We have compared the halo kinematics traced by globular clusters (GCs) and planetary nebulae (PNe) for two elliptical galaxies in the Fornax and Virgo clusters NGC 1399 and NGC 4649, and for the merger remnant NGC 5128 (Centaurus A). We find differences in the rotational properties of the PN, red GC, and blue GC systems in all these three galaxies. NGC 1399 PNe and GCs show line of sight velocity distributions in specific regions that are significantly different, based on Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests. The PN system shows multi-spin components, with nearly opposite direction of rotation in the inner and the outer parts. The GCs velocity field is not point-symmetric in the outer regions of the galaxy, indicating that the system has not reached dynamical equilibrium yet. In NGC 4649 PNe, red and blue GCs have different rotation axes and rotational velocities. Finally, in NGC 5128 both PNe and GCs deviate from equilibrium in the outer regions of the galaxy, and in the inner regions the PN system is rotationally supported, whereas the GC system is dominated by velocity dispersion. The observed different kinematic properties, including deviations from point-symmetry, between PNe and GCs suggest that these systems are accreted at different times by the host galaxy, and the most recent accretion took place only few Gyr ago.We discuss two scenarios which may explain some of these differences: i) tidal stripping of loosely-bound GCs, and ii) multiple accretion of low luminosity and dwarf galaxies. Because these two mechanisms affect mostly the GC system, differences with the PNe kinematics can be expected.

The late assembly of massive galaxies is thought to be dominated by stellar accretion in their outskirts (beyond 2 effective radii Re) due to dry, minor galaxy mergers. We use observations of 1010 passive early-type galaxies (ETGs) within z<0.15 from SDSS IV MaNGA to search for evidence of this accretion. The outputs from the stellar population fitting codes FIREFLY, pPXF, and Prospector are compared to control for systematic errors in stellar metallicity (Z) estimation. We find that the average radial logZ/Zsun profiles of ETGs in various stellar mass (M) bins are not linear. As a result, these profiles are poorly characterized by a single gradient value, explaining why weak trends reported in previous work can be difficult to interpret. Instead, we examine the full radial extent of stellar metallicity profiles and find them to flatten in the outskirts of M>10^{11}Msun ETGs. This is a signature of stellar accretion. Based on a toy model for stellar metallicity profiles, we infer the ex-situ stellar mass fraction in ETGs as a function of M and galactocentric radius. We find that ex-situ stars at 2Re make up 20% of the projected stellar mass of M<10^{10.5}Msun ETGs, rising up to 80% for M>10^{11.5}Msun ETGs.

I have combined the Emsellem et al. ATLAS3D rotation measures of a large sample of early-type galaxies with HST-based classifications of their central structure to characterize the rotation velocities of galaxies with cores. Core galaxies rotate slow ly, while power-law galaxies (galaxies that lack cores) rotate rapidly, confirming the analysis of Faber et al. Significantly, the amplitude of rotation sharply discriminates between the two types in the -19 > Mv > -22 domain over which the two types coexist. The slow rotation in the small set of core galaxies with Mv > -20, in particular, brings them into concordance with the more massive core galaxies. The ATLAS3D fast-rotating and slow-rotating early-type galaxies are essentially the same as power-law and core galaxies, respectively, or the Kormendy & Bender two families of elliptical galaxies based on rotation, isophote shape, and central structure. The ATLAS3D fast rotators do include roughly half of the core galaxies, but their rotation-amplitudes are always at the lower boundary of that subset. Essentially all core galaxies have ATLAS3D rotation-amplitudes lambda_(R_e/2) <= 0.25, while all galaxies with lambda_(R_e/2) > 0.25 and figure eccentricity > 0.2 lack cores. Both figure rotation and the central structure of early-type galaxies should be used together to separate systems that appear to have formed from wet versus dry mergers.

Accretion onto central massive black holes in galaxies is often modelled with the Bondi solution. In this paper we study a generalization of the classical Bondi accretion theory, considering the additional effects of the gravitational potential of th e host galaxy, and of electron scattering in the optically thin limit. We provide a general analysis of the bias in the estimates of the Bondi radius and mass accretion rate, when adopting as fiducial values for the density and temperature at infinity the values of these quantities measured at finite distance from the central black hole. We also give general formulae to compute the correction terms of the critical accretion parameter in relevant asymptotic regimes. A full analytical discussion is presented in the case of an Hernquist galaxy, when the problem reduces to the discussion of a cubic equation, therefore allowing for more than one critical point in the accretion structure. The results are useful for observational works (especially in the case of low-luminosity systems), as well as for numerical simulations, where accretion rates are usually defined in terms of the gas properties near the
We use Chandra observations to estimate the accretion rate of hot gas onto the central supermassive black hole in four giant (of stellar mass 10E11 - 10E12 solar masses) early-type galaxies located in the Virgo cluster. They are characterized by an e xtremely low radio luminosity, in the range L < 3E25 - 10E27 erg/s/Hz. We find that, accordingly, accretion in these objects occurs at an extremely low rate, 0.2 - 3.7 10E-3 solar masses per year, and that they smoothly extend the relation accretion - jet power found for more powerful radio-galaxies. This confirms the dominant role of hot gas and of the galactic coronae in powering radio-loud active galactic nuclei across ~ 4 orders of magnitude in luminosity. A suggestive trend between jet power and location within the cluster also emerges.

Recently, the temperature T and luminosity L_X of the hot gas halos of early type galaxies have been derived with unprecedented accuracy from Chandra data, for 30 galaxies covering a wider range of galactic luminosity (and central velocity dispersion sigma_c) than before. This work investigates the origin of the observed temperatures, by examining the relationship between them and the galaxy structure, the gas heating due to Type Ia supernovae (SNIas) and the gravitational potential, and the dynamical status of the gas flow. In galaxies with sigma_c<200 km/s, the Ts are close to a fiducial average temperature for the gas when in outflow; at 200<sigma_c (km/s)<250, the Ts are generally lower than this, and unrelated with sigma_c, which requires a more complex gas flow status; at larger sigma_c, the Ts may increase as sigma_c^2, as expected for infall heating, though heating from SNIas, independent of sigma_c, should be dominant. All observed Ts are larger than the virial temperature, by up to ~0.5 keV. This additional heating can be provided in the X-ray brightest galaxies by SNIas and infall heating, with a SNIas energy input even lower than in standard assumptions; in the X-ray fainter ones it can be provided by SNIas, whose energy input would be required close to the full standard value at the largest sigma_c. This same energy input, though, would produce temperatures larger than observed at low sigma_c, if entirely thermalized. The values of the observed Ts increase from outflows to inflows; the gas is relatively hotter in outflows, though, if the Ts are rescaled by the virial temperature. For 200<sigma_c(km/s)<250, lower L_X values tend to correspond to lower Ts, which deserves further investigation.
