We introduce a semistochastic implementation of the power method to compute, for very large matrices, the dominant eigenvalue and expectation values involving the corresponding eigenvector. The method is semistochastic in that the matrix multiplication is partially implemented numerically exactly and partially with respect to expectation values only. Compared to a fully stochastic method, the semistochastic approach significantly reduces the computational time required to obtain the eigenvalue to a specified statistical uncertainty. This is demonstrated by the application of the semistochastic quantum Monte Carlo method to systems with a sign problem: the fermion Hubbard model and the carbon dimer.

The recently developed density matrix quantum Monte Carlo (DMQMC) algorithm stochastically samples the N -body thermal density matrix and hence provides access to exact properties of many-particle quantum systems at arbitrary temperatures. We demonst rate that moving to the interaction picture provides substantial benefits when applying DMQMC to interacting fermions. In this first study, we focus on a system of much recent interest: the uniform electron gas in the warm dense regime. The basis set incompleteness error at finite temperature is investigated and extrapolated via a simple Monte Carlo sampling procedure. Finally, we provide benchmark calculations for a four-electron system, comparing our results to previous work where possible.
The diagrammatic Monte Carlo (Diag-MC) method is a numerical technique which samples the entire diagrammatic series of the Greens function in quantum many-body systems. In this work, we incorporate the flat histogram principle in the diagrammatic Mon te method and we term the improved version Flat Histogram Diagrammatic Monte Carlo method. We demonstrate the superiority of the method over the standard Diag-MC in extracting the long-imaginary-time behavior of the Greens function, without incorporating any a priori knowledge about this function, by applying the technique to the polaron problem
We extend our recently-developed heat-bath configuration interaction (HCI) algorithm, and our semistochastic algorithm for performing multireference perturbation theory, to the calculation of excited-state wavefunctions and energies. We employ time-r eversal symmetry, which reduces the memory requirements by more than a factor of two. An extrapolation technique is introduced to reliably extrapolate HCI energies to the Full CI limit. The resulting algorithm is used to compute the twelve lowest-lying potential energy surfaces of the carbon dimer using the cc-pV5Z basis set, with an estimated error in energy of 30-50 {mu}Ha compared to Full CI. The excitation energies obtained using our algorithm have a mean absolute deviation of 0.02 eV compared to experimental values. We also calculate the complete active-space (CAS) energies of the S0, S1, and T0 states of tetracene, which are of relevance to singlet fission, by fully correlating active spaces as large as 18 electrons in 36 orbitals.

We use the diffusion quantum Monte Carlo to revisit the enthalpy-pressure phase diagram of the various products from the different proposed decompositions of H$_2$S at pressures above 150~GPa. Our results entails a revision of the ground-state enthal py-pressure phase diagram. Specifically, we find that the C2/c HS$_2$ structure is persistent up to 440~GPa before undergoing a phase transition into the C2/m phase. Contrary to density functional theory, our calculations suggest that the C2/m phase of HS is more stable than the I4$_1$/amd HS structure over the whole pressure range from 150 to 400 GPa. Moreover, we predict that the Im-3m phase is the most likely candidate for H$_3$S, which is consistent with recent experimental x-ray diffraction measurements.
We present an extension of constrained-path auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (CP-AFQMC) for the treatment of correlated electronic systems coupled to phonons. The algorithm follows the standard CP-AFQMC approach for description of the electronic d egrees of freedom while phonons are described in first quantization and propagated via a diffusion Monte Carlo approach. Our method is tested on the one- and two-dimensional Holstein and Hubbard-Holstein models. With a simple semiclassical trial wavefunction, our approach is remarkably accurate for $omega/(2text{d}tlambda) < 1$ for all parameters in the Holstein model considered in this study. In addition, we empirically show that the autocorrelation time scales as $1/omega$ for $omega/t lesssim 1$, which is an improvement over the $1/omega^2$ scaling of the conventional determinant quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. In the Hubbard-Holstein model, the accuracy of our algorithm is found to be consistent with that of standard CP-AFQMC for the Hubbard model when the Hubbard $U$ term dominates the physics of the model, and is nearly exact when the ground state is dominated by the electron-phonon coupling scale $lambda$. The approach developed in this work should be valuable for understanding the complex physics arising from the interplay between electrons and phonons in both model lattice problems and ab-initio systems.
