We study the quantum entanglement of the spin and orbital degrees of freedom in the one- dimensional Kugel-Khomskii model, which includes both gapless and gapped phases, using analytical techniques and exact diagonalization with up to 16 sites. We compute the entanglement entropy, and the entanglement spectra using a variety of partitions or cuts of the Hilbert space, including two distinct real-space cuts and a momentum-space cut. Our results show the Kugel-Khomski model possesses a number of new features not previously encountered in studies of the entanglement spectra. Notably, we find robust gaps in the entanglement spectra for both gapped and gapless phases with the orbital partition, and show these are not connected to each other. We observe the counting of the low-lying entanglement eigenvalues shows that the virtual edge picture which equates the low-energy Hamiltonian of a virtual edge, here one gapless leg of a two-leg ladder, to the low-energy entanglement Hamiltonian breaks down for this model, even though the equivalence has been shown to hold for similar cut in a large class of closely related models. In addition, we show that a momentum space cut in the gapless phase leads to qualitative differences in the entanglement spectrum when compared with the same cut in the gapless spin-1/2 Heisenberg spin chain. We emphasize the new information content in the entanglement spectra compared to the entanglement entropy, and using quantum entanglement present a refined phase diagram of the model. Using analytical arguments, exploiting various symmetries of the model, and applying arguments of adiabatic continuity from two exactly solvable points of the model, we are also able to prove several results regarding the structure of the low-lying entanglement eigenvalues.

The entanglement entropy distribution of strongly disordered one dimensional spin chains, which are equivalent to spinless fermions at half-filling on a bond (hopping) disordered one-dimensional Anderson model, has been shown to exhibit very distinct features such as peaks at integer multiplications of $ln(2)$, essentially counting the number of singlets traversing the boundary. Here we show that for a canonical Anderson model with box distribution on-site disorder and repulsive nearest-neighbor interactions the entanglement entropy distribution also exhibits interesting features, albeit different than the distribution seen for the bond disordered Anderson model. The canonical Anderson model shows a broad peak at low entanglement values and one narrower peak at $ln(2)$. Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations reveal this structure and the influence of the disorder strength and the interaction strength on its shape. A modified real space renormalization group (RSRG) method was used to get a better understanding of this behavior. As might be expected the peak centered at low values of entanglement entropy has a tendency to shift to lower values as disorder is enhanced. A second peak appears around the entanglement entropy value of $ln(2)$,this peak is broadened and no additional peaks at higher integer multiplications of $ln(2)$ are seen. We attribute the differences in the distribution between the canonical model and the broad hopping disorder to the influence of the on-site disorder which breaks the symmetry across the boundary.

Entanglement and information are powerful lenses to probe phases transitions in many-body systems. Motivated by recent cold atom experiments, which are now able to measure the corresponding information-theoretic quantities, we study the Mott transiti on in the half-filled two-dimensional Hubbard model using cellular dynamical mean-field theory, and focus on two key measures of quantum correlations: entanglement entropy and mutual information. We show that they detect the first-order nature of the transition, the universality class of the endpoint, and the crossover emanating from the endpoint.

The dynamical density-matrix renormalization group technique is used to calculate spin and charge excitation spectra in the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at quarter filling with nearest-neighbor $t$ and next-nearest-neighbor $t$ hopping integral s. We consider a case where $t$ ($>0$) is much smaller than $t$ ($>0$). We find that the spin and charge excitation spectra come from the two nearly independent $t$-chains and are basically the same as those of the 1D Hubbard (and t-J) chain at quarter filling. However, we find that the hopping integral $t$ plays a crucial role in the short-range spin and charge correlations; i.e., the ferromagnetic spin correlations between electrons on the neighboring sites is enhanced and simultaneously the spin-triplet pairing correlations is induced, of which the consequences are clearly seen in the calculated spin and charge excitation spectra at low energies.
The Kondo-Heinsberg chain is an interesting model of a strongly correlated system which has a broad superconducting state with pair-density wave (PDW) order. Some of us have recently proposed that this PDW state is a symmetry-protected topological (S PT) state, and the gapped spin sector of the model supports Majorana zero modes. In this work, we reexamine this problem using a combination of numeric and analytic methods. In extensive density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find no evidence of a topological ground state degeneracy or the previously proposed Majorana zero modes in the PDW phase of this model. This result motivated us to reexamine the original arguments for the existence of the Majorana zero modes. A careful analysis of the effective continuum field theory of the model shows that the Hilbert space of the spin sector of the theory does not contain any single Majorana fermion excitations. This analysis shows that the PDW state of the doped 1D Kondo-Heisenberg model is not an SPT with Majorana zero modes.
We study spin 3/2 fermionic cold atoms with attractive interactions confined in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Using numerical techniques, we determine the phase diagram for a generic density. For the chosen parameters, one-particle excitations a re gapped and the phase diagram is separated into two regions: one where the two-particle excitation gap is zero, and one where it is finite. In the first region, the two-body pairing fluctuations (BCS) compete with the density ones. In the other one, a molecular superfluid (MS) phase, in which bound-states of four particles form, competes with the density fluctuations. The properties of the transition line between these two regions is studied through the behavior of the entanglement entropy. The physical features of the various phases, comprising leading correlations, Friedel oscillations, and excitation spectra, are presented. To make the connection with experiments, the effect of a harmonic trap is taken into account. In particular, we emphasize the conditions under which the appealing MS phase can be realized, and how the phases could be probed by using the density profiles and the associated structure factor. Lastly, the consequences on the flux quantization of the different nature of the pairing in the BCS and MS phases are studied in a situation where the condensate is in a ring geometry.
