A significant fraction of massive stars in the Milky Way and other galaxies are located far from star clusters. It is known that some of these stars are runaways and therefore most likely were formed in embedded clusters and then ejected into the field because of dynamical few-body interactions or binary-supernova explosions. However, there exists a group of field O stars whose runaway status is difficult to prove via direct proper motion measurements or whose low space velocities and/or young ages appear to be incompatible with their large separation from known star clusters. The existence of this group led some authors to believe that field O stars can form in situ. In this paper, we examine the runaway status of the best candidates for isolated formation of massive stars in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds by searching for bow shocks around them, by using the new reduction of the Hipparcos data, and by searching for stellar systems from which they could originate within their lifetimes. We show that most of the known O stars thought to have formed in isolation are instead very likely runaways. We show also that the field must contain a population of O stars whose low space velocities and/or young ages are in apparent contradiction with the large separation of these stars from their parent clusters and/or the ages of these clusters. These stars (the descendants of runaway massive binaries) cannot be traced back to their parent clusters and therefore can be mistakenly considered as having formed in situ. We argue also that some field O stars could be detected in optical wavelengths only because they are runaways, while their cousins residing in the deeply embedded parent clusters might still remain totally obscured. The main conclusion of our study is that there is no significant evidence whatsoever in support of the in situ proposal on the origin of massive stars.

This paper presents an extensive overview of known and proposed RR Lyrae stars in binaries. The aim is to revise and extend the list with new Galactic field systems. We utilized maxima timings for eleven RRab type stars with suspicious behaviour from the GEOS database, and determined maxima timings from data of sky surveys and our own observations. This significantly extended the number of suitable maxima timings. We modelled the proposed Light Time Effect (LiTE) in O-C diagrams to determine orbital parameters for these systems. In contrast to recent studies, our analysis focused on decades-long periods instead of periods in the order of years. Secondary components were found to be predominantly low-mass objects. However, for RZ Cet and AT Ser the mass of the suspected companion of more than one solar mass suggests that it is a massive white dwarf, a neutron star or even a black hole. We found that the semi-major axes of the proposed orbits are between 1 and 20 au. Because the studied stars belong to the closest RR Lyraes, maximal angular distances between components during orbit should at least be between 1 and 13 mas and this improves the chance to detect both stars using current telescopes. However, our interpretation of the O-C diagrams as a consequence of the LiTE should be considered as preliminary without reliable spectroscopic measurements. On the other hand our models give a prediction of the period and radial velocity evolution which should be sufficient for plausible proof of binarity.
This is the third paper in a series aiming at the analysis of nitrogen abundances in O-type stars, to enable further constraints on the early evolution of massive stars. We provide first theoretical predictions for the NIV4058/NIII4640 emission line ratio in dependence of various parameters, and confront them with results from the analysis of a sample of early LMC/SMC O-stars. Stellar and wind parameters are determined by line profile fitting of H/He/N lines, exploiting the helium and nitrogen ionization balance. Corresponding synthetic spectra are calculated using the NLTE atmospheric code FASTWIND. Though there is a monotonic relationship between the emission line ratio and Teff, all other parameters being equal, theoretical predictions indicate additional dependencies, most notably, on the nitrogen abundance. These basic predictions are confirmed by results from atmospheric code CMFGEN. The effective temperatures for the earliest O-stars, inferred from the nitrogen ionization balance, are partly considerably hotter than indicated by previous studies. Consistent with earlier results, effective temperatures increase from supergiants to dwarfs for all spectral types in the LMC. The relation between observed NIV4058/NIII4640 emission line ratio and Teff, for a given luminosity class, turned out to be quite monotonic for our sample stars, and fairly consistent with our model predictions. The scatter within a spectral sub-type is mainly produced by abundance effects. Our findings suggest that the Walborn et al. (2002) classification scheme is able to provide a meaningful relation between spectral type and Teff, provided that it is possible to discriminate for the luminosity class. This might be difficult to achieve in low-Z environments such as the SMC, owing to rather low wind-strengths. According to our predictions, the major bias of the classification scheme is due to nitrogen content.
We present deep VLT and HST observations of the nearest examples of calcium-rich gap transients -- rapidly evolving transient events, with a luminosity intermediate between novae and supernovae. These sources are frequently found at large galactocent ric offsets, and their progenitors remain mysterious. Our observations find no convincing underlying quiescent sources coincident with the locations of these transients, allowing us to rule out a number of potential progenitor systems. The presence of surviving massive-star binary companions (or other cluster members) are ruled out, providing an independent rejection of a massive star origin for these events. Dwarf satellite galaxies are disfavoured unless one invokes as yet unknown conditions that would be extremely favourable for their production in the lowest mass systems. Our limits also probe the majority of the globular cluster luminosity function, ruling out the presence of an underlying globular cluster population at high significance, and thus the possibility that they are created via dynamical interactions in dense globular cluster cores. Given the lack of underlying systems, previous progenitor suggestions have difficulty reproducing the remote locations of these transients, even when considering solely halo-borne progenitors. Our preferred scenario is that calcium-rich transients are high velocity, kicked systems, exploding at large distances from their natal site. Coupled with a long-lived progenitor system post-kick, this naturally explains the lack of association these transients have with their host stellar light, and the extreme host-offsets exhibited. Neutron star -- white dwarf mergers may be a promising progenitor system in this scenario.
To investigate statistically whether magnetic fields in massive stars are ubiquitous or appear in stars with specific spectral classification, certain ages, or in a special environment, we acquired 41 new spectropolarimetric observations for 36 stars . Among the observed sample roughly half of the stars are probable members of clusters at different ages, whereas the remaining stars are field stars not known to belong to any cluster or association. Spectropolarimetric observations were obtained during three different nights using the low-resolution spectropolarimetric mode of FORS2 (FOcal Reducer low dispersion Spectrograph) mounted on the 8-m Antu telescope of the VLT. To assess the membership in open clusters and associations, we used astrometric catalogues with the best currently available kinematic and photometric data. A field at a significance level of 3sigma was detected in ten O-type stars. Importantly, the largest longitudinal magnetic fields were measured in two Of?p stars: <B_z>=-381+-122G for CPD-282561 and <B_z>=-297+-62G for HD148937, previously detected by us as magnetic. The obtained observations of HD148937 on three different nights indicate that the magnetic field is slightly variable. Our new measurements support our previous conclusion that large-scale organized magnetic fields with polar field strengths in excess of 1kG are not widespread among O-type stars. Among the stars with a detected magnetic field, only one star, HD156154, belongs to an open cluster at high membership probability. According to previous kinematic studies, four magnetic O-type stars in the sample are well-known candidate runaway stars.
The origin of the arc-shaped Sh2-296 nebula is still unclear. Mainly due to its morphology, the nebula has been suggested to be a 0.5 Myr-old supernova remnant (SNR) that could be inducing star formation in the CMa OB1 association. We aim to show, fo r the first time, that the nebula is part of a large, shell-like structure, which we have designated the ``CMa shell, enclosing a bubble created by successive supernova (SN) explosions. We identified three runaway stars, associated with bow-shock structures, in the direction of the CMa shell and we investigate the possibility that they have originated in the center of the shell. By analyzing images of the CMa OB1 association at several wavelengths, we clearly see that the Sh2-296 nebula is in fact part of a large structure, which can be approximated by a large (with a diameter of ~60 pc) elliptical shell. Using the recent Gaia-DR2 astrometric data, we trace back the path of the three runaway stars, in order to find their original position in the past, with relation to the CMa shell. We also revise the heating and ionization of the Sh2-296 nebula, by comparing the photon budget provided by the O stars in the region with results from radio observations. We find that the runaway stars have likely been ejected from a Trapezium-like progenitor cluster on three successive SN explosions having taken place ~6, ~2 and ~1 Myr ago. We also show that the few late-type O stars in the region cannot explain the ionization of the Sh~2-296 nebula and other mechanisms need to be at work. We argue that, though we now have evidence for several SNe events in the CMa OB1 association, the SNe probably played a minor role in triggering star formation in these clouds. In contrast, the CMa OB1 association, as it is now, likely testifies to the last stages of a star-forming region.
