We present magnetization and magnetostriction studies of the insulating perovskite LaCoO3 in magnetic fields approaching 100 T. In marked contrast with expectations from single-ion models, the data reveal two distinct first-order spin transitions and well-defined magnetization plateaux. The magnetization at the higher plateau is only about half the saturation value expected for spin-1 Co3+ ions. These findings strongly suggest collective behavior induced by strong interactions between different electronic -- and therefore spin -- configurations of Co3+ ions. We propose a model of these interactions that predicts crystalline spin textures and a cascade of four magnetic phase transitions at high fields, of which the first two account for the experimental data.

Frustrated magnets can exhibit many novel forms of order when exposed to high magnetic fields, however, much less is known about materials where frustration occurs in the presence of itinerant electrons. Here we report thermodynamic and transport mea surements on micron-sized single crystals of the triangular-lattice metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2, in magnetic fields of up to 90 T and temperatures down to 0.35 K. We observe a cascade of magnetic phase transitions at 13.5 20, 28 and 39T in fields applied along the easy axis, and we combine magnetic torque, specific heat and transport data to construct the field-temperature phase diagram. The results are discussed in the context of a frustrated easy-axis Heisenberg model for the localized moments where intermediate applied magnetic fields are predicted to stabilize a magnetic supersolid phase. Deviations in the measured phase diagram from this model predictions are attributed to the role played by the itinerant electrons.
Motivated by recent observation of magnetic field induced transition in LaCoO3 we study the effect of external field in systems close to instabilities towards spin-state ordering and exciton condensation. We show that, while in both cases the transit ion can be induced by an external field, temperature dependencies of the critical field have opposite slopes. Based on this result we argue that the experimental observations select the exciton condensation scenario. We show that such condensation is possible due to high mobility of the intermediate spin excitations. The estimated width of the corresponding dispersion is large enough to overrule the order of atomic multiplets and to make the intermediate spin excitation propagating with a specific wave vector the lowest excitation of the system.
The quadruple Calcium manganite (CaMn7O12) is a multiferroic material that exhibits a giant magnetically-induced ferroelectric polarization which makes it very interesting for magnetoelectric applications. Here, we report the Raman spectroscopy study on this compound of both the phonon modes and the low energy excitations from 4 K to room temperature. A detailed study of the Raman active phonon excitations shows that three phonon modes evidence a spin-phonon coupling at TN2 = 50 K. In particular, we show that the mode at 432 cm-1 associated to Mn(B)O6 (B position of the perovskite) rotations around the [111] cubic diagonal is impacted by the magnetic transition at 50 K and its coupling to the new modulation of the Mn spin in the (a,b) plane. At low energies, two large low energy excitations are observed at 25 and 47 cm-1. The first one disappears at 50 K and the second one at 90 K. We have associated these excitations to electro-magneto-active modes.
Two-dimensional triangular-lattice materials with spin-1/2 are perfect platforms for investigating quantum frustrated physics with spin fluctuations. Here we report the structure, magnetization, heat capacity and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) re sults on cesium ytterbium diselenide, CsYbSe$_2$. There is no long-range magnetic order down to 0.4 K at zero field. The temperature dependent magnetization, $M(T)$, reveals an easy-plane magnetic anisotropy. A maximum is found in $M(T)$ around emph{T}$sim$1.5 K when magnetic field $H$ is applied in the $ab$ plane, indicating the short-range interaction. The low-temperature isothermal magnetization $M(H)$ shows a one-third plateau of the estimated saturation moment, that is characteristic of a two-dimensional frustrated triangular lattice. Heat capacity shows field-induced long-range magnetic order for both $H||c$ and $H||ab$ directions. The broad peak in heat capacity and highly damped INS magnetic excitation at $T$=2 K suggests strong spin fluctuations. The dispersive in-plane INS, centered at the (1/3 1/3 0) point, and the absence of dispersion along $c$ direction suggests 120$^{circ}$ non-collinear 2D-like spin correlations. All these results indicate that the two-dimensional frustrated material CsYbSe$_2$ can be in proximity to the triangular-lattice quantum spin liquid. We propose an experimental low-temperature $H$-$T$ phase diagram for CsYbSe$_2$.
Thermodynamic properties, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements, and density-functional band-structure calculations for $varepsilon$-LiVOPO$_4$ are reported. This quantum magnet features a singlet ground state and comprises two types of alternating spin-$frac12$ chains that manifest themselves by the double maxima in the susceptibility and magnetic specific heat, and by the two-step magnetization process with an intermediate $frac12$-plateau. From thermodynamic data and band-structure calculations, we estimate the leading couplings of $J_1simeq 20$ K and $J_2simeq 60$ K and the alternation ratios of $alpha_1=J_1/J_1simeq 0.6$ and $alpha_2=J_2/J_2simeq 0.3$ within the two chains, respectively. The zero-field spin gap $Delta_0/k_{rm B}simeq 7.3$ K probed by thermodynamic and NMR measurements is caused by the $J_1$-$J_1$ spin chains and can be closed in the applied field of $mu_{0}H_{rm c1}simeq 5.6$ T, giving rise to a field-induced long-range order. The NMR data reveal predominant three-dimensional spin-spin correlations at low temperatures. Field-induced magnetic ordering transition observed above $H_{c1}$ is attributed to the Bose-Einstein condensation of triplons in the sublattice formed by the $J_1$-$J_1$ chains with weaker exchange couplings.
