigation of the atmospheric parameters, state of evolution and high-energy fluxes of the nearby star kap^1 Cet, previously thought to have properties resembling those of the early Sun. Atmospheric parameters were derived from the excitation/ionization equilibrium of Fe I and Fe II, profile fitting of Halpha and the spectral energy distribution. The UV irradiance was derived from FUSE and HST data, and the absolute chromospheric flux from the Halpha line core. From careful spectral analysis and the comparison of different methods we propose for kap^1 Cet the following atmospheric parameters: Teff = 5665+/-30 K (Halpha profile and energy distribution), log g = 4.49+/-0.05 dex (evolutionary and spectroscopic) and [Fe/H] = +0.10+/-0.05 dex (Fe II lines). The UV radiative properties of kap^1 Cet indicate that its flux is some 35% lower than the current Suns between 210 and 300 nm, it matches the Suns at 170 nm and increases to at least 2-7 times higher than the Suns between 110 and 140 nm. The use of several indicators ascribes an age to kap^1 Cet in the interval ~0.4-0.8 Gyr and the analysis of the theoretical HR diagram suggests a mass ~1.04 Msun. This star is thus a very close analog of the Sun when life arose on Earth and Mars is thought to have lost its surface bodies of liquid water. Photochemical models indicate that the enhanced UV emission leads to a significant increase in photodissociation rates compared with those commonly assumed of the early Earth. Our results show that reliable calculations of the chemical composition of early planetary atmospheres need to account for the stronger solar photodissociating UV irradiation.
