X-ray reflection off the accretion disc surrounding a black hole, together with the associated broad iron K$alpha$ line, has been widely used to constrain the innermost accretion-flow geometry and black hole spin. Some recent measurements have revealed steep reflection emissivity profiles in a number of active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries. We explore the physically motivated conditions that give rise to the observed steep disc-reflection emissivity profiles. We perform a set of simulations based on the configuration of a possible future high-resolution X-ray mission. Computations are carried out for typical X-ray bright Seyfert-1 galaxies. We find that steep emissivity profiles with $qsim 4-5$ (where the emissivity is $epsilon (r) propto r^{-q}$) are produced considering either i) a lamp-post scenario where a primary compact X-ray source is located close to the black hole, or ii) the radial dependence of the disc ionisation state. We also highlight the role of the reflection angular emissivity: the radial emissivity index $q$ is overestimated when the standard limb-darkening law is used to describe the data. Very steep emissivity profiles with $q geq 7$ are naturally obtained by applying reflection models that take into account radial profile $xi (r)$ of the disc ionisation induced by a compact X-ray source located close to the central black hole.

We use a 380 ks XMM-Newton high-resolution RGS spectrum to look for narrow spectral features from the nuclear environment of 1H0707-495. We do not find any evidence of a line-of-sight ionized wind (warm absorber). We do, however, detect broad emissio n lines, of width ~5000 km s^-1, consistent with O VIII Ly-alpha, N VII Ly-alpha, C VI Ly-alpha and a Fe XIX/Fe XX/Ne IX He-alpha blend. Intriguingly, these lines have both blueshifted and redshifted components, whose velocity shifts are consistent with an origin in an accretion disc at ~1600 R_g from the black hole. The features can be interpreted as the narrow line cores of the disc reflection spectrum, thus providing independent support for the discline interpretation of the X-ray spectrum of 1H0707-495. We discuss the relevance of our findings for the `X-ray broad line region in other Seyferts, and for the origins of the optical broad line region itself.

The dynamical production of low-mass X-ray binaries and brighter cataclysmic variables (CVs) in dense globular clusters is well-established. We investigate how the X-ray emissivity of fainter X-ray binaries (principally CVs and coronally active binar ies) varies between different environments. We compile calculations (largely from the literature) of the X-ray emissivity of old stellar populations, including open and globular clusters and several galaxies. We investigate three literature claims of unusual X-ray sources in low-density stellar populations. We show that a suggested quiescent neutron star in the open cluster NGC 6819 is a foreground M dwarf. We show that the suggested diffuse X-ray emission from an old nova shell in the globular cluster NGC 6366 is actually a background galaxy cluster. And we show that a suggested population of quiescent X-ray binaries in the Sculptor Dwarf Galaxy is mostly (perhaps entirely) background galaxies. We find that above densities of $10^4$ M$_{odot}$/pc$^3$, the X-ray emissivity of globular clusters increases, due to dynamical production of X-ray emitting systems. Below this density, globular clusters have lower X-ray emissivity than the other populations, and we do not see a strong dependence of X-ray emissivity due to density effects. We find significant correlations between X-ray emissivity and binary fraction, metallicity, and density. Sampling these fits via bootstrap techniques gives less significant correlations, but confirms the effect of metallicity on low-density populations, and that of density on the full globular cluster sample.

We review the current status of studies of disc atmospheres and winds in low mass X-ray binaries. We discuss the possible wind launching mechanisms and compare the predictions of the models with the existent observations. We conclude that a combinati on of thermal and radiative pressure (the latter being relevant at high luminosities) can explain the current observations of atmospheres and winds in both neutron star and black hole binaries. Moreover, these winds and atmospheres could contribute significantly to the broad iron emission line observed in these systems.

(Abridged) Narrow Line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxies have low mass black holes and mass accretion rates close to (or exceeding) Eddington, so a standard blackbody accretion disc should peak in the EUV. However, the lack of true absorption opacity in the disc means that the emission is better approximated by a colour temperature corrected blackbody, and this colour temperature correction is large enough ($sim 2.4$) that the bare disc emission from a zero spin black hole can extend into the soft X-ray bandpass. Part of the soft X-ray excess seen in these objects must be intrinsic emission from the disc unless the vertical structure is very different to that predicted. However, the soft excess is much broader than predicted by a bare disc spectrum, indicating some Compton upscattering by cool, optically thick material. We associate this with the disc itself, so it must ultimately be powered by mass accretion. We build an energetically self consistent model assuming that the emission thermalises at large radii, but that at smaller radii the gravitational energy is split between powering optically thick Comptonised disc emission (forming the soft X-ray excess) and an optically thin corona above the disc (forming the tail to higher energies). We show examples of this model fit to the extreme NLS1 REJ1034+396, and to the much lower Eddington fraction Broad Line Seyfert 1 PG1048+231. We use these to guide our fits and interpretations of three template spectra made from co-adding multiple sources to track out a sequence of AGN spectra as a function of $L/L_{Edd}$. The new model is publically available within the {sc xspec} spectral fitting package.

We present XMM-Newton imaging spectroscopy of ten weak emission-line quasars (WLQs) at $0.928leq z leq 3.767$, six of which are radio quiet and four which are radio intermediate. The new X-ray data enabled us to measure the power-law photon index, at rest-frame energies $>2$ keV, in each source with relatively high accuracy. These measurements allowed us to confirm previous reports that WLQs have steeper X-ray spectra, suggesting higher accretion rates with respect to typical quasars. A comparison between the photon indices of our radio-quiet WLQs and those of a control sample of 85 sources shows that the first are significantly higher, at the >~$3sigma$ level. Collectively, the four radio-intermediate WLQs have lower photon indices with respect to the six radio-quiet WLQs, as may be expected if the spectra of the first group are contaminated by X-ray emission from a jet. Therefore, in the absence of significant jet emission along our line of sight, these results are in agreement with the idea that WLQs constitute the extreme high end of the accretion rate distribution in quasars. We detect soft excess emission in our lowest-redshift radio-quiet WLQ, in agreement with previous findings suggesting that the prominence of this feature is associated with a high accretion rate. We have not detected signatures of Compton reflection, Fe K$alpha$ lines, or strong variability between two X-ray epochs in any of our WLQs, which can be attributed to their relatively high luminosity.
